Learning the Purdie Shuffle moved me from the depths of frustration as a novice drummer to a confident player having much more fun. It gave me a completely new understanding of groove, and allowed me to incorporate its principles into many other styles of playing. Thank God for the Purdie Shuffle!

I'm genuinely not exaggerating when I tell you that for the better half of a decade, I have been trying to find a way to help my brain understand and process the mechanics of this specific groove. That fundamental breakdown was so helpful, it allowed me to tie everything together. It's like I just leveled-up or something 😂

New old drummer here. Just found you scrolling around and am sure glad I did. 'Was' a drummer many moons ago and had some chops. Now as an older guy I'd like to become as well rounded as I can and your vids inspire that. Can't say how much it's appreciated when you break down stuff like this so I can find the count easily. I literally walked from my PC down to the kit and did a half decent shuffle right out of the bag. Look forward to seeing and hearing more from you, will be taking some of this down to blue tooth into the elec. kit. It's really frustrating as a guy who used to play to have it in the head but not be able to get it out. Your vids have really aided the motor coordination company again. Thank you kindly.

Honestly, best Purdie shuffle video on KZbin. You went into all the areas and detailed where they need to be and what to do to get there. The only other one that I learned the Purdie Shuffle as well, was a video of Bernard Purdie himself teaching and throwing in the Oohs and Ahhs and you know, like yellin out loud what he’s playing and also yelling to the people lol. What a great guy. Best tip he gives, always wear leather soles. TAKE OFF THEM SNEAKERS!!

You nailed it! I recently watched a video on the history of the shuffle. It comes from the sound of a steam locomotive shuffling down the tracks. The high hat / ride cymbal "spang-a-lang" is the pistons in the engine driving the whole thing.

Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard someone breakdown the Purdie Shuffle quite like that. Thank you so much for REALLY breaking things down in such a simple way. I just started playing drums a few years ago and I’ve been playing on and off since then. I recently got very serious about my playing and after watching this video, you definitely blew my mind! I was focusing too much on the ghost notes and not working on tightening up my hi-hat work. Thank you so much for sharing!

Love your feel with that groove. One thing that helped me tighten up this groove was practicing my right hand high hat patterns at different volumes while keeping the kick and snare volume consistent. Specifically playing the hats as quiet as possible allowed me to feel the shuffle without focussing too much on it.

Man this guy grooves!! :) I love Bernard Purdie, the man oozes class and character, a total individual, out there for so long bustin some great grooves and coming up with more than a few along the way. His instructional videos were and are so entertaining, informative and inspiring as well, I really can't say enough about how much the man himself made me feel at ease with his off-the-wall approach and very humane way of seeing things, he was a confidence booster for me and I have never even met the guy!

Thanks Rob! dude, I've played drums since I was 16 - started in jazz band then went on to gig at venues playing swing, etc. I unfortunately never had lessons was self-taught so didn't learn a lot of my basics like the 40 rudiments, reading, etc.. I am embarrassed to say this is the first time I've learned the Purdie shuffle for its true feel. I played this shuffle today for like 2 straight hours but will be focusing on my shuffle now for a while to perfect it. I always played these shuffles without the ghost notes on the snare - which changes the whole dynamic of the beat. the triplet feel between the hats and the snare are so awesome. I'm also deaf in one ear and a lot of times when I'm learning a tune I can't quite hear the highs so I miss hat work and some ghosting, so videos like this breaking it down are so helpful. thanks for breaking it down man! also, your 5 shuffle beat video is EPIC, thank you so much for breaking the shuffles down (Pocaro, Bonham, Purdie, etc). I'm glad to have found your channel man, much appreciated! Justin - Atlanta, GA

This guy is awesome at instructing that applies to all levels...I was first impressed with rim shots...after giving up playing decades ago and coming back to it now...and the 70s when I played was all about rim shots being accents not the constant...I could not maintain constant accuracy of rim shots until Mr. Brown gifted the way to measure height of the snare...Man... that so instantly worked I've been a fan ever since...Happy B day...
