I'm a beginner/intermediate player, and my coach has asked me to actively engage my wrist briefly for forehand topspin, by slightly brushing over the ball right upon contact.

Correct use of wrist can take the backhand to a whole new level in a way it just doesn’t do on the forehand. I was told to curl the wrist back for the backhand loop and snap out all the way in contact. Ultimately, timing is everything, and when I get it right, it’s a devastating and superb shot. The important caveat is that, simply, you will not always have the time to make full use of the wrist depending on speed of the rally and your positioning. It should be a tool in your armour which the more you practice the better it will get

Most important video to level up. There is so much energy with a whipping motion...Thats why a whip makes a sound. Most important: It is only at the end of an explosive motion, can't have it at the end of a long safe swing. That's why it is way easier with backhand...short explosive motion...let the wrist snap! It can only be achieved when everything is relaxed...like you grab the racket firmly at the very end of the stroke...

Very good video and as I said, I am trying to use as small and efficient stroke as I can. Maybe I use my wrist a bit on the forehand, but I am really trying to concentrate on brushing the ball and letting the rubber do the work. Backhand is more wrist, but same thing- trying to feel the rubber dwell a bit on the rubber and sling foreward with as small a stroke as possible.

Yes, that’s very good. Although on backhand you can rely more on your arm and wrist, I recommend people to still learn how to use the body on the forehand side just because it’s more efficient and consistent.

@@roadtopro3038 I agree. However, you won't be able to loop against decent backspin if you're not using the wrist as a whip, so even for the intermediate or beginners stage, it's still essential for looping against backspin (although looping against bs might be intermediate and up only I suppose)

Don't lock your wrist, but make sure it doesn't excessively extend then flex into contact either. Except when you fade your FH loop, don't contact with a laid back or extended wrist, like in the tennis FH. Some players add more spin to their shots by using radial deviation of the wrist, first ulnar deviating naturally from inertia, then radial deviating into contact.

Sometimes I think people change wristpower with fingerpower ( I come from badmionton, just got here by youtube recomendations..so maybe my comment here is useless, but in baminton it s fundamental that u dont use your wrist but your fingers by time of impact, the acceleration comes from shoulder/elbow rotation and so on...)

I started table tennis at age 7 and I train for about 8 years and I'm not sure why but I'm on a high level where u need topspin but ive managed to always do topspin without any spin its really a big frustration do u maybe have any typs ?is it maybe cause I touch the ball wrong?
@roadtopro3038

Thanks for the questions. First, let me ask you if I understand tour question right. So you are trying to give topspin but it doesn’t have much topspin, so does it seem like a smash rather than a loop when you do topspin stroke?

If you are not using wrist in the first stage you will not be able to use it properly after that.
