I do love prayer plants, they do well with distilled water or RO water. If you can't use that treat the water with stuff for fish, and they will live you for it. Mine are doing terrific, when I change my water for fish tanks I use that to water my plants. They live that and are growing so much better

Yes for the calathea pinstripe. I moved it from its sweet spot and it started dying on me. At first it was thriving and then suddenly died on me. I didn’t see any bugs. I tried to water propagation but it didn’t work. 😂 my philodendron pink princess is thriving in the south facing window so I just leave it alone in a wide self watering container. I have a Burkin and I believe it’s worth $5-10 bucks and not the crazy prices it use to fetch for.

Memo, this series is so much fun 😃 It greatly helps me to expand my plant blacklist 😃I hope the series will continue 🙂 Let´s roast them😀 As much as I love calatheas, I must agree on Ornata, as it´s a very fragile diva. However, in my opinion no. among calatheas should be the White Fusion - the leaves are super fragile, very easily eaten, grows very slowly given the whiteness (for a calathea) and it´s the biggest spidermite magnet I have ever seen. It´s a nightmare driving one insane. I´d say after no. 1 the White Fusion, there is nothing for a long time, than comes the Ornata (fragile pest magnet, and loses the stripes when mature and than it looks dull - they have a mature one in a local botanical garden, where it looks quite bad too 😀). After these two, a long time nothing and then the rest of the genus. These two are the kind that nearly made me cry from despair. I was relieved when they (and all the spidermites and thrips on them) were gone. Despite my horrible experience with these two, I love calatheas and they still present a majority in my collection (although every single one I bought had spidermites in the soil). I also admit that Ornata was among the calatheas that got me into this hobby. I´d recommend these two to noone. Nevertheless, if I could keep White Fusion and Ornata separatedly from any other living plant (min. 2 m away, preferably in a glass cabinet), and if I could get them as babies, I´ll try again (because I´m much stronger pest fighter than I used to be), given I was in a mad and adventurous mood. When I occasionally sell calatheas, I write a prior warning to all potential naive beginners not to buy them 😀 And if they persist, I send them my calathea manual, so that they can still back off in time 😀

I agree with all of these but especially: ahhh yeah calatheas... I didn't really have had plants prior to 2020 but i have two very curious cats and prayer plants where one of the safest options to introduce my cats to plants. That was one year of really hard lessons, some of them i'm happy to share: 1. Stromanthe Magic Star: Just remove the crispy tips... Literally no one will notice. Also: has a toxic relationship with spider mites. 2. Calathea Orbifolia: Thrips Magnet #1 - i had a really big one but it was constantly having thrips and it got so annoying i stopped caring and put it on the balcony to die. 3. Maranta leuconeura: Looks so bad when it dies... It was just standing in a draft for a bit and wasn't able to recover for whatever reason. I got a new one since and had it for years in really decent condition, it dies back in winter every year but it does very well in spring and summer. 4. If you're a beginner, masochist and want to have a prayer plant: Go with Marantas, they're pretty chill and easy to propagate when sh*t hits the fan. (... and it will hit the fan eventually) 5. Honorable mentions for prayer plants that worked well for me: Calathea rufibarba, Calathea Musaica (reallllly lovely plant, super hardy as well), Maranta kerchoveana (the varigated one looks soooo amazing) 6. I learned that my cats don't give a flying f about plants. 7. Calatheas are (imo) pretty expensive for what they are tbh. 8. Switch to philodendrons. Hope you enjoyed that - have a lovely day and thanks for the video Memo! 🌈💖✨

I love my birkin 😮 Yes it grows slow, but I'm getting different variations on the leaves; some white with green pinstripes, white with some sectoral green variegation, a quarter of red in with the green, and half-moon green & white. I am still waiting for the leaves to size up but I like the compactness, and it fits in nicely amongst other plants. My PPP is just meh. It's not just the muddy colouring with sporadic pink variegation that lets this plant down, the growth habit is far worse, especially when growing from a juvenile. The leaves of mine are just getting smaller and smaller and it's nowhere near due an up-pot. And hoyas 😮😮😮 How dare you 😂😂😂 I've only ever had one hoya get Mealybugs, and after an alcohol/horticultural soap/water mix sprayed all over the plant, a full repot with all the old soil removed, and then 2 further fortnightly sprays with the same mixture the Mealies were completely eradicated. Calatheas and Spidermites however are a pain in the royal.......and on that note 🤣🤣🤣

All but 2 are small, stuck and stunted, although there's no yellowing...time to chop and prop 😛 I also bought tiny Scindapsus Moonlight and dark form that year... the dark form died immediately, the Moonlight now has a whole 3 leaves 😅 I admit I killed my Birkin, (yes to the weird growth and reverting), I hated it so much 😇 ps: don't touch my Hoyas!!! Your Birkin is a slow grower? How?! 😂 I think both the PPP and the Birkin have come all the way around to where the backlash against the hype has subsided, and the people who like them for what they are can enjoy them the way they did before the big craze (the PPP, at least, since the Birkin is fairly new). I acquired both plants long after they were cool, and mostly for free, and I am getting a lot of enjoyment out of the Birkin, which I got as a tiny baby that looked just like any other baby philodendron. It’s grown pretty quickly, and it has been fun to see the leaves get rounder and develop the stripes. It’s just getting to the point needing a second repot. In my philo group, I have learned that it’s pretty common for them to start throwing half-moons and then reverting to rojo Congo as they age. But the half moons are honestly stunning. I haven’t had the PPPs long enough to know how they’ll grow for me. But a couple of friends picked up some low-variegation ones for cheap at our local home improvement store, and they both love them. They are growing prolifically, and for people who don’t have a bajillion philodendron already, the leaves have a lovely shape and it gives a nice, tropical feel to a room.
@silviap4478 Жыл бұрын
I have heard multiple times that the birkin can revert but it's the first time I heard about sectorial variegation. When does this typically happen? I have had mine for 4 years now and most of the time it sat in a very dark corner (I didn't know what I was doing). It only had green leaves left when I really took notice of it. I put it into an east facing window and all stripes returned on the new leaves. Now new leaves are almost white and they darken as they mature. But I never had sectorial variegation 😮 I also keep it pretty small and take the top cuttings to put them into soil again every couple years

I think Hoyas aren't really good as "houseplants" which makes it difficult for those living outside of the tropics. I never get to have so many problems with them back when I have heaps in the Philippines because I grow them with Vandaceous orchids outside. However when I moved into a more temperate climate, I need to keep Hoyas indoors and I always have pest problems, no matter what I do.

Sometimes, the plant journey feels endless, right? 😂🌱❤️

@Houseplantygoodness yes, but you have a way of making things a little funnier in the process lol. Thank you! I couldn't stop thinking of you saying this yesterday. Every now and then, I would let out a little chuckle, and my daughter asked me what was funny(she's 6) and I just said "just something funny I had heard today". So, yeah, thanks for that and please keep up with that wonderful humor. It really brightens my day to watch your videos and I'm sure others feel the same. You really make the journey a joyous one. 😊 💚

I like my coffee lightly roasted, but for a plant roast... The darker the better! Edit: I got a nicely sized Birkin for 10 euro at IKEA last August. It was very healthy, and I divided it into two to give one away. It had two leaves still in the cathaphyls, which unfurled beautifully, and it's now growing two new cathaphyls, with one leaf already started to unfurl. I like the stripes, it's why I bought it, and since I live in a small flat, I'm quite happy for it to stay compact. I recently bought a very small Calathea Orbifolia, and while it's not really doing much so far, I really love it. If it dies, I might try again.

Love the coffee roast analogy! 😂 And it sounds like your Birkin is thriving. Cheers to more plant successes! ☕🌿

I got a scindapsis silvery ann as an unrooted cutting, a gift with some plants. I took over 6 months to get roots and after a year has only produced one leaf, at least it is growing now. i never liked the birkin, ugly thing. Your video of mealybugs still is not a mealybug. Way to fast moving, it is a beneficial bug that eats mealybugs, spint and thrips it's a chrysop

yes, you are so right about the mealybug video. A caterpillar of some sort I think.

That's some determination with the scindapsus! I know the mealybug is the beneficial bug, but sadly I cannot find a good video of mealybugs and the ones i have taken are a bit blurry, will keep trying to find a better, true Mealybug video. 🐜🍃

@@Houseplantygoodness As long as a plant is alive I will try to keep it alive and some take very long to root. And I have some succulents so I am used to plants looking the same for ages and ages :)

I'm with you on all of these--except I'll probably never give up my whiny, wonderful melano. When she's happy, she's fabulous! I'm not a huge fan of most variegated plants because of the 'why' they're variegated. Like the PPP & Birkin prove, having a chronic viral infection doesn't make for a necessarily healthy or well-formed plant. So many just look diseased to me.
@Houseplantygoodness Жыл бұрын
Totally get you on the melano! 💚 And variegated plants can indeed be a hit or miss. Always a surprise with them! 😄

I laughed so hard on the ornata, because it'as SO true ! BUT I've cracked the code of my calatheas : my ornata is far away from the light because I can litterally ear it hissing at it and the orbifolia was the drama queen of the year until I put her in a self watering pot, 4 meters away from any windows, and now she rewards me with packs of 4 leaves at a time (litteral coming back from the dead). Hope this helps those in trouble ! 🪴
