Brooooo, amazing Grove and technique, and I love the sound of your pad with your snare, the slow-mo was awesome as well. I totally appreciate all that you do for the drumming community. I've been following you since the first snare tuning video, and I have to give you props on staying healthy and fit, you still look like a totally different person, keep it up, And God Bless.

Mr. Brown...I hope you are doing well in this time of isolation. I know it must be frustrating to have your powerful energy contained at home, but let it be known, your light still illuminates the path for aspiring drummers. Thanks to your guidance, I am now feeling the “power of the pinky” on my left hand! I still have no great speed, but practice of rudiments each day is forming smoothness and consistency. This is what Your light has grown! ...and I love my “Groove Responsibly” T-Shirt!

Great lesson Rob.. Our drummer had a fantastic teacher in Paris, long long time ago (Ok, we're old :) ) and his master taught him the same way.. Plus, the outstanding master "Flam-Rolls" Roulements avec des Fla (Flams).. The flam's technique is amazing and gives you an extraordinary power ;) Really glad to see a drummer like you, explaining this.. Thanks.. Cheers from Italy.. Stay safe and take care.. Keep on rolling and drumming and teaching as you do!

Flam lover here. I'm going in deep. I think it doesn't matter how you play the alternating flam accents, more that it's a case of navigating the combinations (or single) accents in a bar of 4. As in, accent every 1, then 2, until 4, then accent pairs, 1+2, (1+4 is Ace), then switch to 3/4 or 6/8 and accent in on order every successive note. To spin these up in 16ths as you do from 8ths, is the goal

Good stuff as always Rob. Could you show in particular, {or tell) some of the flams you use in your shuffle grooves. I love that short and quick flam tap or flam accent you use on the snare. I cant seem to fit it in the correct place. example with sticking would be awesome. Thanks, Pete the Beat V.

Great exercises thanks. Some great ideas. I’ve been playing the flammed mills for a while and I’d also played the five pattern but some of the other stuff I hadn’t seen. One great thing I found with the flam mills is that you can move the accent through a grid. Ex. One bar with the accent on the 1.into one bar with the accent on 2. Into one bar with accent on 3. Into one bar with accent on 4. And finally two beats of 16th notes to get back to playing the accent on 1 (rather than having to play a double flam to get back to 1. ) One other exercise I’d found with these is to play a kind of 7/8 paradiddle. Two flammed mills into one flammed mill double paradiddle (lRrlrlr) then repeat starting on the opposite hand. This gives a nice 7/8 . I’m no expert but I love playing with flammed mills. Yours is the first video I’d seen showing some creative ways of using them. Great content. Thanks x

Drum set flams are a different animal than rudimental or drum corps flams... Drum set flams are very open, and both notes are "nearly" equal, vs a drum corps flam, where the grace note is very soft, the primary note is much louder and the notes are very close together.

Rob smooth stuff. To those watching who might think this is too marching band (my initial thought) or not rock band enough.. these exercises will give you great hand speed and if you pay attention some tips for feel which as Rob knows is hard to teach. That being said if you watch and learn and practice.. these will just make you better. This is an unpaid personal endorsement. I just like what I see!!!

Of course, now that the "Gaddiments" book is out we can keep ourselves busy using what he calls "the displacement approach" (either by one triplet or one sixteenth) with each of these exercises. But you already knew that, right? 😝

Hi, Rob! I started recording a lot of myself. When I got to the flams, I noticed that I had played them on tne beat instead of playing before the beat. After changing my approach to the flams, I got a lot of new insights. Do you think that the flam on the record should always be before the beat?

Watched a lot of Rob's stuff, but this one threw me for a loop. What is the down beat of the stick movement you started with? No clue here. I'm guessing you added some kind of double tap on the first R of RRLR, correct? It'll be a year before I get that down, if I'm correct. Yup, big time beginner, but dedicated.

It's just a right handed flam on the beat of each sixteenth note phrase. So you play a right handed flam on the first note of the rrlr phrase and a left handed flam on the first note of the llrl phrase.
