Hello Tony, Great video and great advice. I am visiting Lisbon on 10/27 and have the afternoon off. Is it worth the trip to go to Sintra after 12pm. Do you think I have enough time to visit Pena Palace and Castle of the Moors? Can I use Lisbon Card for the train from Lisbon to Sintra? Sorry for so many questions. Thank you so much.

THANK YOU very much for this wonderful video of Sintra!! Question... Is it 1 hour on each attraction (Pena Pl, Moorish Cstl, and the Quinta) enough? I know that it depends on how much time I want to spend on each, but I'm doing a day trip and I don't want to miss any part of the attraction because I spend too much time in one of them. How long did you stay on each attraction? Thanks again
@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal9 ай бұрын
@@PYJacob hi, one hour is absolutely not enough. It's more like two hours, even more in the case of the castle where you have to walk a lot. The Quinta da Regaleira is quite extense, too.

We recently visited Sintra using your tips and managed to skip the Scotturb buses. We went uphill and downhill using Bolt(or was it Uber) from the centre. It was rather cheap at 1.9euro due to promo 😂. Bought the ticket to Pena palace only when we arrived there, as we were early and due to December cold weather , there was no queue. Later we strolled in Sintra town centre.Thank you for the tips! The stroll upward from entrance of Pena Palace is not recommended for those with weak knees, leg problems. Definitely need to use comfortable shoes! Thank you again for the great tips. Lots of love from Malaysia!

Nice video. My wife and I visited Sintra in this past April and the place was jammed with tourists. We stayed at a hotel for two nights and if you are going to visit Sintra in anything but the dead of winter, I recommend spending a couple of nights there. We stayed at the Sintra Nova Hotel and loved it. There are city buses that run up to the Pena Palace, but we took an Uber up there for about 7 Euros. The lines are long, but, the views are really worth it. As the video points out you can then walk down to the Moorish Castle, which is very impressive. After we toured the Moorish Castle, we walked down to the center of town and it's all downhill. Don't try to walk up to the Pena Palace or the Moorish Castle unless you are in pretty good shape and have some very good footwear on. Since we had extra time, we visited The Sintra National Palace downtown, and if you have the time I highly recommend it. We also went to the Quinta da Regaleira and that too is really worth visiting. Again, if you are anywhere near the high season the place will be mobbed.

Thanks, Nils, it sounds as you might have visited Sintra during the Easter period (but then, we might be wrong). You are right, I think right now most tourist cities in the planet are experiencing a visitor overload. We talk in the video about the city buses, a huge scam.

If you’re reasonably fit, walking from the station to the Palace and/or moorish castle is very doable. The single file traffic queue is so slow, walking up is almost as quick and more satisfying.

When we were in Sintra in 2019, we walked from the train up to Quinta da Regaleira. We had been talking about possibly moving from the U.S. to either Spain or Portugal. On our walk up to Quinta, we passed a dilapidated but beautiful old Moorish mansion. We wondered how much we could get it for and invest into renovation. We decided to discuss it when we returned back to the U.S. About a week later, it was all over the news that Madonna had purchased a home in Sintra and wouldn't you know, it was the exact home we had been looking at. When we found out what she paid for it, we were grateful that someone had the "MILLIONS" necessary to renovate it. But from what I hear, she lives in the guest house and nothing has been done to the main house to date. Oh well. If you look at a screen shot of your video at 15:16, you can see the back side of her home on the lower left hand corner.

Thanks for the advises, we took good use of them! I haven't found hard to walk between the main spots. Metro station - Quinta De Reguilera was about 30 min. Then from there to the Moorish Castle was about an hour (with a 65 years old, not very fit lady) and I would never switch that experience with going up by car. The hiking trail is very unique. Scammer tuk-tuk drivers are trying to scare you that it take 2 hours to go up, but if you are fit, you can do it in 30 mins. Pena Castle is quite close to the Moorish Castle but we finally skipped that one, had a nice view on it from the top and didn't wanted to go inside neither. We arrived lasy around 10:30 to Sintra and left at 17:00 so there is still enough time to visit everything if you come earlier.

Thanks for sharing valuable information on the hiking trails. It's all about time. You can walk but that will force you skip places. In our opinion, the Palacio de Pena is one of the must-see visits in Sintra. But if you are going to spend the night in Sintra, by all means, enjoy the trails!

Thank you once again! Ive been wrapping my head around Sintra and understood most of it but your videos showing exactly what it looks like at train station and what to buy helps. And yes I read about the bus so we are going to decide on tuck tuck or Uber. We are going next winter first week of March and concerned about Pena Palace timing. I went back and forth on Pena Palace first or Quinta de Regaleria. Mainly because we want to see the same 3 sites in your video but also not sure if we need to book tickets in advance during first week of March. What are your thoughts? Do we book Pena Palace timeslot? Do we go after lunch + Moorish Castle?
@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Жыл бұрын
Hello, there is quite a lot of ground to cover in the Palacio and the Moorish Castle, that's why we decided to get it over with in the morning. But the afternoon sounds fine too, you would have to double check closing times. There are so many tourists around these days, everywhere, that we no longer feel confident recommending arriving without a ticket for the most popular attractions. All the best.
@TagusMan6 ай бұрын
Palacio da Pena is well worth the trip to see and explore on the outside. But on the inside, if you've seen one palace, you've seen them all. No need to wait in line to see the interior. Then, walk down from Palacio da Pena. Lovely trek through mystical gardens and forest. If it's foggy, even better. Gives Sintra a creepy, fairy tale like atmosphere. If you've been to Castelo São Jorge in Lisbon, maybe skip the Castelo dos Mouros in Sintra. More of the same. Go straight to Quinta da Regaleira. Brilliant place. That leaves you more time to check out one of the lesser touristy palaces like Montserrate and Queluz.

I like this video as these are the 3 pplaces on my list for SINTRA. Your video helps me plan according to where their location is. According to your video it would make sense to do PENA first and then MOORISH. Break to centre then over to QUINTA. Question: From MOORISH to Centre for lunch can you easily walk or have to take bus/tuk tuk? Then from centre is it a flat walk to QUINTA? and how long is walk if we have lunch in the centre? Faye @@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal
@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Жыл бұрын
@@fayegee9894 From the entrance of Pena Palace to the entrance of the Moorish Castle is a fifteen minute walk, maximum. The walk from Moorish to the centre will take quite a lot of time and it's very steep going down. Take a Bolt/Uber. The walk from the centre to the Quinta is flat. Fifteen minutes maximum.

Hi tony! I just want to ask if train going to Sintra is included in Lisboa card? Btw, your videos helped us alot during our trip last month in Barcelona and now we will be visiting Portugal. Thank you so much for the very informative videos.
@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal2 ай бұрын
Hello, the train is included. But using the Lisboa Card to go to Sintra is not a very good use of the card, the return you will get on your investment will be reduced. Better use it in the way we explain on this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3Kyn5-OmpacgdU

This is such a helpful video to plan our upcoming trip. When you said you were there in winter, which month was that? Our trip will be in mid November and we want to be prepared for the weather.

We've been to Sintra several times. Last time it was February. You need to check the weather forecast a few days before your trip to be able to tell what is going to be like for sure.

Wayne, the Viva Viagem card has been replaced by the Navegante card. They work in exactly the same way.

Any idea of what crowds we might see in Sintra at the end of March on a week day.

Excellent video! Everything that I would need for Sintra! Thank you for sharing! I have a quick question, when is it considered "low season" in Lisbon? Is it very busy mid-March?
@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal5 ай бұрын
Thank you! The notion of low season has drastically changed after the pandemic, it's greatly a thing of the past. But March should be quieter than the high season months.

Hi Tony, we are a group of 12, do you recommend us to go Sintra on our own or join a local tour? Do you have any recommendations, thank you so much.
@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Жыл бұрын
We haven't got any experience of leading groups, but are aware of the challenges involved. If you could find a local operator offering the trip for you, it might be a good idea. Otherwise, you can always try it on your own following our advice. Transport in Sintra will be the biggest challenge.

Thank you for usufull information. Is it possible to buy ticket at lisbon airport as lisbon card + pena palas ? second question is it ok just one day round trip?
@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal2 ай бұрын
We explain here how to get the Lisbon Card, which is not a good investment for Sintra kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3Kyn5-OmpacgdU Buy your Pena Palace ticket online. A day trip will be enough to see the basics of Sintra, but if you spend the night, you will be able to see more things at leisure.

I wish I had seen this prior to visiting Sinatra. We were victims of the bus scam and wasted a lot of time. Amazing place but we didn’t see enough of it.

What a shame the bus scam continues unaltered. Hope you had a great time anyway.

hi, Tony, great videos, thank you so much! tomorrow we are travelling to Sintra from Cascais by car. Do you haven information where to best park, or if there are free parking? thank you again

Hi Jeremy, we never went to Sintra by car but your best chances are near the train station. Parking in the core centre of Sintra is next to impossible. Have a great trip!

If I plan to do sight-seeing in Lisbon for 2 days and Sintra for a day trip, do you suggest I buy 72hrs Lisboa Card? Would the trip from Lisbon to Sintra transport and attractions covered by Lisboa Card? Thank you for your excellent videos, very helpful, we are visiting Lisbon in Feb 🙏

We would only but the Lisboa Card for 48 hours. While it includes the train to Sintra, in Sintra itself it only gives smalls discounts on the full price of the attractions. All the best!

Hello Tony, what do you think about renting a car for a day from Lisbon and going to Pena Palace, then Cabo de Roca and Cascais and returning back to Lisbon? We are not sure if we have parking problem with the car in Sintra.
@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal9 ай бұрын
Hi Halil, the thought of going to Sintra and only visiting Pena Palace sounds so strange to us? Why not visit the other wonderful sites in the city? In any case, with your rented car you would first have to struggle to find a place to park at the base of the mountain in Sintra and then you would have to get an authorized transport to go to Pena Palace. We recommend a full day for Cascais.
@happysilvester11 ай бұрын
First of all thank you so much for the video and warning about the bus, I did have a feeling that it wouldn't be that fun with the bus business. I wonder if it is just worthy taking car for rent for 2 days? I am only not sure of the car can get around there or this is a non emissions zone.
@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal11 ай бұрын
Hello, if you drive a car to Sintra the first thing you'll have to do is to find a place to park it safely - no mean task. You cannot drive up the mountain with a private car. We wouldn't rent a car just for Sintra.

@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal I watched your video about 20 mistakes and I realized that renting a car is not such a good idea. From Sintra train station how much time would you leave to get to the Palace entrance (where I show my ticket time) by Uber?

Between 10 and 15 minutes, plus the time you wait for the Uber ride to arrive.
