In fairness. these guys train primarily for resilience and endurance.. Gaelic sports are lung buster games. where NFL is primarily explosive fitness based. Catching is bread n butter to Gaa players.

Alot of these exercises are based on explosive power which wouldn't be as relevant in GAA due to it being a continuous sport, so the players likely sacrifice some explosive power for endurance

I doubt that was 120 kg's on the bench, probably 120 lbs. Americans haven't gone metric as far as I know. So that's about 50 kg's. Still good reps for 50 kg's if you are not a regular bench presser. But many of these lads are probably gym users, so bench pressing wouldn't be unfamiliar to them.

Amateurism is a funny concept... rugby union claimed itself to be amateur for over a century, however, “payments” were made by other means such as you’d get a “job” in a bar or become a lawyer or doctor for a connected firm or practice. It was the social connections that mattered for this amateurism ... the same goes for GAA. The Gaelic Footballers are the superstars of their local communities

Its amazing how a sport like this is only popular in its country, and a small country it is, but the crowds these matches get are insane!

@@RobReacts1 so true!! I’m an American and I was only made aware of the GAA in 2001 when I dated an Irish girl. I became an instant fan of the game... so much so that I started to lose interest in the American sports that I grew up with (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL...). We have a local GAA comp in Boston. The crowds are great, the action a delight and the food and beer exceptional! It really is a great sport and culture to belong to. I hope you get a chance to experience a live GAA Game.

Interesting but a very static test, American football players have to play under all sorts of weather conditions, blistering heat freezing temp rain snow. There is also those long throws and catches, and brutal tackles, not to mention all the plays the players have to train for. Also comparing NLF to amateur is fair you can compare college football to the NFL and college is amateur, and you see some amazing plays in college football. Now I'm waiting for them to pick up a baseball bat and try to hit a 95mph fastball whizzing by their face.
@TheGiff73 жыл бұрын
If those guys have hurling experience they will be well used to fast balls at close quarters as well as catching them in full flight.

Look up the "toughest trade" a programme where GAA players both Hurling and football swap with professionals in other sports including baseball and American football.
