My wife and I hiked just 10 miles today in southern NH (no mountains even) and I was bushed! I kept thinking, suck it up...this is only HALF of what Taylor does every day! 🙂 Glad to see last night was no worries in that tent area where you were solo.

Hey Taylor! Damn right you can handle some wind, but you are also smart enough to know when call it. Huge thanks to Station 19E for looking out for hikers and to mom and Chet helping out at home. You are all amazing. That black AT sign was nice, have they been posted the whole trail or just this section? Karaoke looked fun? Did you belt one out? If not what would be your go to song? 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. -Grateful

Dave is AWESOME! My son and I spent Easter '19 at The Station (a double zero) and it was Awesome! We, too, got pulled in beacause of the weather. There were about 30-35 of us in The Barn ('19 was the last year folks could stay) and rain and forecast high winds prompted a fellow hiker to contact Mountain Harbour about a shuttle from there. About 15 of us hiked about 1-1.5 miles down the dirt road and met their bus. Unfortunately, there was not enough room for all of us there, so my small 'fam went to The Station. Being from NC, I've been back a couple of times. Dave shuttled my wife and sons, and a former student to Hughes Gap for a trip a couple of years ago. On that trip, our dog had foot issues, so he came out an picked Joy and my wife up from Overmountain. Awesome guy!! I look forward to revisiting The Station next year, as my son and I are having a 'do-over" hike. We're definitely making it to Maine in '23!!!

I'm sure it was purely awful out on the balds - the trees on Roan Mtn provide a lot of protection. I did that in the opposite direction a few years back in a storm, and it was a relief to cross Carver''s Gap and get into the woods. Your video of the evergreens flailing around on Roan is evocative. I bet that's a sensation that sticks with you.

Listen very closely. The low temperature blankets are a copy of the woobie or GI poncho liner. Tropical. The poncho liner goes into the GI poncho. The GI poncho in lovely shades of green has a hood. The poncho and liner can be used as a lightweight tropical sleeping bag. The modification is suggested. A head hole is it in the sleeping blanket or poncho. Said head sticks through into the poncho hood.Ahh! The head hole might artfully have edges sewn. The opening closed with buttons, snaps, or shoelace. Now poncho and subtropical blanket cover the pack and frozen hiker. It replaced the parka and field jacket. The blanket can still be carried and becomes a liner fur a lightweight higher sleeping bag. Needs a bigger hat size!

The issue with NBAT is that you really do miss the beauty of the southern mountains that the AT goes through. Roan Mountain is a go to area for us around early to mid June for the beautiful Rhododendron that blooms during that time. I really wish that you could see the Southern Appalachian Mountains during the spring and early summer. The Mountain Laurel and the spring wildflowers during late June are an absolutely amazing sight to see. I hope that someday you will be able to explore these southern mountains during the spring and summer. I love these mountains during the winter and early spring because it allows you to see the flow of the mountains but their beauty really occurs in the late April through the summer time frame. It’s kind of a bummer that you missed the magic of these beautiful mountains by coming through this early but I do understand your schedule and why you are hiking through here when you do. I hope that you’re safe and staying well.
