Sienkiewicz and Liefeld shouldn't be compared in any way they both had unusual styles? Sienkiewicz can actually draw

Not a weird take at all. Sienkiewicz is a master of his craft and can draw in almost any style from hyper realism to abstract. He’s objectively superior. On top of that he’s an awesome dude to meet in person. Saying Liefeld has an “unusual style” is like saying my wife’s burnt brownies are just an “unusual baking technique”.

After 33 years of giving us some of the wildest and most iconic comic book moments, he’s choosing to step back while he's still got the magic. Respect for knowing when to bow out on a high note rather than just keep going for the sake of it. This is how legends do it-leave ‘em wanting more! 🙌 Who else thinks Rob deserves a standing ovation for going out on top? #MicDrop #DeadpoolForever #RespectTheArt" .

On his podcasts recently he has elaborated a bit more. Age is catching up to him and after doing thousands of pages over his career, it has taken a toll on him. Of the original image 7, the others gave up consistent interior pages years / decades ago (bar Eric Larson - Savage Dragon). Rob promotes his work. If he believes it is his last Deadpool work, he is going to promote it as such. You've done a video talking about it, you are doing some free marketing for him.

Rob has never been the best businessman. He would've been much richer if he didn't pay his collaborators such ridiculous amounts of money (he famously paid Alan Moore $40,000 per issue for his Extreme work, which amounted to at least a couple of million dollars over 2 or 3 years).

He might be dealing with carpal tunnel in the wrist he uses to draw, can happen to anybody that keeps their hands and wrists very busy for prolonged periods of time. Even with all the problems with his style, I take him over any poser and hack who destroyed Marvel and DC in the past years. He loves comics, has a passion for the craft, and is always enthusiastic about his works. Also, comics are paying peanuts nowadays. He makes more money not working for Marvel than doing anything for them. Same for DC.

@jackhole1979
@jackhole1979 28 күн бұрын
I know nothing about Rob Liefeld's monetary status, but I think you're greatly overestimating his net worth. It's hard to know every creator's contract deals, but I don't believe that Marvel started giving residuals for characters created until after Image was founded and they were in a death spiral of talent that was vacating Marvel in the mid-90's. Could be wrong on that, but both Jim Starlin (notably creator of Thanos) and Ed Brubaker (writer of the Winter Soldier story arc) have talked to anyone that will listen about how poor the payments were from Disney despite their contributions to successful movies. Rob may have been able to cut out a side deal with Fox, but considering how stingy Fox was with the first Deadpool movie, that seems questionable. As for his Image work, while the money did flow in at the beginning of the Image days, the constant lateness of books as well as his own ego (and getting kicked our of the Image partnership) put a severe strain on finances. They did really well to begin with, but like most young adults, when sudden success fell upon Rob, there's a ton of stories out there that he (and Rob was not alone in this behavior) really lost focus and making large purchases while also letting his work habits suffer, causing books to ship months late which helped to accelerate the comic's implosion of the mid-90's. And due to partnerships (and needing funding) after he left Image, he's actually lost the publishing and ownership rights of a bunch of his creations (namely Youngblood - hence why his team-up with LooseCollector to create action figures has such heavy hitters as Cabbot from BloodStrike and BloodWulf). He also doesn't have any Tradepaperbacks of the comics he does still retain the rights to, so there's a pretty good chance that he hasn't been getting a ton of passive income from the characters he did create at Image/Extreme that he still owns the rights to (at current, I'd say the most valuable of the characters he still owns would be either Prophet or Avengelyne. If anything, I would figure that his current work with Marvel has mostly been about filling his bank account while re-introducing his name to the current audience, and if I had to hazard a guess, I'll bet he also has a piece or any characters he did create on this go-around (Major X). The reason he's finishing up his Marvel stuff is because he see's that he's got about 5 years left of work to get his finances in order. Working at Marvel will fill the bank account, but creating his publishing company and creating new characters/re-introducing characters he owns will increase the value of his IPs, and with any luck he'll be able to create something self-sustaning that will carry him into retirement, where he'll be able to get an artist to draw the comics he writes (or brings in writers as well, but again, all for characters he owns). To be completely clear, I could be wrong about absolutely everything in this post, but looking back at the studios he's run, the length of time he took off away from the business (mid-2000's to late 2010's, or at least was not at the forefront of the business), the fractured nature of the characters he created, his return to Marvel and subsequent decision to focus on characters he has control over, I think it's a pretty good guess. TLDR: Rob's net worth is likely overestimated, he has less ownership/publishing rights of characters that he created than some people think, and he's likely looking at his future retirement and trying to make as much hay (and as many IPs) as he can while the sun is shining.
