I don’t totally agree with the Megadeth take. I get that Symphony of Destruction is their most popular song, but Holy Wars is generally considered their best/most iconic, and at least within metal circles I would say it’s the more highly regarded song. It’s like comparing Enter Sandman to Master of Puppets or Fade to Black for Metallica. Sure Sandman is their most popular and made them a household name, but is it their greatest or most influential track? There are arguments for sure, but my point being like Puppets, I think Holy Wars was the correct choice.

So, I have a few thoughts. I think Cemetery Gates is the choice for Pantera. As much as I could go the rest of my life without ever hearing that song again, it had the widest appeal. Even normies that only got their rock from daytime rock radio knew and loved Cemetery Gates, and I do think it does capture the old school ballad format, while introducing the groove metal future we were facing, better than any other song. I think Walk eventually transcended itself, but initially, it was not widely known. Yes metal fans were aware of it, but beyond that, it really wasn't until the 2000s where people who didn't even listen to metal became aware of it. As far as AC/DC being metal, I agree. I'm not one of those people who says, they used to be metal but they aren't anymore. That's a load of crap, in my opinion. There's room for everyone, and I remember when AC/DC released Who Made Who and Razor's Edge and they were widely considered metal. Same with Motley Crue, Ratt, and Quiet Riot. Those were the bands that put metal on the map in a commercial sense. If they were considered metal back then, they should be considered metal now. I don't care how many Lorna Shores or Slaughter to Prevails come out. They are driving on the paved roads that AC/DC, Quiet Riot, and Motley Crue cleared a path for.

Angel of death has the blood-curdling scream in the beginning, the double bass drum break at the end, iconic lyrics (can you name me any lyrics as iconic on Raining Blood as: "Auschwitz, the meaning of pain"?), the great riff in the middle section.. Raining Blood is a great song but I don't think it holds a candle to Angel of Death, which is the perfect metal song - No. 1 on my list.
@padmakshkhandelwal18325 ай бұрын
Nahh, I totally disagree. Raining Blood is the perfect metal song and Angel Of Death is the one that holds no candle to it. Lyrics you are saying? The least important thing in metal songs, anyway here you go: Raining Blood!!! From a lacerating sky Bleeding it's horror Creating my structure Now I shall Reign In Blood! Raining Blood has everything to the absolute peak a metal song needs: Eerie, disconcerting atmospheric intro with the blood rain and those "Duh Duh Duh". Anticipation to the max and overdrives into the most legendary evil, downright terrifyingly jaw-dropping awesome metal guitar riff ever. And then racing on to the single greatest headbang section in all of music with those lightning fast gallops. It already beats Angel Of Death with this much, but we have just begun. Onto one of the fastest and craziest riffs you will hear anywhere going into the verses, guitars roaring behind. At the end of each verse they give that deathly closure with that monstrous guitar lick and "Dundundundundundun DADUN". Recalling the intro and slowing down into one of the greatest breakdowns ever, building onto it with a classic eerie Slayer harmony on top. Rushing back one last time for the given last verse, concluding the entire song and album with it, guitars just ready to explode and they just do with the drums together unleashing the eternal mayhem of hell with those guitar screams and sheer speed. Final release into the blood rain for the last to circle everything for last. Perfection, metal songwriting at an untouchable peak, masterpiece in every right. I rest my case.

Reason why I think Angel of Death made the list? It's one of their most controversial songs, due to the subject matter. So much so that they were told by their label Geffen to take the song off the album. They refused and were prompty booted off the label, eventually signing with Rick Rubin's Def American label and releasing the album there. It's a cool song, but I would have probably put something like War Ensemble or the title track off Seasons in the Abyss on the list instead. Just because those were the two songs (and album) that got me into them. Also, totally agree with your take on Holy Wars. I dig the song for sure, but I definitely would have put either Tornado of Souls or Symphony of Destruction on the list instead. For the exact same reasons you mentioned. I would have even been cool if something like Hangar 18 or the title track off the Peace Sells album made it on the list as well. Hangar because of the crazy lead guitar duelling between Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman, and Peace Sells because that bass riff that kicks it off is sick. I think even MTV used part of it for an intro to one of their shows at one point. That's how good it is, really. As always, killer video. Can't wait for the next one. Cheers..

Judas Priest - Victim of Changes (Most would say Painkiller, but Victim of Changes is THE defining Priest song, this song isn't a heavy metal song, this song is Heavy Metal itself) 4. Metallica - Master of Puppets 5. Rainbow - Stargazer 6. Deep Purple - Highway Star (I don't care that people call this hard rock, this is clearly early heavy metal to me, just like 70s Sabbath is metal, lots of Deep Purple is too) 7. Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train 8. Dio - Holy Diver 9. Saxon - Princess of the Night 10. Motörhead - Ace of Spades or Overkill (Personally not a fan of the Motörhead sound, but they're a legendary band with a legendary legacy) Some Extras honorable mentions: -Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction (Personally I really don't like Megadeth at all really) -Helloween - A Tale That Wasn't Right -Rush - 2112 (I get a lot don't consider this metal, but 70s Rush was really heavy & bluesy, and is definetely metal to me) -Queensrÿche - Queen of the Reich & Eyes of a Stranger -Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King

I agree with the band Black Sabbath. I get where they were coming from choosing the song Black Sabbath, but there are other Black Sabbath songs that were more awesome and some more popular songs. So either way of measuring, there are better choices. I would say for popularity, Iron Man would have been a far more popular song. Better song as far as metal goes? This is a great video. I agree on almost everything. I have to disagree on Black Sabbath somewhat. Obviously this is simply a matter of taste, so not saying you are wrong for not liking it or thinking it doesn't belong on the list. I get it is simple. There are more involved songs they could have chosen, and songs with greater melodic sensibility for sure from the band. The first part is just three notes basically, mixed up a bit with power chords and slight variations. But it really changed the face of music, and even when I first heard it about twenty years after it came out, it had such a massive impact on me. It is about the power the song has. It is a bit like the song rumble in that respect. On paper, it isn't that impressive. When I play it myself on guitar, it doesn't even sound like much. But the way that song songs on that record, with Ozzy's voice. And that second riff in the song when it speeds up is quite great. That is one of my favorite metal riffs of all time. Simple but great. I would also say I think that second riff is somewhat foundational to metal. When I first heard the song black sabbath, I was like "This is everything I want metal to be" (which was striking as I had been listening to metal for a while before I heard it, so it stood out even among the newer metal I had been listening to). That said, I agree with your other choices. War Pigs and Paranoid are the two that would easily fit into that slot.

It’s like if you asked a Metallica fan which their greatest song was, they would be more likely to say master of puppets, than Enter Sandman, even though that was what put them on the map. Same with Hallowed be my name, instead of the Trooper or Number of the Beast.

That's an interesting pov. I get what you're saying. I'm not sure that's a broad enough scope? But I think I get why you'd think that.

Trying to argue that Enter Sandman put them on the map is genuinely so insulting not only to the band, but especially to Cliff Burton and Master of Puppets. God this comment section is full of reductive or just really bad takes.

@@kellygraves4189 Well, The Black Album isn’t what let gave them their break, but it’s definitely what made them the largest metal band in the world. I never said that the black album was better, just more popular, and I don’t think that that is disrespectful to his memory. I never said that his work was worse, just less widely known. Fans, as I said, usually appreciate Master of Puppets more (and for good reason, if I may ad).

Dumpster Diver was good❤ This is the most I've ever hear Mike complement Ozzy. I like Slayer, I HATE 'Angel of Death' specifically because there is a list that list it as having one of the greatest drum solo's of all time, when t barely has a drum solo.

Always thought "Metal Meltdown" was WAY cooler than "Painkiller". Same for "Sacred Heart" by Dio, as opposed to "Holy Diver". But hey, I get it, normies gonna norm. I just cannot listen to only the same 4 or 5 songs by a band/artist over and over like most people, I'm not that easily amused.

Holy wars is better than master of puppets

I personally think Holy Wars was the perfect pick for Megadeth. Symphony of Destruction feels like Megadeth’s “Enter Sandman”. And as a guitarist, yes Tornado of Souls seems like the perfect choice, but it wasn’t nearly as widely known as Holy Wars. Black Sabbath as the Black Sabbath pick was horrible. War Pigs any day of the week (or possibly paranoid). Also you should check out robs live performances of Painkiller. You’re right, he’s known for his high pitch screams, but man when he wants to he has a nasty growl 🤘🤘

I'm so glad music is always subjective and never objective. I would not have put any of these songs in the top ten. It's never a popularity contest for me. It's my favorite Metal songs...period. That's why these lists never work. And this list is shit. But remember...subjective.

WatchMojo actually made a good heavy metal list? Must be a sign of the apocalypse 😁

Honestly it would be way more accurate to have some of the bottom 20 be occupied by some more modern tracks like blind by korn, Chop suey by soad, hell even a linkin park song would be more fitting than a bunch of the bullshit in the other 20 spots. On top of picking the wrong disturbed song they also picked imo the wrong dream theater and twisted sister songs.

Fully agree they should have had more modern metal if they were considering "Heavy Metal" as a meta genre, and not a "classic" genre. I wasn't upset with their pick for DT, but I think Metropolis would probably be a better choice for staying power and relevance to their overall sound. How they picked that track for Twisted Sister is beyond me lmao
