I was initially a little confused, especially while watching and reading Fill #2. The last left, before the right crash, is played on the high tom but the notation showed it played on the floor tom. I finally noticed that it was written to be played on a 4 piece kit. Very cool exercises. Thanks for all your great videos

Rob very nice lesson. I really like the way you really slow down each of the fills in parts of the video then go for faster tempo. Many to most KZbin teachers start out too fast and say "ok I will slow it down" but it is still way too fast to learn easily. Keep up the great work. Bill.

Started on drums and eventually drifted away from them a bit to focus on guitar and keys, but I’ll be damned if your vids don’t remind me why the skins will always have my heart 🫶

I think on the second exercise if the second to last note was on the snare instead of the tom, then cymbal it would sound cool. Great lesson and will try them all because they are great lessons to start with left hand like Bonham.

Rob-I’ve been playing for over 40 years and these basic fills still get me excited to try new things. I’m a left hand lead drummer on a right handed kit, like Carter Beauford. I constantly struggle with the decision to lead right or lead left. When I was started playing I was self taught, and leading with the left hand was my only option. Now that I can play both ways, I still struggle on my lead when things get fast. Simple things like repeated RLK feel uncomfortable versus LRK. I put one floor Tom next to my hi hat and that helps keep my speed up and tone going down instead of low, higher, kick. Any thoughts?
@RobBeatdownBrown2 жыл бұрын
Being a lefty on a right setup is tricky because you can’t just reverse the sticking. Your only option is to just try to reinterpret the orchestrations. Or just start experimenting with your own combinations

Hi Rob, Big fan of the channel! I have a question regarding my playing style. I began as an open handed drummer leading with my left hand. Only recently i started working on my left foot independence exercises and I am struggling a bit. Is it something that will come with time? Can i use my left foot as the hi hat control simultaneously with my left hand as the lead or should i practice leading with my right hand? Thanks!!

In my opinion I think the notation the way it’s written here might confuse a student. Is the fill supposed to be on Beats 1 and 2 with a crash on 3? If so, than okay. If not, than the notation should read a crash on beat 1 of bar 1 with the fill on beats 3 and 4 of the second bar, if that’s the correct feel. The notation should match the feel, in terms of what’s beat 1 and so forth. Of course everyone should do what they feel is best. I’m just giving my opinion.
@RobBeatdownBrown2 жыл бұрын
Don’t overthink this, man. Pretty clear in the exercises how and where to play ‘em.
@thighcurlcontest2 жыл бұрын
Since these fills are aimed at non-beginners, I don't think it should be necessary to explicitly write out where they're supposed to be played. Play them wherever you want, orchestrate it however you want. I think the real value in exercises like these is getting you to try different stickings to move around the kit better and more creatively... they're basically just rudiments applied musically.
