Taylor Swift not only called the album Midnights, she insisted that it be released at the stroke of midnight US time (I can't remember whether it was Eastern or Pacific or whatever), in Australia, it was 3pm. I work in music retail and we were under strict instructions not to put the album on the shelves or sell a single copy until 3pm. It was ridiculous. She also released the album with 5 different covers on CD and and 4 different colours of vinyl so her fans would buy 9 copies of the same album. The album was going to go number 1 anyway, that was just greedy. New albums by Metallica and Slipknot also made it to number 1 but they didn't pull any of that crap. With all that said though, Taylor is a decent enough songwriter and singer. She's far from the worst out there in the pop world. She knows how to come up with a catchy but not annoying melody. Her biggest skill though is marketing, she's a genius at that.

The Grammys were always a fake piece of garbage of a popularity context by clueless normies. With that said, some Grammys were more egregious than others. Jethro Tull over Metallica back in the day was indeed very egregious, as was Foo Fighters over Dream Theater. Metallica over Spirit Box wasn't egregious Imho because Spirit Box didn't deserve to win either. I'd say Slipknot or Disturbed should have won this year not Metallica/Spirit Box. Regardless, it's still all meaningless, I just wholeheartedly agree with you about not understanding the so called 'controversy' of Spirit Box losing it this year or Metallica winning it(which lets face it, everyone knew would happen, popularity and all).

Everybody votes in the general categories so it makes sense that pop music tends to dominate in those categories. By design its supposed to be bland and broad appealing. That is why a lot of times when rock or hip-hop when AOTY they tend to be very poppy versions. Something like Metallica, Nirvana, Nas, Kendrick, is at a disadvantage to win AOTY because they are not poppy enough despite being very popular in their own right. The only exception to this is sometimes Jazz musicians like Jon Batiste, and Herbie Hancock will win. That is because there is over 90 something categories and nearly half of them comprise of "Fine Art School" genres of music like classical, orchestral, jazz, etc. Thus, those people make up a massive voting block within the Grammys voter base, and can get their own some wins despite not being mainstream. Rock and Hip-hop do not have enough categories, people voting for them to pull that off.

Metallica and their fanboys have no right to bitch about that loss to Jethro Tull after thirty years of having a monopoly on the metal categories whenever they release an album.
