that "ill know, ill know" is so haunting. it speaks to a pain in my heart I'm not sure how to articulate. it's bittersweet and I can't stop listening to it, no matter how hard it makes me want to cry

The song tells the story of a woman who was held captive by her husband, with no way out. To make her stay, he went as far as adopting twins as a gift for her. It's a haunting tale of the lengths some people will go to keep control over others, even at the cost of their happiness and freedom. The song captures the woman's pain and longing for a life she knows she deserves but feels powerless to attain. It's a powerful reminder of the importance of recognizing and breaking free from abusive relationships.

Guess im gonna be that person this time Ronnie Spector was a singer in the Ronettes under the label Philles Records, which was founded by Phil Spector. After a 2 year affair, Phil divorced his wife and lived with Ronnie in a Beverly Hills mansion. They were married 2 years later in 1968. The relationship was manipulative and abusive. Phil sabotaged Ronnie's career after their marriage and forbade her from performing. He surrounded their home in barbed wire and guard dogs, and took all her shoes to stop her from leaving the house. When he did allow her to go out, she had to drive around with a life-size dummy of Phil. He threatened her with a gun on multiple occasions, and installed a gold coffin with a transparent cover in their basement, telling her that he would kill her and display her corpse if she tried to escape. in 1971, he adopted twin boys and "gifted" them to her on Christmas. He used their lives to threaten her and make sure she wouldn't leave him. She did eventually escape in 1972, barefoot and without any belongings. A long legal battle ensued, where she was unable to perform for money because Phil owned all her tracks. In the end, he was forced to pay her over $1m in royalties, and she was granted custody of their 3 children. In 1982, Ronnie remarried Jonathan Greenfield and had two kids. She wrote a memoir about her life, career, and marriage to Phil. She died on January 12 2022 after battling cancer. She was 78. Phil Spector died in 2021 after spending the last 14 years in prison for a murder he committed in 2003. He was 81. ++ they are the two people on the cover art of this song ☹️.

The meaning of the song: The story is about phil and Ronnie Spector, (her being mentioned in the song, also an 60s pop-star,) to cut it short, Phil was abusive to Ronnie, and often threatened her to death if she ever tried to leave him. The lyrics said “You can change your name or change your mind” Because she couldn’t change her name, because everyone knew her as Ronnie. The song is called “Christmas Kids” because Phil Spector adopted 3 children as a Christmas “Gift” and left in 1 bucket to act as a toilet for the kids. He got the kids so he could make Ronnie emotionally attached to them so she wouldn’t leave. He also threatened Ronnie Spector with a gold coffin that he would display her corpse in. He also took her shoe’s so she couldn’t escape that easy. She luckily escaped threw a broken window. Veronica Yvette Bennett. (Her full name) 1943-2022.

This song reminds me of my old abusive work place. How all of us became so close because we had to protect each other from management. How fucking manipulative management was. My old boss used to tell me that the grass isn’t greener on the other side. It was his way of saying it doesn’t get better than this job. I was 16 when I started working their and I opened the restaurant with them. I was their first hire. I worked my way from every position in the place. By the time I was 18 I was a bartender. I regret staying as long as I did. It left me so damaged by the end. Everyone I cared about slowly but surely left and I stopped having reasons to stay. I was left in charge of the bar by the end of my employment because we didn’t have a manager for it and all the other bartenders left or where fired. I trained all the new bartenders, I wrote the bar books, I bought the equipment, I trained the new management on how to do stock of the bottles on my last day, I also did inventory. I never complained about the extra work. I took pride in what I did. I cared so much. I never got payed for any of the extra shit I did either and I never asked for more pay. My wake up call was when my manager told me that “ You can’t say this restaurant hasn’t done more for you than you’ve done for it.” I walked out that day without doing my two weeks. I said my goodbyes to the bar staff and the kitchen manager (the only good manager we had) and I told the new manager to not let those fuckers turn her into a monster like them. I still have so much baggage from that experience. This song just captures the manipulation and feelings I had during this time so well.

Explanation: Veronica Ronnie Ronnette was the lead singer of the girl group the ronnettes, she was married to Phil Spector, famous by wall sound, Phil was abusive to Ronnie and Ronnie even claimed Phil had a golden coffin in his basement and Phil would kill her if she tried to leave, in Christmas Phil got 2 kids for Ronnie to get her back hence the title (the 2 kids were named Louis and Gary) Phil hid Ronnie’s shoes so she couldn’t escape, she finally signed divorce papers and escaped the man who made her life hell.

This songs and the other songs from Roar in general give me such, such a strong sense of nostalgia and regret everytime i hear them. Especially this one. My brain just associates every song from Roar with something i regret or a past experience, that just succeeds in haunting me and leaving me sleepless. This, personally is a song i associate with both something from the past, but from the future too. It reminds me firstly of Luz Noceda and her story in the owl house, reminds me of all the friends i had no trouble making but so much trouble keeping. It reminds me of the inevitable future, me finally moving out from this school and going into a better one. I wanted this and nobody seems to even think of missing me. But I'll miss them somehow. I'm not sure if this choice was a good one anymore. Sorry for the long comment but i just had to write this somewhere.

an explanation to the lyrics: in 1969, Ronnie Spector, the lead singer of the Ronnettes (a popular band back then) married Phil Spector. Phil was a famous record producer and songwriter, discovering the Beatles, the Ronettes, and many more golden pop stars. Phil was known for his charm, but behind closed doors he was a horrible husband. He essentially held ronnie captive in his mansion. He hid her shoes at night so she couldn’t run away, as well as lining the property with barbed wire fences and guard dogs. The scariest of these precautions, perhaps, was the golden coffin he kept in the basement. He threatened to kill ronnie and bury her in the coffin if she tried to escape. The only time she could leave the mansion was once a month, to go to the store for menstrual care products along with an appointed body guard. Ronnie lived this was for a long time, until one day, seemingly out of the blue, Phil comes home with two twin boys. Ronnie asked him who they were, and Phil replied “Merry Christmas!” hence the title-“christmas kids”. Phil had adopted the two boys without and consent from Ronnie, who became their mother. While Ronnie became a mom, hers was becoming worried. She had lost all contact with her beloved daughter. The details are fuzzy, and I am unsure how it happened, but somehow Ronnie’s mother freed her from her prison. The boys went back to their biological father, and Ronnie and Phil got a divorce in 1978. Phil forced her to give up a lot of money, and threatened her life with hitmen he had hired. although Ronnie is dead now, the horrors she went through will not be forgotten. Phil went on to murder actress Lana Clarkson in the same mansion in 2003. he was sentenced to only 19 years in prison. Ronnie tragically passed away due to cancer on January 13, 2022. Phil spector died on January 16, 2021.

For people who are lost this song is ahout an abusive relationship about music producer phil spector and ronnie frome the ronnets phill threated to end her if she ever left him and he threatend her with many physical tourture and by christmas kids hes talking about when he adopted kids on Christmas for her but he abused his kids too she left him and he later went to jail for murder (thats whole diffrent story) but people shouldn't remember her from her sad past they should remember her by her being an amazing music maker and also she says she misses the days her and phill made music together (meaning phill still has a spot in her heart)

Funny thing. I was obsessed with this song when I had a crush on my soon to be abusive boyfriend. And was still obsessed when we were together,, little did I realize and less likely to be excited about was that this song was almost like speaking my future. Kinda funny but at the same time, this song exactly describes how horrible it felt to be with him. Yet again this an amazing and well written song

This song as some might know is about Ronnie Spector(Her and her ex husband are on the album cover btw!), now i've always loved her music, with the Ronettes and her solo stuff that had failed. i also got her memoir, the song is basically about the time she met Phil Spector, her record producer who she had an affair with and married because "Either you tour with the beatles or you marry me", she was so much in love with him, so of course she married, so the ronettes had to get someone else to go on the tour. While Ronnie married Spector, over the years he was losing his sanity, he kept her away from her sister Estelle a lot and her cousin Nedra, he threatend her with a gun, he threatend the beatles with a gun, he shot in the studio from what i heard, and he kept her captive in his mansion, surrounded with barbed wire and guard dogs and FORBIDDING her to perform ever again and sabotaged her career, he was extremely abusive, yelled at her for days for even asking "Hey Phil wanna go back to the studio?". Phil had said he would put her in a golden glass coffin if she ever attemped to escape him, as for the title "Christmas kids", it refrences the fact Phil had surprised her with 2 kids for christmas, which i believe was to force her to stay with him even more. Ronnie was only able to leave the house by having A LIFE SIZED DOLL of Phil. she even attended alcoholics anonymous just to get out of that house. The abuse had gone on for years until she made her escape with her being able to call her mother, barefoot and no belongings, just running to survive. 1972 was her escape. However it wasn't over. Ronnie had a long legal battle because in the 60's she NEVER gained royalties from spector. She had won later on and then she would try living her life, which was a massive struggle, she was alone, her sister Estelle from the Ronettes was schizo, a homeless drug addict, her cousin Nedra was a born again christian and wasn't much around Ronnie i'm sure, She was friends with big names, yet she never was able to regain her fame she once had no matter what she did, her alcohol and smoking had also worn out her voice over the years just to find distractions to get rid of the trauma even after remarrying with Jonathan Greenfield(her present time husband) and having children of her own. Meanwhile her sister lived homeless, drug addict and a schizophrenic. Estelle passed away in 2009 from cancer and Ronnie passed away from cancer in 2022, they both were close sisters yet so far apart after the split up from the ronettes and their life issues. Nedra Talley Ross is the last living member of The Ronettes. I will never forget that day personally because she was stunning, she even talked with me once and saying "Your mother raised you right", never forgetting that, she was an angel.
