So that is what 64 years of love and dedication towards the art of drumming looks like.. What a true legend.. This has to be the most entertaining drum video ever!
@dallin_stagg9 жыл бұрын
I loved how he talked about how he's done thousands of albums. It shows that you really don't need to have fast hands. The ones that get the call are the ones that serve the music and do not feel served by the music. They put the music over the drums. A selfish drummer kills music very quickly. With his groove, the music is unstoppable!
@DrumeoOfficial9 жыл бұрын
Dallin Stagg Amen!
@ogden7009 жыл бұрын
Dallin Stagg Uhhm...are you declaring that Bernard Purdie (*Bernard Purdie!*) doesn't have fast hands? It may be possible to make a more arrogant remark than that, but I can't imagine quite how at this moment. For one, you have absolutely *no* idea--None, Zero, Nil*--how fast Mr. Purdie can, or can't, play from this one video--a video, note, where he is expressly demonstrating (a.) control and (b.) groove. But for two, total nobodies in the drum universe--like you and I--simply shut up and reverence in the presence of the divinities, not make backhanded put-downs in contemptible attempts to reflect some small glory on ourselves. I am sure that Bernard Purdie can be plenty fast if he needs, thank.-you.
@HybridFitness7629 жыл бұрын
Bradford Northern Firstly Captain Keyboard Warrior, that was clearly not a declaration of Bernard Purdie having slow hands simply an acknowledgement of how someone can make it in the music industry as a drummer who FAVORS technique, groove, feel etc... over speed. Are you a personal friend of Bernard or do you just feel super offended when someone states their opinion? FYI not looking for a back fourth childish argument, simply defending Dallin Stagg as your reply came across as rude and condescending so why don't you calm down.
@ogden7009 жыл бұрын
Ian Mc Neill Then stay away from deprecatory fixation on my motivation (irrelevant, not to mention inaccessible) and be clearer on your concession of my point of rebuke: a backhanded remark on the technique of a musician of Bernard Purdie's supreme eminence (and who, please note, appeared here, purely for our benefit, *pro bono*) is as deplorable as it is, which I show, entirely without foundation.
@Drumaier9 жыл бұрын
Bradford Northern nah! you got his comment all backwards. And you are the one sounding as arrogant as hell dude with you attitude! did you read that he said that Purdie makes music unstoppable?. Plus what he says is plain true. The magic of Purdie isn't in his velocity, and even he is admiting he don care about playing fast and here he shows how fast he gets tyred. But that is not a problem, since heavy metal bands aren't his niche.

Mr. Purdie exemplifies what a gigging drummer should be. He understands that being the drummer means that he is in control of the feel of the band and what they accomplished is directly a part of what he inspires in his playing. Most of the time in commercial music is not the flash in your bang it's the bang that you give to the band. What a truly outstanding individual. Thank you drumeo for this opportunity.

I have never heard of this man and since I am a jazz drummer I feel he should have at least be known by me. What I mean is I am glad I was introduced. He is a true statesman eh? I loved his quote. and I wonder if perhaps I did not hear about him because he is so humble. I try to be and since I lost my leg 5 years ago I have to be. And since I got behind the kit again one year ago this month I have continued to be humble because I have at least overcome that. You see, I am in constant, chronic and severe pain. 24/7 but I don't feel pain when i play or when I hear. thank you Purdie for that today. Your humility speaks volumes. I never would have made you for a drummer on the street but you sir do have a drummer's attitude from your laugh to your shuffle. Proceed good sir: Thanks for making my day. I just turned 49 and my kid was bullied at school for being Aboriginal and I kept telling you need to learn to have compassion and to pray for these people, so anyhow she was too upset to join her pa on his birthday on Wednesday but you made my week Purdie because I learned. My favorite was the reading of the statement you made about being a world class drummer. You are a master. After that I was all ears. Thanks Drumeo.

JohnFive Eagles Szuros Bernard Purdie has played with plenty of jazz artists, as stated in the video, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Smith, Sonny Phillips... Are you saying that you only exclusively play jazz? 'Cause first of all, I'm a jazz drummer myself but all my friends and I don't even play it when we first start out drums. I was (and still into) a LOT of funk/r&b/soul, James Brown, Tower of Power, Earth Wind and Fire, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder before taking up jazz. Also many of my fellow jazz drummers are completely aware of Bernard Purdie and the groove he brings... his lessons should transcend for all drummers regardless of genre.

All I have to say is... I thought I was good. I will be when I finish the journey. To New Orleans, Brazil, Africa, Latin America, Seattle, New York, London, and all the above. Drumming is my life and will be forever. This lesson proves you need no sheet music to play along or improvise. You need to feel it, dive right in. That's what jazz, funk, life is all about. Observation of the sticks, footwork, and syncopation is the key. I just sat here hypnotized and slowly falling asleep, idle, yet still typing, composing this comment into a trance whilst listening to his speech, his playing, his teaching. Everything. This collaboration with one of my favorite session teachers, Jared Falk, was awesome. I recognized swing, ragtime. Soul. All of it. I kid you not, Bernard Purdie is my new favorite drummer, he demotes Neil Peart down to second! :D. Thanks Drumeo for this video. I've been subbed to this channel for a small while and I love it. These people are complete strangers, but they feel like family. I respect and love them as much as my blood sister, brother, mom, dad. Bernard is my grandpa now. I've never really had one. Thank you, so so much for all your work. I will never be close to be completing my journey. Everything is infinite, even after our time of dying. Everyone discovers something new everyday. I'm a percussionist in Junior High symphonic band, and I'm always wanting to have all of these mallets or sticks like the richer kids that go to my school, but due to seeing how old this legendary GOD is, I've had time to think, hey I gotta make due with what I got. I feel like I got a ton of things in my blood- iron, plasma, cells. But I feel I have Native American, blues, jazz, swing, and even European spirit in me. And I will never play with sneakers again. I need to play on my toes. I love rock music, but I've started to love jazz and blues even more. Thank you for this, Bernard. Drumeo, drummers, my family. Flams are my fams, syncopation is my inspiration, and percussion means I'm rushin, in a good way. THANK YOU ALL

I mean, Mr Purdie is right up there the great of all time! I would even say on the Mount Rushmore of drumming he should and would be right up there! Which brings me to my point of, who the hell are the knuckleheads who "disliked" this lesson? Unreal smdh!

I love how Bernard is so passionate and laid back while drumming. I find it amazing how he can really get into a beat and how he can just build onto it. Bernard "Pretty" Purdie is truly an amazing drummer.

IMO, This is by and far the one of the most versatile drumbeats ever. Using the Purdie Shuffle, and depending on the time signature and BPM. 2/4 4/4 6/8 12/8 Rock, Funk, Shuffle, Jazz Swing. Even elements of Hip Hop too. Combined you have many possibilities using half time as well. Not to mention, (but I will), This is a great tutorial on learning and understanding meter and syncopation without a doubt. It doesn't matter what instrument you play. This is very useful!

It's crazy. I've only been learning drums for half a year, but just today I was practicing a shuffle groove and realized how easy it was to move to either 6/8 or a straight 4 and back and forth. The shuffle is like a magical bridge between those two worlds!

Legend!!! This was not a drum lesson, this was a journey of life. For those of us old enough to know who this man is hearing the music on albums and the radio in the late 60s and throughout the 70s he is the GOAT. Sure there are others worthy of mention who also contributed and I am not discounting them. However, this man changed the drum kit FOREVER. There is a reason why he is on damn near everything!!!
