I think the theme of the lyrics resonated with Paul in a way, and on a personal level, so much so that he never forgot about this song and always wanted to find a way to finish it. It's a Paul passion project through and through, and because of that, and because the theme is about loss and missing someone and the importance of memory and carrying someone's spirit with you, I think it's more well suited as a "final song" than Free as a Bird or Real Love.There are specific narratives here about the band itself, and meta-narratives tons of listeners can connect with through their own experiences of loss. It's darker. It's real. It's emotional. It's great.

This is a happy, interesting moment in music history.. as long as The Beatles really end with this track. Otherwise it will be at best a footnote to history, or at worst be the beginning of a tacky trend. This is the kind of thing that, if it happens frequently, may end up cheapening a lot of older artist’s legacies. In short, I like this but I hope we tread carefully.

That’s a ballsey title. Haven’t even seen the video, but I’m a little sad at the reception. I absolutely love the song, even though some people aren’t fond of it. It’s a perfect bookend and even has similar words to the last words that John spoke to Paul: “Now and then”, being similar to “think of me now and again”.

I think that you are right. It is a bit like when parents divorce, the kids want them back together to continue living as a family, but sometimes it is better when people part ways before the tension makes them mortal enemies. Nevertheless, I am sure that many situations could also be salvaged if treated with goodwill soon enough. Getting older made me also accept more the cycles of life and cherish memories without expecting to repeat them over and over while moving on to new stuff. Anyway, thanks again Mike for this video.

That’s probably the best analogy I’ve heard about this. Not a huge Beatles fan but I like their music, I can’t understand even to this day why people dwell on who broke up the band, that’s probably the least important thing to think about. At the end of the day, the Fab Four ended up happier exploring their own paths in music and I appreciate them better for that.

Spot on. I've always found it dumb to take artist's choices so personally, be it a breakup or a stylistic change. They're the ones that have to live their lives, day in & day out. They're free to go anywhere their muse takes them and we're free to like it or not. We can enjoy what we did and move on from what we don't. I don't hate Van Halen cuz I wasn't into Post DLR, I just didn't pay much attention.

Go check out 'Pink Beatles in a Purple Zeppelin' from Arjen Lucassen's 'Lost in the New Real' album... he predicted a not too distant future where AI can create any blend of music you like, but although it sounds so right, it feels so wrong! I have a distict feeling that when the last Beatles die, there will be people 'making new Beatles music' by training an AI on their catalog. But of course that wouldn't really be authentic at all.

We pass the tracks back and forth so we can refine and adapt them as we create some really cool songs. I’m way more prolific than when I had to wait for four other people to be free at the same time as me.

I definetly agree with your statement that musician are human, they have good and bad days, they have pressures, high and low periods etc. One question that I ask myself as a bedroom guitarist is that I do want to write and share music perform at local bars/clubs and slowly make myself an audience, but how long can it last? How can I tell if I feel like I'm over it and I don't like it anymore? How can I make my next record more exciting and inspiring than the last one etc. Just really thought provoking questions that we all need to keep in mind sometimes, but not let it control us. Great video! 🤘

Considering the involvement of AI, it originally being from a rough demo John Lennon recorded in his house and George Harrison not having liked it back when Paul was considering the track for the Anthology series, i think this turned out quite well. I personally prefer the original demo as there is something about John's vulnerable vocals and piano that strikes a chord with me more than the more fuller produced version we got decades later but either way, i'm just happy it didn't turn into a disaster.

I'm listening to Eras: The Beatles on BBC sounds. It's a documentary telling the story of The Beatles using archive interviews. It's fantastic. One thing is clear. The death of Brian Epstein was a turning point. Mike's right about people who create music, art, movies and so on. We go through seasons of creativity. Sometimes it involves working with others. It's inevitable bands split up for that reason. Otherwise you end up with The Rolling Stones still touring; singing songs from the 1960s. One of the clips in the documentary was from either John or Paul saying they didn't want to sing "she loves you" continuously. That was after 4 years of touring. I understand that sentiment. I've done shorter tours with bands, living out of hotel rooms and a suitcase. It is fun for a while but it becomes exhausting. Mike hit the nail on the head to do with the well-being of a band. I wish everyone could be as considerate.

What they did is truly incredible. It was the closest anyone ever got to a perfect career. They wrote close to 300 songs in 7 and a half years, many of which are all time classics. They were the best in the pop world, as well as the alternative world. They incorporated an absurd amount of different genres and styles into their music and all of their songs are completely different from one another. It's astonishing. If the Beatles didn't exist in real life and someone made a fiction movie about a band exactly like the Beatles, people would say it's an unrealistic movie.

After watching this video, I think that the whole scenario with The Beatles can be summarized with a quote from Ian Brown that he said at the final Stone Roses gig on their reunion tour: "Don't be sad that it's over, be glad that it happened". As was said, it's sad when a band breaks up but it can be for the better if things aren't going in a way that works for them as people. There are times people have to be a bit selfish and think of themselves. It's better that they still love each other but not work together rather than keep going and have a such a falling out that they don't even go to the funerals of their former band members *cough cough* UB40 *cough cough*.

If John had lived, I bet they would have reunited, but they needed some space. John & Paul almost walked over to duet on SNL but got lazy Lol. I'm sure they would have gotten together at some point. Probably not full-time but I think that as people mellowed out with age, the baggage would get less heavy, and they would have eventually done something...maybe a show or two and maybe an album at some point. But yeah 1970 was time to split.

Absolutely! Fandumb tends to ruin everything with no regard for what it takes to create. An artist creates to fulfill their own highs of the process. Having one single fan is just a bonus. Ask other musicians, actors, directors, painters, etc. if they dwell on any particular work after its completion and they'll mostly say no. Many will say that it never or rarely feels complete at all... but they still serve as extended bastardized versions of what they were focused on at a time that is long gone by the time other people are consuming it. Put the nature of multiple people having their own perceptions and desires in the mix and any band is lucky to keep it up for even just a few years. These people don't owe fans anything, especially not an explanation for human nature being human nature.

John's association with Klein post Brian Epstein drove a dagger through the band. I'm not sure how they met and who linked them up but thankfully Paul wasn't fooled. And he carried that weight of saving the Beatles by suing them,really pulling the ole chestnut out of the fire. For decades he was the sole guy playing Beatles songs at his concerts, giving interviews and reconciling with Yoko. I'll give him kudos for this project and Giles Martin as well.

When it comes to bands using the internet to keep going, my band hasn't all been in the same room...ever. 2 at a time is even a rare moment. When "we" play live, it's just me as I'm the main singer and songwriter, so I just make some excuse for them not being there that ties into the lore of the band (we're supposed to be from the Planet Quagaar so it's usually sci-fi related). The rest of the band contributes as much as they feel like doing to our recordings. Sometimes that means they're on the majority of the album, sometimes it means they're only on 1 or 2 songs. It's just the way it works for us as a band. We all have pretty severe mental illnesses and each of us can be at different levels of functionality at any given time. Maybe one day, they'll finish an album that I'm not that involved in, but it's usually the other way around. If one of them sends me a half finished demo, I can chop it up and build a song around it. We're not famous, our albums don't sell (we even have albums called "Moldy" and "Even Moldier" because our albums don't go gold but they do go moldy), but we're working on our 10th studio album right now which will be released in January. We do it because we enjoy doing it and there are maybe 50ish other people in the world that seem to get a kick out of what we do. We're 3 very different people, linked by a shared passion for music.

And sure, those first couple records of each solo career has some absolute classics and would have loved to hear them as Beatles tracks but.....eh? To me, it seems most bands that were cool and groundbreaking in the 60s ended up prettu lame in the late 70s into the 80s if they were stilll around. The Beatles have a GOLD discography. And that make me happy.

It seems odd to me that people would find this so controversial. They split up. They had their reasons. That's it. With the release of Now and Then, I remarked, in a number of places, on and offline, "Anyone would think that The Beatles didn't split up over half-a-century ago." (I was just short of my 1st birthday at the time. I'm 54 now.) This upsets and infuriates people. Strange. N.B. I love The Beatles.
@frankhainke7442
@frankhainke7442 Жыл бұрын
The good thing in splitting was that from there on it was impossible to be the number one in rock and pop because there emerged more kinds of rock and pop. They probably would have made good music, but they would not have been to main act of those days. So there would have come a comparison in their quality and importance with their achievements in the sixties. So it was the right time to split. And it was good that they had not the chance to do something absolutely new in 1995. It would have been impossible to do something singular again. So they did something that can be seen as a last wind that comes along from the old days. And in that department it was good. Not too much was expected. And so I see the last songs as a farewell by a band that is not a band of our time.

As for The Beatles staying together, I agree that it was probably the right decision. If you look at their piers, a lot of them struggled to live up to what they'd done in the past as time went on. The Kinks and The Rolling Stones both made great albums after the 60s, but they also made some lesser albums too. This way, The Beatles went out having never made something as awful as Black And Blue. As much as the friendships between band members were mended over time, there was always going to be old tensions there. George and Paul weren't always on the same page during the reunion sessions. This is part of the reason why Now And Then was only just finished now, George thought the song was rubbish but Paul thought it wasn't so it was always in the back of his mind to finish it. Personally, I think George was right. One thing I do need to correct you on though is that George Martin didn't die until fairly recently. He outlived both John and George. The reason he didn't take part in the 1995 reunion was because he was losing his hearing and felt he couldn't do what he used to do anymore. Their manager, Brian Epstein, did die in 1967 between the release of Sgt. Pepper and the making of Magical Mystery Tour. George Martin was involved in the Love album and the 2009 remasters with a little help from his son, Giles, who co-produced the new song and has been responsible for the remixing of Beatles albums in recent years.

My personal perception is that the breakup of The Beatles was multipronged, based on these factors: 1. The Lennon-McCartney writing partnership dominating the group dynamics from the beginning and preventing Harrison from getting more of his songs onto albums. Lennon-McCartney were the core relationship, with Harrison added and kept on as a 'junior member' and Ringo added in last of all as the necessary missing piece. Ringo's writing aspirations were less than George's, and George felt stifled. 2. The death/absence of Brian Epstein leading to The Beatles managing themselves and to a loss of leadership which role Paul stepped into in order to 'keep the machine going.' 3. The concurrent shift from mainly being a PERFORMING act to mainly being a RECORDING act. Paul's perfectionism-I'm one too myself-and workaholism led to him as a COMPOSER to want Guitar solos on his song recordings to be a certain way (much like an orchestra conductor requires the players to help create his/her interpretation of a piece by fulfilling performance details in their parts upon request) whereas in a LIVE PERFORMING situation a rock and roll band's roles are more 'democratic' and so the Lead Guitar player (George) would normally be left to create or improvise his own solos as 'master of his domain.' Becoming primarily a recording band put Paul as a writer in a supervisory role of his own songs that was more like a conductor's role, and that stepped on George's toes because his role was still primarily that of a PERFORMER accustomed to the usual leeway of a Lead Guitarist himself choosing what to play for solos. 4. The added stress of trying to manage themselves, create/run Apple, and ultimately work out where the money goes. The Allan Klein debacle was a wedge driven squarely in between them. Money matters decided amid struggles over the group business situation where all of their individual interests were at stake was BOUND to create interpersonal frictions among them.

All three of the post John Beatles songs are boring AOR AM radio music. Why can't we get a good hard rocking song like I Saw Her Standing There or Helter Skelter? That being said, they need to go back and remix Free as a Bird and Real Love using the AI to remove the piano from John's vocal track. Free as a Bird would benefit because the vocal wouldn't sound all thin from trying to EQ the piano out. The surround mixes of these songs on the Beatles Anthology videos make the piano issue more obvious by putting John's vocal in the center channel by themself, and whenever he isn't singing the piano drops out. AI would fix this

Similar to David Bowie, what if he knows he doesn't have long to go and so he wants to go out with a bang. He didn't want to leave this unfinished. This is just speculation based on friends talking in a pub over a few beers so it's probably nothing.

He's on tour right now doing nearly three hour shows. Looks pretty healthy so I doubt it (hope not anyway). So if there are any health issues they would have to be in their very early stagers.

I mean…it’s fine. Maybe it’s the way it was put together, but I just didn’t feel the same magic that you get from the old material. Maybe it’s better to just let it lie and celebrate what the 4 of them were able to create…together.

I wanted to hate this situation so much...its weird but i think its not as bad as i thought,in the end it makes some new fans happy wich is probably what all artists want,even if lennon didnt want to be in the Beatles anymore,i think they would have reunited full time in the 90s

I think they shouldve just took the Wu Tang Clan route. Inspite of wu tang not being an individual unit right now. They never broke up. Wu Tang Forever. They had their own internal strife given there was 9+ members and RZA couldnt make beats for everyone. They still signed a contract which allowed them to be their own thing and release their own albums individually and collab with anyone. They had total freedom but they were still and still are under the singular banner, Wu Tang. Maybe this type of contract just didnt exist at the time and Wu Tng migjtve fought for it themselves. Too many people especially now a days let the lightning of the bottle way too quickly.

I loved Free as a Bird and Real Love. The three reimaging lads did a wonderful job on both. Now and Then is a nice song, but putting in guitar riffs from a long dead Beatle (George) does not making it a "new" Beatles song. Still - a nice song. But not one I will listen to that often, unless I am going through the entire Beatles calalog all the way through to Now and Then.

I think you met to say after Brain Epstein died, not George Martin. As something of an artist myself, I don't like being told what to make, when to make, how to make, etc. I return this in kind to the artists I know, either indirectly or directly. And as someone who listens to music, I can like or dislike something. But even if I don't like something, I will respect it. Finally, I can understand the end means that. What comes afterward under the old name is more like an epilogue. So as a Pink Floyd fan: The Final Cut was released in 1983, Roger Waters left Pink Floyd in 1985 with the intent of having Pink Floyd end right there ... then that got complicated when David Gilmour and Nick Mason wanted to continue as Pink Floyd. They all performed together as a four-piece what ended up being one last time in 2005 for Live 8. Personally, I think that is the proper denouement for the band. Everything else afterward is an epilogue. Rock on \m/

The last Beatles song is the last recorded song on Abbey Road. This is ridiculous. And the song sucks. Compare it to Strawberry Fields or Nowhere Man. John obviously didn't pick it for his last album. Paul's just trying to profit off his dead bandmates.
