In the small, very small, town of Perfection in a Box canyon in the Sierra Nevada. Creatures begin pulling people underground seemingly from nowhere despite seismic graphs never having indicated they were there. These large worm like creatures hunt the mammals of this canyon or really anything making noise above. So today we will discuss how they may have come about and where they are headed!

I've always considered Graboids a type of mollusk more specifically, a distant relative of cephalopods. This explains the beak, tongues/tentacles, intelligence, strength, and explains the body shape which appears more mantle like then worm like. It also explains the question of internal structure as Graboids could posses a type of cuttlebone.

You're actually right. According to the creators of the original movies, graboids are genetically more similar to cuttlefish than any other animal. Most likely considering their nearly-impossible age, this implies that they share a last common ancestor with cuttlefish before they started evolving different forms like Pokemon several hundred million years ago.

Biologically they're likely an Ediacaran worm, which is fine. Complex life able to move under its own power first appear in the fossil record from the Ediacaran. They appear more like Priapulid Worms like the still existing today, Penis Worms. It's entirely possible they represent some Lazarus taxon that bridges the gap between simplistic Ediacaran life to Cambrian cephalopod, although shell-less cephalopods didn't really appear until the Jurassic which would technically make the Graboids more similar to Priapulid Worms or super-ancient deep sea slugs.

@@sorrenblitz805 That would make sense - it'd give a (very slight) explanation for how they started changing so radically if they appeared during the Cambrian Explosion. As for their lack of a shell... Well, who says they lack one? Their heads are clearly plated with some sort of solid material. Perhaps that's the remnants of a shell they had eons ago. I don't have a good answer as to why their heads look and sound more like chitin than calcium carbonate, but I doubt the creators of Tremors do, either, so that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Their multi-stage lifecycle is also weird, but not too dissimilar from tadpole-to-frog, though having each nymph spawn three adults which then fly is a _hell_ of a thing. I guess being the very first apex predator on the _planet_ let them evolve freely and expend tons of energy reproducing and reiterating. Then the first mass extinction happened, no new eggs hatched for a few thousand years and the remaining eggs got buried so deep only a few hatch each century.

they can go under the rocks, the land slide was caused when one of the two construction workers drilled into a graboids head while it was under the road and then got dragged up the side of the cliff causing the rocks to get knocked loose. we even see that two more guys got sent to check on the original construction crew and they both got eaten on the other side of the blockage

As a Tremors fan, I would like to say: The Graboids are perfect, their biology and characteristics are perfect for a desert environment. With that said, I really wish more thought was put into making them and their stages of the life cycle. Like instead of Precambrian, why not the Permian era, where their sizes make sense since there are large prey items that could sustain them because you know what the largest organism of the Precambrian was no larger than a signal cell...yeah it doesn't make sense, now does it? Or Devonian, whatever, the point is I wish they had plausible origins. I also wish the Shriekers made sense as well, like yeah have them be terrestrial but also possess echolocation as well as thermal sensors to find prey and hell even use spear tongues to injure prey before eating them, and instead of making them "Hermaphrodites" that happen to reproduce, why not just make them reproduce Asexually? (Like seriously two science goofs in one movie is far too many, and from a scientist no less, Kate you lost your science card!) Or better yet, make use of the hermaphrodite angle and have them get each other knocked up and spew thousands of new Shriekers and after the birthing, they become Assblasters (I'd probably give them a respectable name like Fire-worms) that can rip prey into shreds and can command the Shriekers like a wolf pack, and they can birth 4 Graboids, however, I think the fire blasting angle shouldn't be a use of flight, but a defensive measure like the Bombardier beetle, having proper wings for flight equipped with claws (something like those Cave creatures from The Cave). You know, useful adaptations that seem plausible for such species. I don't know, how about you, Roanoke? Thoughts on this or do you have a better suggestion for the lifecycle of the Graboid? To be honest, I do have issues with the Shriekers and Assblasters, at least how they operate and their biology. Like how can you go from being giant worms that can sense vibrations to being creatures that use thermal sensing and have no vibration sensing capabilities? Plus I imagine such a lifeform would be fucked, because they'd be bumping into everything without a form 3D perception and not knowing where you are in relations to open spaces and solid objects, just saying infrared can only get you so far, if you don't have other senses or can perceive your surroundings, hence Echolocation being used to navigate your surroundings.

On the dirt dragon to loud doggo transition- The way they blew out of the worm and the fact that they left so much biomass behind felt more like a parasitic hatching than birth. Consider they might be some form of symbiotic parasite. Two animals that evolved to co-reproduce. Assuming the dirt dragons have a much longer natural lifespan, the doggos may consume their reproductive organs and preclude their natural lifecycle. This would explain the DRAMATIC change from worm thing to asexual-chicken-dog-bombadier-thing. Given bigger prey and no parasite, the dirt dragons may have behaved like they do in tremors 1 until they reproduce by splitting in half, for example, every few centuries. They only ones that survived a changing environment are the ones that were infected with the doggo parasites, who then carry the eggs containing both of the animals' dna using the egg's natural stasis mechanism. Also, the ONLY gotdang way they're precambrian is if they scrubbed the ENTIRE planet clean of multicellular life. I assumed they were responsible for other massive extinction events. You know, like apocalypse cicadas.

A good use of CGI is for it to be unnoticed because you aren't supposed to notice that something is CGI, which is the sad thing about it. You will never remember the CGI on a good scene because you will just remember the scene itself, but people will always point to the CGI if it's used on a bad scene on a film.

The thing that I find to be the most unbelievable thing about these movies, isn't the ancient dinosaur worms that hunt people through vibrations in the ground, but the fact that these pepole are out in the Southern Nevada Desert in tank tops, and don't look like beef jerky. It's on average 110 during the summer out here, and gets to 115-120 or weeks on end in July.

One thing I love about the Graboids during the first movie is that learn as the movie goes on with the people. When the people learn and use a new tactic to survive, the Graboids adapt and learn to overcome it. they take shelter on the roof of buildings: the graboids dug under the foundation to tweaking it enough to take the whole building down. Case using the CAT which is too heavy for them to drag like cars: start digging under the CAT when it stops and then lay a trap ahead of the CAT to take it out. they discover the bomb was a trick and return the attack. and finally, the last Graboid pretends to leave to try and trick its prey. I just can't but be amazed at how they are showing that the creatures can learn which is rare from monster movies at the time.

At 9:30 when Burt drops the pipebomb, it doesn't kill one of the Graboids. Ronda stated after the first one was killed in the aqueduct that there were "three more of these things". Given Burt kills the second one at his house, the other two survived the pipebomb.

I grew up with this movie series I Love It, to say the very least, it was my childhood. I was such a fan of it my dad got us to the 30th anniversary reunion at the film museum. Where I got to see and meet the directors and actors who made the movie possible. It was absolutely amazing! I loved every second of it and I got to personally talk to Micheal Gross himself! The actor who played the main character Burt Gummer. He was kind and funny. It was great to talk and know more about the films I grew up with. Tremors will always be my favorite movie series.

Kevin Bacon wanted to make, I'm guessing a kind of a sequel/soft reboot series a few years back. The biggest difference was that it was going for a more serious/horror type show. I consider myself a pretty decent fan of these movies. In my opinion, I think the reason this franchise has done so well, and has a pretty decent sized fan base is because its lighthearted, and everyone making them just has fun with it. But, I personally would have loved to have seen Graboids that would make you sh@t your pants, and earn the respect of being giant, underground, ass eating monsters. Oh, what could have been. By the way, Mr. Bacon got a pilot made, but the studio b@$ched out at the last minute.

Owned this on VHS. It influenced my daily life in the 90's. It changed my speech, I quoted it so much, it had an impact on my entire circle of friends. I like the idea of the graboids evolving after the extinction of the dinosaurs instead of originating in the pre-cambrian era like the second movie said. Before the cambrian explosion, all life was single cell prokaryotes. After, there was animal life but only in the ocean and the life cycle of the graboids and shriekers is too complex to be earlier than the cambrian explosion

IF I remember correctly, in Tremors 2 the geologist identifies a fossil found in the area as being a graboid setae, and dates it to be pre-Cambrian I believe. Also, in the 3rd film, a government agent refers to them as a desert reptile. Some food for thought!

Mad Max 2, the Tremors series, After the Bomb and Red Dawn made me a prepper at a young age. I spent all of my Christmas money one year on survival gear and MRE's and I still refuse to drive anything that isn't EMP resistant. I even have a black GMC Jimmy K5 4x4 just like Burt's from the first movie. They are an excellent off road vehicle and very easy to repair and maintain so it was a great vehicle for a prepper character like Burt. It could have definitely made it up "the jeep trail" if the graboids had not pulled it under.

The worms in the Tremors are actually relatively young, its show in 4 that they grow rather quickly. They go from small stage Graboids to full grown within about a week or two. In the smaller form, they actually have boney plates along the back that are shed upon a certain point of growth.

This is probably one of my all time favorite monster movies. The characters (that live) make smart decisions and not dumbo's who only live bc of plot convenience. The worms are clever and actually learn from each other's mistakes to make them menacing movie monsters. I loved your breakdown Roanoke! In the fandom (so granted, it’s not canon) they have been listed as a cephalopod, related to squid and octopuses. The fandom altered their age from pre-Cambrian relics as described in Tremors 2 (mainly because nothing in the fossil record appears to be more advanced than jellyfish or sponges, so there would nothing for them to feed on or compete with) as they have both a beak-like structure and tentacle-like structures. Also, cephalopods have a donut shaped brain that wraps around their esophagus, if they don’t sufficiently process their food with their radula, they can actually damage their brain if they swallow something too big. It is very possible that when they impact rock or concrete, that their beak (or even cuttlebone if they possess one) is actually crashing through their brain and killing them. To me, they evolved in early seas, feeding on trilobites and other creatures by burrowing in the seabed and attacking when they get too close (like a bobbit worm, but having no relation, possibly just evolving convergently). If you compare graboids to Cambrian and Silurian lifeforms, such as anomalacaris, they no longer appear to be very alien anymore (sorry Earl). They wouldn’t have moved on to land-dwelling until millions of years later when life actually existed and seaways literally dried up to form deserts, so maybe they just adapted the ability to breathe oxygen when the climate demanded. As for as the metamorphosis goes, that would have been present all along and not adapted later. So maybe they would’ve had a free-swimming stage later in life (appearing similar to a cuttlefish or squid) that would mate and lay eggs. The larval stage introduced in Tremors 4 is reminiscent of a trilobite so maybe it adapted this appearance either through convergent evolution or also from evolving from some sort of snail/limpet like creature with a shell (like nautiloids, cuttlefish, and squid did) and remained like that in the sea floor. The legs of the shrieker/assblaster stage would have had to evolve from some sort of fin (like that of squid and cuttlefish) or from a modified cilia-like spike. The heat sensing apparatus would have had to come later once they invaded the land. The only problem with this though is why would it do this, are they modified eyes? If they are, why wouldn’t that evolve around the same time nautiloids did? Perhaps that too was something that was always present as well and later only developed when they were not burrowing. (If you search cephalopods in Wikipedia, under biology you can see a burrowing octopus with its eye jutting out of the sand to watch for predators). It could have been used to sense light in general and later adapted to primarily sense infrared light. This wouldn’t have been useful at all, however, until the introduction of either mammals, warm-blooded stem mammals or possibly even mesothermic dinosaurs as nothing was warm-blooded at the time. This also wouldn’t useful at all in a desert environment during the day as even a human with a fever would be totally encompassed by the heat of the surrounding sand and rock. Sorry movies, but shriekers and assblasters would have be entirely nocturnal. The real problem comes with the way they reproduce which seems to be asexually through feeding. Now, there are a few species of lizard that are female entirely with no males as they simply lay unfertilized eggs that produce female drones. These just so happen to be animals that live in highly inhospitable environments too, so perhaps as the seas receded and food became scarce, they began to evolve legs outside their larval stage and also adopted this form of reproduction. The truly dumb part of this though comes from the idea that they drop or bud off embryos or egg cells inside their stomachs (as described by the original writers) by simply eating enough. This seems nearly perpetual (although the creators limited it to three per shrieker) but perhaps the graboids do the same. Maybe by eating enough and budding embryos inside their stomachs, the shriekers consume the entirety of their mothers (as do parasitic wasps larval with tarantulas hosts) and eat their way out; if they have sufficiently gorged, they produce another offspring (this would clear up the discrepancy between Tremors 2 detailing that only three shriekers could come from a single graboid whereas Tremors 3 retcons this to 6). At some point they obviously grow wings and maybe that’s a modified version of the side fins from past ages. The weirdest part of this, though, is the adding the internal combustion launching system that, I guess, could be a highly modified siphon (akin to cephalopods) but it incorporates flammable materials instead of water pressure. This could have always been present, becoming obsolete in the earlier stages once they left the water and being reused in the final stage but it doesn’t necessarily make complete sense (like any of what I just said does) because combustion would have zero purpose underwater and it is a rather odd ability to just randomly evolve later in their evolutionary history in a species that is already this specialized. The assblasters then either develop a new egg or do not drop their last one (which perhaps develops further to birth a graboid) and Lather. Rinse. Repeat. This is a highly advanced creature but a lot of this can be summed up much easier if you consider the Syfy Series canon with the use of Mix-Master DNA splicing. Perhaps the only true from is what we saw in 1889 from Tremors 4 and the shrieker/assblaster stages are genetic mutations from either eating an escaped mix-master mutant or being experimented on and released/escaped. Now this obviously would conflict with the later sequels with the African and soon-to-be Asian species but I personally don’t consider those films to be canon. They aren’t made by the original creators/producers and are not at all responsible for those films. The major changes they made to the graboids is unacceptable to say the least. The graboids basically fly, have way too many tusks and their tentacles can separate and snake away like a separate animal with its own brain. The assblasters are portrayed as basically an asshole with wings and all in all, it’s a shame what they did. They even continue to use the same models as the 6th film’s African species, as opposed to the American species even though they are in Canada (so there must be copyright issues that they’re running into). I’m not trying to be mean but they come across more as really bad fan fiction (as all sequels do these days) than a true successor. Well, I think that about covers it.

Fun Fact: The scene where Burt and Heather fought the one in the basement was used using both a large scale animatronic as well as an actual hand puppet and a green screen. They use a clever shot of Burt dropping a rifle on the ground and then the camera panning from it to the creature to hide a jump cut between the two different filming techniques.

I remember a point in the second movie was that the Graboids' tissue matched fossils that were dated to pre-Cambrian times, not nearly anything post-dinosaur. (realistically it wouldn't make sense since they wouldn't have large enough sources of food to sustain themselves though, plus no reason at all to develop the Shrieker or Assblaster phases) Also note that there are 3 types, as Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell happens in Canada, and those Arctic graboids are distinct from those in southern North America and Africa.
