Luxury beliefs are an elite instrument to distinguish themselves. If you want to be part of the club, you have to suspend your disbelief of, for example, men being able to transform into women. 'I can't tell you what a woman is; I'm not a biologist' -high priest Jackson

I think that it is an important part of a luxury belief that it inflict cost on a lower class and this is how it is luxurious: the piores cannot believe in these things, because they cannot pay for these things, like electric cars, expensive oil, organic food and so on. Thank you very much!
@MattFoleysGhost Жыл бұрын
I don’t - Never attribute malice to what can be explained with sheer stupidity or ignorance. It’s not that rich people want a cost inflicted on poors, it’s that they don’t care. The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference. Poors are far more aware of what it looks like to be rich than the rich understand what it looks and feels like to be poor.

I quite like Rob’s basic conceptual framework here but he could do a better job at describing what he considers to be the “upper classes” & “lower classes.” Veblen (who Henderson likes to quote) was focussed primarily on the economic distinctions between the ordinary working class & Fat cat robber Barton’s. Henderson seems to be focusing more on hybridized economic-cultural elites.

He once mentioned that a classmate spouted off that all families are equal. Further questioning revealed that she had been raised by her own married biological mother and father and planned on doing the same in her own life.
@PhillipMelanchthon4 ай бұрын
Examples of luxury beliefs: 1. Progressives wishing to "de-fund the police" knowing that they will be safe in their exclusive neighborhoods and that they can afford private security measures. 2. Promoting alternative family structures and pretending to reject marriage as outdated and patriarchal, while in their own family life they adhere to long-term monogamous marriages. 3. Promoting laws mandating electric-only vehicles, knowing that they can afford the extra expense and can mitigate the inconvenience those vehicles represent to working families. 4. Supporting environmental policy that draws down reservoirs and replaces natural gas-fired power plants, knowing that they can afford the resulting rise in water and electric bills. 5. Embracing the concept of 'white privilege' which actually carries the least cost for affluent whites, while conferring the greatest burden on poor whites who are denied college entry or employment. 6. Advocating for "Healthy at every size" and diminishing other health risks while the affluent represent the thinnest and most active portion of the population with the greatest access to health care.
@PhillipMelanchthon4 ай бұрын
7. Advocating for "responsibly sourced" products, such as coffee or cooking oil, knowing that these products are 10 times as expensive as their common alternatives. Promulgating campaigns against coconut oil and palm oil for supposed environmental reasons, for example. 8. After having exploited their own resources to achieve wealth and build their own mansions, denying others in developing countries the opportunity to do the same.
