Prion strong! There was a case where the Dept. Of Fish and Game in my state did an experiment with one strain of Prion known as "Wasting Disease" where they buried a Deer corpse infected with it, cordoned the area around the burial plot off and a year later introduced Hamsters to eat the grass that had grown directly over the grave. All the Hamsters died from the same Prion, which had left the corpse and was carried by the root system of the grass. Prions are incredible strong and durable withstanding super heated steam they use to disinfected hospital waste before its shipped off, to the point that we don't know how to "kill" it, so much as we atleast know how to make it noninfectious enough to render it safe.

The book assumes very rapid mutation in the wake of the nuclear war, such that survivors are being attacked by fully developed, stable mutant species within 3 years of the war, depopulating the surface world, according to the knowledge available to the people of the Metro. The Kremlin is taboo for the Metro's rangers, because anyone who sees the glowing stars atop the Kremlin's roofs is hypnotically compelled to run toward and into the building, disregarding all dangers in their way, and is never seen again. How the mass in the basement is able to make the stars glow and exercise a charm-like ability through them is never explained, but it affects Artyom, so it's true. Fortunately for Artyom, he is intercepted having seperated from his group, having glanced at the stars instead of avoiding doing so, and is knocked unconscious so he can be restored to his senses. Later, his team enter the Kremlin from below, via tunnel, and while looking for a way through it to their destination trigger the mass into attacking them. The grey mass activates the escalators leading up from below the secret government metro station and floods the station concourse. It is only driven away by copious flamethrower fire, so it is susceptible to burning.

A prion infection would not be more, it would be even LESS resistant to ionizing radiation. Think of prions as "naked", virii as "heavily armoured soldier" and bacteria as "heavily armoured soldier behind a sandbag". Radiation is a high powered tank shell. It's gonna shoot straight through the first two, but the third has a meagre chance of survival. Radiation damages the molecules of a cell, and a prion has no protective covering for it, it's simply absorbing the radiation , while bacteria has 1) protective covering, making at least somewhat resistant to rads (compared to the others), and can mutate to utilize the radiation. That all being said, now I'll completely abandon all of it, and propose a wildly different solution. Radiotrophic Fungus. Radiotrophy can develop pretty much spontaneously in certain conditions (Chernobyl has it, and part of the reason the rads are dropping so fast in the area) especially in fungus. Fungi can be carnivorous, can be chemolithotrophyc (eating non-organic stuff), and it's spores can affect the minds of creatures to do pretty complex stuff (like Ophiocordyceps, which forces an ant to climb some sort of height above their own hive, kill said ant once it's in position, and rains spores down on the unwitting hive). Fungi can develop all sorts of nasty defensive capabilities, and a carnivorous fungus can even evolve snare traps to capture prey. Fungi are known to converge in evolution in many ways, so a fleshy outlook is not out of the picture. This would simply bypass the necessity for Magic in it's entirety. It's weird, but but this is the opposite end of the Shrimps. Shrimps look plausible, but actually are bloody nuts. This looks nuts, but actually plausible.

I want to point out specific fact about your statement on 3:00. Humans can't influence computer generated random number, as this number is not truly random, but pseudorandom (calculated from seed, if you run your generator two times, with same starting seed, you get same values). BUT your statement is not invalid, if you use physical random generators (for example generation based on Brown Motion of particle in water OR neutron decay of isotopes). Not contradicting your statement, just pointing out some clarification information. Obligatory sorry for bad English.

I figured the blob to have a pair of very sensitive touch neurons for feeling the shift in air when a creature is walking by. It would be able to tell what, where and when there is something in the area by feeling the displacement of air in that shape and direction. Since it lines the halls it gets a 3 dimensional view for accuracy if there are pores for sensing touch in various parts of its anatomy similar to how we can tell direction and distance based on sound and our head/ear configuration. Alternatively, sensing heat is something Snakes do proficiently for hunting at night. This creature may have the same pit organs for finding its prey which would help in a dark environment like the underground. There are many methods of sight. Our way of allowing light reflected off a surface to fall into our eyes is fairly powerful but not the only one and why I love looking at how species like these have adapted to newer heights of evolutionary potential! Of course if you don't dissect, test and recreate these phenomena I can see how attributing supernatural powers or even agency would make sense. Which is saddening that the only evidence for a 6th sense is anecdotal. I'd kill to be able to see through a kaleidoscope of dimensions! Whats more likely happening is a combination of our sensory organs hidden feats and our brains ability to think deeper than our consciousness. Knowing something is missing but not knowing what because your brain has processed it after seeing the room, cutting out the extra features, assembling it and bringing up the core things for your higher consciousness to work with; it still knows that previously this doesn't match previous images. Knowing when someones behind you because you feel the sudden shift of temperature, change in ambient audio from the presence of another blocking those waves, and feeling the air displacement. Knowing a loved one died because your brain has been collecting information about the individual over time and while you've ignored the details it hasn't understanding a likely timeline and the learned conditions for death to meetup with the conclusion that they are most likely gone thus creating the feeling of dread. All of these things help you survive by giving you "foreknowledge." I mean isn't it cool that we have practically two people inside of us?! The two hemispheres of our brains are for all purposes their own beings working through a single connection! Check out Dr. Strange Loves Evil Hand for understanding or any patient whose corpus callosum has been severed. tl;dr I'm a nerd who knows the most useless of details fangirling over these videos! Please keep it up I love your work!

In the game it's heavily implied that the Biomass was a Soviet experiment gone haywire. When teh Rangers first enter the control room they use teh computer and read out experiment results: 1. Died, 2. Destroyed, 3. Died etc These are clearly failed or terminated early instances of the biomass. I'd say it safe to assume that further mutation as a result of increased background radiation is possible. But the core of the biomass' biology was a result of Soveit genetic experiments.

It's simply the ability to sense where parts of your body are in relation to other parts (I.e. if you close your eyes and put your hand on a specific body part, you're using this sense. I forget what it's called, exactly.

So... what is more massive, the Biomass or the Leviathan from Dead Space?
@thedoruk63245 жыл бұрын
Leviathan made from thousands of human material, meanwhile biomass slowly 'constructed'. By biology wide, the biomass. But by the sheer immense size & strenght, Leviathan.

PrPsc's problem is that the plaques formed get in-between the Dendrite of a Neruon cutting off the connection meaning that part of the body can no longer function. The larger the pile of Misfolded Prion's the more they block even up to capillaries leading to lack of oxygen and brain function in that area + atrophy (Which causes the holes to develop). It's incurable because it's 17-20nm in size and can be considered more a force of nature than biological. The only way to "cure" it is to cut it out, out-heal the damage done or discover a way to inject an Enzyme capable of reversing one of the 3 parallel beta pleated sheets so it loses the property to stick together and change others. But the first one doesn't work too well because prions are too small to hope you got them all; the second, neurons don't go through mitosis so no "healing"; third good luck finding an Enzyme altering agent that doesn't alter something else critical in the body because anything going in you will affect all of you as it passes through the Circulatory System Highway. This is why this disease is so frustrating to deal with. It's a force and not something alive we can just melt, eat or send bacteriophages to kill. The body has no systems for allowing or denying it's creation like we can do against viruses and killing the host cell just spreads the "infection". PrPsc is like our bodies true self-destruct button. In which case the same could hold true for that monstrosity. If we choose to go the Prion "Bio"-Weapon route we might be able to reconstruct a mis-folded Prion that misfolds it's unique Prions killing it. The cool thing is, unlike a virus, there *should* be no chance of mutation and/or cross species transfer to us; likened to the plastic floating in our bodies, we can't break it down or use it but it doesn't kill us so it just hangs around no probs.

In the fanfic fallout Equestria project horizon they actually used a prion disease as a source of a significant amount of raiders. Like the absolute worst canibals rapists murderers were often infected by the raider disease. It was often spread to groups of people through infected animals and such and people being forced to be converted. Such as imagine a Yao guai ate a raider once and then later a group of settlers killed and ate it. Therefore another group of raiders. It was a really serious problem in a place called hoofington and the enclave of the fic actually tried to weaponize it.

Great video! In the books, it does talk about the mass having an insane influence on the brain. However, it also talks about how the mass consumed waste and even people (supposedly) months before the bombs even dropped. And some character ( I think) said something about entire city blocks being deserted because of it.

I had to go through this whole level, the spiderbug area when you’re separated, and the nosalis fight from the prologue with no ammo in any weapons after I went all gung-ho right at the beginning of the final levels. As a result of knifing these guys my gas mask was also completely shattered, with no human enemies around to take one from. 90% of this was just running away as Miller killed them so I appreciate the chance to actually take a closer look, great video as always!
