Personally I can't drive, but I've never really had any problems getting where I want to go in Brissie (Brisbane). I'm originally from there from birth until I was 13, moving to The Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland. It's up a mountain range behind Cairns, being a country area there's not much by way of public transportation. If there's no other option than for me to go shopping in a town about a 15 minute drive away, I'll be calling for a taxi. I'd describe myself as a partly city and country girl. I call my visit back to Brissie ideally every one or two years a "Sanity Trip". Due to Covid I had to stay put and it was definitely getting to me. A week or so in Brissie and I'm quite happy to go back home. I was definitely quite tense prior to my sanity trip last September, even planning for it helped. I usually travel to Brissie by train, if I go directly to the city I can feel myself beginning to relax. Plus if you've arrived by travel trains, you can travel on a city train to your final destination for free. We already have electric trains, I'm glad there'll soon be electric buses. Between the buses, trains and walking it's pretty easy to get around.

I've lived in Brisbane ~25 years now, you noted with the first few projects that they are not far away not like 10 years away, but most of them were started 8-10 years ago, and we've been putting up with the interruptions they've been causing (road closures, bridge closures, etc). You were concerned about the green space under the motorway, I've walked the north bank pedestrian/cycle way that ran under the motorway where this green space will be added (it seems to be being added over the water), It's not as noisy under the motorway as you'd expect, and can be quite nice to sit down there to eat your lunch by the river when you work in the city. I'm more concerned about all the extra office space being built when there is already so much empty office space that several entire office buildings were converted to apartments as they couldn't find tenants for the offices, and that was before C19, can't imagine it's any better now with more people working from home (like me).

The public transport in Brisbane and beyond is great, I have travelled from Landsborough to Gold Cost and within the city all on public transport. I stayed 5 minutes walk from the Queens Wharf development and the traffic noise wasn't an issue, great views over the botanical gardens over to kangaroo point. There is a recreational area opposite this new development at south bank so the people of Brisbane I suspect won't have a problem relaxing in the new recreational area.

@Rob The 'motorway' is the Captain Cook Bridge/ Pacific Motorway/ Riverside Expressway and was built in the early 1970s so it is an existing structure that has to be designed around. Back in the 1970s they didn't foresee the requirements for 50 years in the future.

I really like most of these ideas as well as a few others that were not included in this video (STH Bank expansion for example) the 1,500 seat theatre is an extension of QPAC which already houses 2 similar sized theatres so I don’t see the need of bigger. The GABBA at 50k capacity is a joke, as a frequent attendee to both AFL and Cricket there, not making it much bigger 65-70k capacity would be much better (not to mention that BBL, International Cricket and Brisbane Lions will now be homeless for 5 years in Brisbane) and old mates suggestion of building it over the GABBA station solves both these. Once new stadium is built, knock the old one down and utilise the space for whatever modern need we have in 10-12 years time 2-3k from the CBD. Would love to see a pedestrian bridge from Bulimba to Tenerife, a car bridge linking Apollo rd, Bulimba to racecourse rd/Kingsford Smith Drive, Hamilton and an extension of the riverwalk.
@frank4792 Жыл бұрын
1,500 seats doesn't sound much but combined in the same building id The Lyric Theater which holds about 2000 seats (very few shows are sold out completely), the concert hall with 1600 seats the Cremorne Theater (can be converted from traditional proscenium to theatre-in-the-round, concert, cabaret, cinema or flat floor modes) holds around 200 seats and the Playhouse Theater 850, So another theater with 1500 seats is more than enough, no point of staging shows to a half empty theater.

What are you talking about? You can travel from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast by train and the bus and train service around Brisbane is good compared to Sydney. My friend on Bribie Island often goes to concerts in the city and medical appointments at RBH. She catches the train at Caboolture and is in the city in an hour. As for Brisbane airport, there is a direct train service to the terminals from Roma Street and Central and it links with Gold Coast Airport. I grew up on the north side, Aspley, and went to school on the edge of the CBD, the bus service was easy to use.

I don't want to mention the politics but here we go, being a Brisbane resident, that just last week on the news, there is a State election next year, the current Government is expecting the Federal Govt to foot half of the bill (or near enough to it) for the Gabba redevelopment and area, if approved, if not approved just a remodel of the stadium. The opposition have not approved or support any of this spending but that's politics for you so I guess we'll just watch this space. I don't know about any other projects that's the only thing the opposition leader spoke about on the news during the week. You're right though, there are 2 main roads that literally hug the stadium so that would be a lot of inconvenience for everyone just for the Olympics, which if you ask me, can just efff off. A lot of investment for a short term gain with long term pain for the residents.

They want to spend $2B on a sports park (GABBA) that is only used a few times a years or hold a two week sports (Olympics) while the regional areas that provide a LOT of taxes and royalalties to the government lose out on medical facilities and critical services nor can they find a few $$$s to fix up Queensland tourist islands that have been in ruins for over a decade. My biggest complaint is the name: Queen's Wharf. Why name a major redevelopment of our great city after a foreign born, unelected head of state? If construction companies had there way, they would concrete the lot and cut out the green places in the whole of Australia. When the government makes one project for business it takes away from another area they are just a fatality of progress. The motorway is built out over the river like that because the 1976 floods washed away the existing road way. So, without having to reclaim a lot of space in the city to rebuild it, they chose to build it out over the river. The centenary bike way (which already runs under the motorway) is disgusting. It's dirty, and you have the feeling you're going to come across a junkie shooting up at any time. Anything to make that space more pleasant is a plus. And I can tell you from previous experience, the noise from the motorway is nowhere near as bad as you'd expect.

@Dave Cheffie - Wrong. As said by M O'N, the Captain Cook Bridge and the Riverside Expressway were built in 1972 and opened to traffic in March 1973. The floods were in January 1974, Australia Day long weekend. I was working in the CBD at the time and came out of the Belfast Tavern on Friday night at closing time (10 pm) and thought ... oooh, rain's a bit heavy. I was the last car over Enoggera Creek on Kelvin Grove Road. Nothing was washed away in that part of the city as North Quay and George Street are well above the water level. Water did enter the city because the stormwater drains backed up but that only affected the low-lying parts below Charlotte Street down to the old Botanic Gardens.

The riverside expressway and Captain Cook bridge were already almost fully complete by the 1974 floods (not 1976). The expressway and Southeast freeway were the result of part of the Wilbur Smith plan. (There was also a planned northern arm that was never built.) Smith was an American traffic engineer contracted by the Nicklin Liberal/Country Party coalition state government in the late 1950s to solve Brisbane’s growing traffic congestion. The reason for an expressway on the river was that it was far cheaper to do this than to purchase expensive city blocks, having to demolish buildings.

I have lived in Brisbane for nearly 60 years and cannot get over this obsession with being the new big thing. Brisbane is fine as it is. However.. some myths according to the boorish Melbourne and Sydney wankers who troll these videos. Brisbane has no arts culture. QPAC is the largest performing arts complex in the Southern Hemisphere with a combined audience space of 4,930. That is just one complex. There are at least another dozen performance spaces across the region: QTC at West End, Judith Wright centre in the Valley, Twelfth Night, La Boite, Brisbane Entertainment centre, blah, blah... Brisbane has no food culture. I absolutely challenge anyone to name a cuisine that you can get in Melbourne that you cannot find in Brisbane. Test me on this one please! Brisbane stadiums are small. Fine... I'm completely happy with my penis size and don't need a bigger paddock to compensate. Sydney Harbour is magnificent. Yes, it is! I agree 100%.... But virtually none of the haters have been to the amazing islands that enclose Moreton Bay. K'Gari (Fraser Island), Moreton Island and Even Bribie Island. And all of this is closer to Noosa and the Gold Coast than Parramatta is to Bondi. It's not a race Brisbane... just relax and take in the sunshine!
