I got some of these from my wife's grandma over 25 years ago and they have survived floods, droughts and extreme cold. She called them Tree Onions. If one takes individual small bulbs and plant them some distance apart, in early summer/fall, come next year one can have really big green onions. I also grow Red Sun Shallots, Dutch Red Shallots and Yellow Potato Onions(Spring planted). We eat about as many onions as we do potatoes(which I also plant in 10" pots).

Oh this is interesting. I purchased bulbs from her in September! I had to wait to plant for a full month because our temps were still high and I think a couple of them dried out. I’d say 12 of 15 bulbs took off. I had questions for her after the purchase about the timing of my planting and she was very responsive.

Once they start to multiply, spreading them would be perfect. Then you’ll have more and they will grow bigger. 😊

The little bulbils are fantastic as pearl onions in creamed peas! I find the main "bulb" (they don't really bulb) to be a little pungent for my personal taste, but the new spring stalks are great.
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy10 ай бұрын
Here I do use the bulb sometimes, to me the taste like a shallot, it can depend on everyone's soil or how they are growing them, but I mainly use the green, but OH YES, the baby top sets are like tiny pearl onions, THANK YOU

I got my walking onions from the grocery store 🤣 Sold as green onions for 88 cents a bunch. I planted them and stuck them under a grow light, and having been growing them for months and months indoors. I haven't used any in a while, but still water them. Suddenly, they're sprouting all kinds of new onions and I was so confused, as I've never heard of walking onions. I couldn't find any information online about what I was seeing, so I took a picture of them, used google lens to identify them and discovered walking onions. A quick search on KZbin brought me here. I'm tempted to put the little guys outside, but last year I grew green onions in the garden and ended up with millions of onion aphids all over them and my chives.

I purchased some from a reputable company. They will be two years old this spring and have never walked. They have muliplied and I separated them and replanted them all. They look like my regular multiplying onions. Am I doing something wrong or does it take a long time before they have topsets? I paid quite a bit for them from a company I have ordered a lot from. Did I get a switched order or what? 😢
@Valerie1185911 ай бұрын
Mine have taken a while too. It will be second year planted and no onions on the stalk yet.
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy11 ай бұрын
Without knowing the company, I don’t know because bunching onions, a green onion, can grow for many years and they will never have top sets. The baby walking onions I grow here usually will throw at least one group of baby onions within a year. Maybe try adding some compost tea to them as they’re growing the spring. I would Think by now they should have developed top sets (?)
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy11 ай бұрын
@@Valerie11859are you sure they are true walking onions? Try compost tea
@almostoily754111 ай бұрын
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy I will try that. I had some Osmocote fertilizer and threw a little of it in the container last summer. Now I have been making compost in place containers since watching your videos but I don't have one in that container. The onions are the only thing planted in it.
