Budget Overland Build Ep7: Tires, Brakes & So Much More Drama...

The budget build has turned into a not so budget build. Our initial plan of spending R100k to fix and turn this Isuzu KB300/Dmax into an affordable Overlanding vehicle, has turned into an expensive maintenance exercise. It seems to have taken a turn for the better now, but our confidence is yet to develop around this lovable 4x4. It wants to work, it wants to be the vehicle we need, but mechanic after mechanic problems keep lingering. However we have progressed forward and here we are months later, with no warning lights on the dash, a fresh set of AT Good Year Wrangler Adventures, brand new Terain Tamer Brakes for the front and rear, some accessories on the canopy and a second hand roofrack for the canopy! We will make an overlander/camper out of this lemon, just watch this space!

Very True bud about going to specialist who work with a particular brand of Vehicle. Very hard to find them but they out there. Those vehicles are solid if well maintained. I like the brake upgrade but i have to say i am a fan of the power brakes that you have fitted on the Toyota, (Proudly SA). Just a note, consider doing a caliper refurbishment if they were not replaced. The front ones will sieze in a closed position overheating your brakes. Most vehicle require this every 8 to 10 years but the OEM does not tell you this.

Yup; that’s who it went to now and I can say this vehicle is driving like a dream at the moment. I haven’t let Andy drive it for a week 😂 I’m just loving the low down torque so much

@@RoamOverlanding I had the same 3L previously and I enjoyed that engine so much. I now have a 2.5L Isuzu and I'm itching to get it mapped because the low-down torque is almost non-existent. Probably also going to Gio for his mapping when I'm up in Jo'burg haha

Amazing Video Adrian, it's horrible to see what has come about with Andy's rig as I have the exact same rig, but double cab and had many similar issues.. Literally last week I reconditioned my slave and master cylinder for the clutch because it also went flat... but as some people have said in the comments, these bakkies are bullet proof and are underrated in my opinion! I am so excited for this series because I have been looking everywhere for inspiration for my rig and it's hard to find quality content like yours! Can wait to see how the suspension kit looks! I feel what Andy is going through. We also got an old Isuzu double cab (not 4x4) and we've been on the flatbed from Witbank to Midrand. Had the engine re-done at the engineers now we are battling with the cooling system. The car just won't stop overheating. Keep up the good work, keep creating some awesome content whilst enjoying the wild.

Sounds a interesting project hope is all good for your mate Andy. I’ve just started a project on a 2001 Ford ranger, overall is good truck but as you would think bits need replacing and the updates I would like to do. Just slowly tick along though it and enjoy making something cool. Go steady Sam

The engine is all good! The problem has been with turbo’s mainly… and poor workmanship on the reassembly. But it’s running like a dream now, so the latest guys did some good work!

Seriously love your videos, but I can't get my head around the "budget build" concept. Maintenance issues and the costing thereof aside, fitting REDARC, Lithium, Aluminium Canopies, Terrain Tamer products etc. is not "budget" in my opinion. Budget in my mind would be an inexpensive, yet reliable / effective DC-DC / MPPT charger combo (e.g. WRND 20A) vs. expensive / premium REDARC, Deep-cycle vs Lithium, Fibreglass vs. Aluminium, maybe Bilstein / Gabriel / Monroe shocks vs. Terrain Tamer etc. etc. Again, love the content, but I don't think this is a budget build - rather just a "not over the top Isuzu overland build" gone wrong.

Budget doesn’t always mean cheap. Sometimes it also means something that’s serviceable, lasts a lifetime and only needs to be bought once, or is actually cheaper in the long run. Hopefully I’ll explain it right in the videos.

Can I please just recommend selling the vehicle and rather getting a newer Isuzu this bakkie is beyond viable to repair again going forward. At this rate what's next and you can't put a price on confidence with a vehicle. The owner deserves peace of mind. Please help him. You should get R150000 for the bakkie a newer Isuzu should go for around R250000

I hear you and we have been to that point a few times this. year already. But this bakkie is driving beautifully at the moment and most of the problems seems sorted after its last visit to new mechanics who are isuzu specialists, so hopefully we are good from here out!

If you cant do it yourself dont do it… Take a weekend watch a load of “how to videos” on youtube and get a few beers and just fix it self…
