Sepak signifies "KICK" in Malay (Malaysia) and Takraw signifies "WOVEN BALL" in Thai (Thailand). Sepak Takraw now is part of medal event in Asian Games (Asiad) since Beijing 1990.

This game has been recorded to have been played by folks in Malaysia (known as Tanah Melayu before) since the 15th Century. It was called Sepak Raga then. There was no net involved at that time. The Thai people intoduced the net (Takraw in thai language), so it became Sepak Takraw. Sepak means kick in Malay language.

This sport is at least 5 centuries old. Modern Volleyball is much much younger, only late 19th century. So Sepak should not be described as "kick volleyball" unfortunately. But rather that volleyball should be described as "hand Sepak Tekraw".

2bf sepak-takraw in 16th century looks nothing like this, it's just peoples kick takraw in circle but modern sepak-takraw which play in court and use net with rule like volleyball just invented in 1920s Thailand. So saying sepak-takraw is kick volleyball isn't completely wrong.

That is fair enough, but sometimes saying that Sepak is a form of volleyball makes some people think that it fully coped volleyball, when it did not & makes people think that it is a younger sport than volleyball. I'm sure it got some of its play from volleyball. I was wanting to give this sport its historical "dues" in that it did not fully copy any other sport played today. But I am happy to hear some news media saying that it is ancient & centuries old, so that helps. There is a newer sport that is catching some attention call TeqBall, which is similar but uses a table. However I've seen it played & the action & athleticism used is very tame & slow compared to Sepak.

The game originates in the south east asia only played in Malaysia, singapore, thailand brubei and indonesia. But some years ago the game is included in the SEA Games sports events and now it is accepted by ASEAN nations as a competitive sports game.

We play that in the Philippines too and even have school teams competing. It's also considered as one of our national sports, considering that we share the same culture with Malaysia and Indonesia.

Philippines played it since ancient times as well after it was introduced to us by Malay and other south east asian neighbors through maritime trade tho were not as good as it compared to our Thai and Malay brothers HAHAHAH

If you have any street court football experience and are comfortable handling a ball with your foot... you can translate that to takraw. You are watching the best of the best in this video. Don't get discouraged. Try it for yourself. (with experienced players, not your kids) . You'll be surprised how natural it feels. When everyone one around you plays this game, you don't think of it. You just play. I started playing takraw just out of boredom. And while playing, in the moment, most of the moves you see become normal. The ball hurts if you're standing still. But when playing, it does not hurt. I have no idea how I can stretch so high or flip and land with ease while playing takraw. I can't split otherwise. There's something magical about this game. It allow us to push our "inner monkey" further.

You got to try it. You don't have to do that kind of serve & spike on your first try. When you get the hang of it then maybe you can train to do that acrobatic things.

@@RobReacts1 It's popular in Southeast Asia but other Asian nations are also picking up the sports since its introduction into the Asian Games. Thailand (my country) and Malaysia are the No.1 and 2 in Sepak Takraw.

4:27 the precursor to Sepak Takraw, Sepak Raga has existed at least 500 years old, perhaps maybe a thousand years old, older than Thailand itself. Oldest recorded history put it at 500 years old.

It is Southeast Asian sport, play in SEA Games before it included in Asisn Games. The original ball was made out of rattan moderm one is made out of plastic because it is difficult to standardize rattan ball size, hardness and the way they bounce. There are other type/style/sport of kicking Takraw, in Thailand (and I believe the were play in other country too). First one is "ตะกร้อวง" (Takraw wong, "wong" mean circle), this one kind of scoring by showing kicking tricks. The other is "ตะกร้อลอดห่วง" (Takraw lord huang, "huang" mean hoop) each team try to kick takraw through a hoop which hanging high in the air at the center of the circle. Both are not as fast pace as Sepak though.

@@RobReacts1 I forgot to mention that the game I saw was played on a beach volleyball court with the net at the regular height for volleyball. Completely insane. Also I just came across 2 videos you may like one is a Rugby Ref admitting he got a call wrong, which is almost unheard of in any sport. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3TJeZ2seq98jsk And this one is about a rule in AFL which has the harshest penalty probably in all of sports. the origins is blurred but there is old written documents that suggest where it came from. there was no malaysia and thailand in the old kingdom. what we know as malaysia and thailand nowadays, long long ago was a same domain territory or kingdom. like the kingdom of langkasuka, situated at upper malaysia and south thailand nowadays. so malaysia and thailand claim this sport are theirs. but to be diplomatic, we agree to compromise by naming this sport sepak takraw where sepak came from malaysian origin which mean kick, and takraw from thailand origin which mean ball. the literal meaning is kick ball.
