I love my walking onions, too! They come up in the most unexpected places sometimes! Sometimes we have a mild winter here in Oklahoma, but this year is supposed to be cold & wet. I can usually harvest them most of the winter up by my house. I have a small kitchen window with a very narrow sill, but I think I will start a couple in 6" pots. We had a pretty wet summer, so they did very good this year! I had melanoma & had 2 surgeries 11 or 12 years ago & didn't garden for several years. I got back into it last year. It's amazing to me that I still have them! In the spring I like to start them in little pots & give them to my friends so they can enjoy them, too. God Bless!

Sometimes my onions get aphids during the cold winter months, you can either wash them off or just leave them. They tend not usually to kill the plants. But I would wash them off at the hose or a wet paper towel.

I did use detergent w/water, then followed through with the strong water jet but they didn’t enjoy the aggression. The foliage dried up and there was nowhere else to go! Next time l plant them l will use my homemade compost. The stuff l used mustn’t have been a good one, even though l threw old leaves and organic matter onto them, they turned up their heels and refused to go on any further after what l did to save them lol. The nutrient base in the soil used was poor enabling the ease of the infestation. Next time l will take my lesson and not repeat what l did.

I never heard of these until I started watching your videos last year Robbie. I now have doubled my onions from 15 to at least 30 now. We pulled one of the oldest ones to try the bulb, and I cut it just above the root and put the root back in the ground. It came up, still alive, but we will see...I might test another one if we eat a bulb.... I really love these for the greens and they are so high in Vitamin K.

If you put the bottom part of the bulb with roots back and they grow, they should grow just like a white onion and grow a whole new plant. That’s wonderful. I’m with you I love these onions, thanks for sharing all this.

I would love to grow some again, but nobody I know grows them. They used to grow wild in my yard, but I didn't know what they were! I wish I could throw you a little money and have a personal garden tour and get a few cuttings of things when I am around that area.

Is it important to plant the bulbils to rejuvenate your stock? Or will the plant keep giving and giving and allow you to harvest the bulbils for consumption?
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, Some of these bulbils onion plants will live for many years. Great question though, as it’s good to have young ones, coming up as the older ones continue to grow too.

I just got a few last year. I planted them in two five gallon buckets. Hubby and I had issues and didn't garden most of this year. Well, I finally was able to move the best bucket closer to the house so I could water it. They finally set tops. The other bucket only had water a couple of times. About six weeks ago there was a fire in the adjacent hayfield to the garden area with the smaller bucket of onions. My garden space caught fire. I only had the onions and fruit trees and perennials in it. Well, everything was killed except one mulberry tree...then it finally started to rain and guess what? Yep, one onion greened up! I was so excited! I moved the bucket closer to the house and planted rosemary with it. It has grown a good bit just this week since the rain has been falling. So, the point is, I neglected them, then nature threw a curve ball ( the bottom of the bucket was even melted some!), and they were still resilient. I don't suggest neglecting them or setting them on fire, but if you do, all may not be lost 😂

How many walking onion bulbs equal 1 normal onion? Say a recipe calls for 1 medium onion, how many walking onions would you use instead? Or would you just weigh a medium onion and use the equivalent amount of walking onions?
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Жыл бұрын
That for me is a hard one to answer, because the bulbs are very small. I use them mainly for green onions. To use a larger Walking onion bulb, for medium onion you’re probably would need six or seven.

Thank you for your reply. I assumed it might be tedious to figure out the proportions AND to gather the necessary amount of EWO bulbs. Still, I’m curious enough about EWO to give them a try and expect delivery of mine by tomorrow. Thanks for mentioning the EWO so often; it’s taken repeated viewings of your garden tours to convince me to go for it.

Do your walking onions stay green all year long? I'm in N TX and they were green but the heat dried them out to a crisp. I just checked some and some rotten and some survived. Am I doing something wrong? Should they be green all year? This year was brutal 😭

We had them growing all over in NEPa. I brought some down to Florida with me and they have only made onion heads 2 times since 2010. I think they do better where you get even a short winter. Ive just treat them like green onions

@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy I have had them in my garden in full Florida sun. Last spring was one of the times they actually made the bulb heads but we had a very cold winter for a change...like 3 days of 17 degrees with 30 mph sustained winds, then a while of below freezing nights. Very unusual. Anyway I took those babies and potted them and tried full sun and partial shade. No joy

I'm waiting upon bulbils I ordered from a seller on eBay here in Canada. It's the wrong season for them so I think i'll mix up some potting soil and leaves and start them up indoors, possibly in the cold attic so as to harden them off.

Some tree onion plants will set both seeds (if pollinated) and bulbils. Seed recovered this way is likely to be nonviable, but if it is, it's likely not to be true to type (more likely to either revert to the cepa parent, or the fistulosum parent, or to a hybrid of either with the more recent parent). If you do recover seed from your tree onion plant, you should try to germinate it and see what you get. It might be good.
