I love them! Beautiful bright sound. Everyone plays dark cymbals and I get it, cuz they sound amazing. But I think Paiste makes some of the most musical bright cymbals.

It’s because Paiste is a huge fan of using B8 bronze, and in my opinion are the only company that actually can make it sound good, and they make it sound really damn good

I use Paiste because they are cheap, but sound amazing. Why spend over 250 for a crash cymbal when I can buy a paiste crash for 150 and sounds just as good, if not better, as the overpriced Zildjian? Paiste will always be the best cymbals in my opinion.

@@blackatron666 Paiste cheap? Where the fuck do you live?? Maybe this 900 series is cheaper but generally the high-end cymbals of Paiste cost an eye... And this is coming from a person who lives in Italy and doesn't even get the overprice outside Europe.

As someone who mostly plays loud music, I don't have much use for super dark/dry cymbals. The Paiste Dark Energy ride though.....

@@6393dude I also play loud music. The only thing I like kind of brighter sounding are my hats. I use a 20" as my smallest crash and a 24" ride. Gives me darker sounds on medium thin/medium cymbals without sacrificing volume.

I tried the 20 inch ride at GC today and it sounds great. I'm really happy Paiste introduced this line. I know they label them intermediate but I think they are up there with the 2002 line and have their own distinct sound quality. A very special line.

I finally found a video on these 900 series that is not rock or metal. I wish you had music with it but still good. We'll done video. Thank you for it. I'm glad they are a little darker or lower in tone than the PST7 but I'm disappointed in it because it has a odd sound I don't like. I don't know how to describe it but I don't like what I hear. Came across these when first introduced at a local pro shop. I was looking for a good jazz ride/22". Tried the 900 22" on the rack, and was impressed. I could see this (the 22" at least), used as such....half the price of what I did go with, a 2002 Big Beat. Paiste is the best with B8, no doubt

Dude these sound AWESOME! So fun to listen to. That HF wash like plate glass shattering over a sheet of ice. It does die quick like you said-which I kinda prefer cuz you can do lots of cymbals and it doesn’t get messy. Unlike the other mid-range Paistes; the PST 7s and 8s have that unmusical manhole cover clang underneath the other sound layers. Attack/stick definition is clear and the bells have a bright ping that cuts to the front of the mix just right, like a beautiful church bell

According to this video, they sound better than the Alphas, which they are apparently replacing. Especially the 19" crash sounds excellent! The colorsound dryness works well with hi-hats and rides, but not crashes. 14" hihat's sound like a childs toy after the 15" heavys. I use 15" heavys myself, only 2000 series, but these sound fine too.

I think these cymbals will be great for rock or metal because of how much they cut. I also kinda prefer the 18”, 19”, and 20” crashes from this series (the smaller cymbals are way to bright) the only heavies I like from this series are the hi hats and rides, the heavy crashes are a big no no for me. Great playing and review, Rob.

Great review and I concur with you analysis. As I mentioned in the unpacking video comment section, I’m a Sabian player and I incorporate two “beginner” models (B8 Pro O-Zone and China) into my professional set-up. Sound is my only concern in deciding what cymbals to incorporate. If an inexpensive cymbal gives the tone you are looking for then use it (price point be damned). As with technique, gear selection should always be about letting our unique voice shine through on the instrument. Insightful as always Rob, looking forward to your next video. Please support Rob’s fine work on Patreon folks.

Hey Rob, great video as always! I put together a mix of Paistes for a punk gig: 16" 2002 crash, 18" PST7 thin crash, 20" 900 ride and 14" 900 Color Sound (sound edge) hats. I agree with everything you're saying in the video. The color sounds are definitely a little less "nice" sounding with the exception of the hihats. I really dig the sound edge version of the 14" color sound hats. The 20" rides were pretty different between the regular 900 and the color sound version, the regular one opens up a little more.

The crashes sound great, I would go for 18, 19 and 20.. also dig the china.. like to try the 18, but the 16 did speak to me... Nice review Rob, and awesome playing (as per usual) . these might mix well with Big Beats..mix and match? In any case they are way cool and they look real sexy.. I love Paiste. Was just listening again... The stage customs w/UV1's sound really tough.. I'm listening through a nice set of cans.. I'm impressed with this review. :) I keep coming back..lol.. I think Paiste should offer sound edge for the 15" Giant Beat and the Big Beat and THESE.. I keep coming back... I loved the Steve Gadd Shuffle during the Ride cymbal part.. I actually use that. Thanks man. I brought it into a session a couple months ago.. and the guitarist / producer in this session freaked... it changed the whole dynamic of the tune.... I told them..I learned it from Rob ..

Rob- Thanks for these videos, they have inspired me to pick up the drums again after 20 years! I do like the sound of the "natural" finished 900's, but I have also heard the "dyed" models as well, and I have found what others have pointed out; the application of the color coat adversely affects their sound. To me they often sound too clangey and electronic.

You say the color coating affects the sound, but you said the naturals have a coating as well. Is it just a clearcoat on top of the bronze, where the colored colorsounds have a layer of color and then a clearcoat on top? That could explain the difference in sound. The pricing is excellent for what you get. Just above PST7 in pricing, much nicer. Paiste goes through the roof though, if you want their nicest stuff. I picked up the 22 blue bell ride, which sounds awesome, but it's just painfully expensive. It doesn't crash/wash as much as the ride you played, that would be great to have next to it. I just love how affordable this series is.

It is massive. For that reason I use a Tama Star series stand, which is super heavy and double braced. You need to pay attention to where it goes above the legs to keep it stable. For me it's all ping and bell on that, so this 20" ride might fit really well next to it. Sometimes I miss a bit of crashability, the blue bell is just not made for that.

Honestly I like the 14" hats better than the 15" which sound too heavy to me

I think $160 isn't bad at all for a Paiste. I was curious how much they cost in Canada currency wise. Not sure what you use up there.

Anyone trying jazz with this series? The crashes don’t bother me, but that ride sounds great, i’m tired of so many zildjians and wannabezildjians that sound like a plumb tube

I answer to myself. Just retourned today a 22" ride, absolutely imposible to crash with a normal hit, and this was a "regular", I don't know how thick could be the "heavy" one

Hey Rob, I have 15" SE 2002 hats and I cracked the top hat. All of my other cymbals are 2002 as well. Are there other hats that would sound good with 2002s?

Either just grab another pair of SEs, or try a pair of Giant Beats. Same 2002 bronze alloy. Nice hats

@Rob Brown I'm stuggling to decide between these 900's with the odd size crashes (17,19) or the PST 7's with med. hats, heavy ride, and either 17" and 19" crashes or 18" crash and a light ride as the larger crash. Which cymbals are more versatile and/or musical?

Stay with the 900 , they are a semi-pro cymbal

@@sandrider1406 I went the handmade Turkish cymbals route and I love them. Some cutom made Soultone 16" hats and 24" ride, Bosphorus 22" and a Zultan 20"

Are these entry level cymbals? They sound like my first set of cymbals that were second hand inexpensive B8 cymbals (Meinl MCS).

Do you do any Paiste comparison videos? I have a whole set of 3000 serious that are supposedly a "step up" from the Formula 2002 series. The same source that I got those from now has an even bigger set of brand new Alpha series. Do you have an opinion on the Alpha series? Thanks.

I didn’t like everything in that line but they had a couple good ones in there. My 18” Alpha Swiss, though, still one the best sounding FX cymbals I’ve heard. Reintroduced the idea in the PST-X but it ain’t nearly as sweet

What's your opinion on the Paiste 2002 22" ride cymbal for rock? I have yet to play it, but I want a 22" Paiste ride that is under $400 and that seems the best.

Got it. 900 is good, colored sound like shit. Medium thick cymbals. Better than competing brands for price point. Great cymbals all around. Just wish the colored were just as good, that would be nice. I’m all about tone, I swap both Aax crash, hhx Omni ride, a custom crash, , and a k sweet 15 hat. Wide range to say the least but I blends great
