I am 2 weeks into a 1 year journey of throwing mids and putters only and man, embarrassingly my game is much improved. Lines are straight, feels more like actual golf instead of caring so much about distance. This doesn’t really apply to this video but I felt like telling someone.

If you continue your backhand journey, I’ll be right there following along.

Great question and idea! I'll have to see about recording one of them! I know for some folks they meet me in a field, but you can pretty much do the entire lesson from your phone! Some do it from the computer, but most are on tablet or phone! We'll go through form or putting (student's choice on what they want to work on) and I have a multitude of camera angles set up here in the office to show what body positions you're trying to get into, as well as have you stand up to get into those positions yourself. For folks that want to throw during the lesson if they have a net or something set up we can certainly maximize the time there. But we've had folks take the call from the course all the way to the home office. I'll see about getting one recorded and posting it though!! If you look up Overthrow Form Reviews they do monthly, it looks similar to that except with it being one on one it's incredibly interactive for a chance for both of us to ask very specific questions to get the most out of the time!

Turned out the hole asked for a 350 hyzer, and my best 400 throws were big wide open flexes… Definitely good to know your distances and discs, but super important to know how much distance is lost or gained on different shot shapes.

I love doing this field exercise, especially since I play at different elevation every 6 months. My advice would be to not just throw all your discs once, but throw then 3 times, in the same direction/conditions. 1 throw could be a shank, another could be a fluke. Get your average distance for each disc and if you're a nerd (aka know a bit of maths), get your standard deviation on these 3 throws, this will show you the discs with which you are the most consistent. Bonus point: map the average distance of your throws to the speed number of the discs. If/Where the curve flattens, that's the max speed disc you should throw for now.
@brianreigle7905Ай бұрын
I have gone to my local field close to my house and just throw different shots and then get my measuring wheel out and see how far my shots went and what type of shot I threw with each disc. For me I found I have a much better understanding on what each disc can do and my rough distances on each disc when I try to rip on it and just throw a nice even powered shot. Like most I would always like to throw farther which is a work in progress but at least knowing what my discs can do and distances on them is really helpful when I'm on the course. As for your distances that you can/can't throw it don't really matter to me vs how easy it is to follow and implement some of the techniques you teach. I find your videos informative and easy to follow. Really appreciate the videos you put out. Thank you.

This is great info for new players for sure. I also do this, flat ground, no wind and experiment with distances so I have my most accurate discs for a 150,200,250,300,350, and 400' shot backhand, and the same for forehand. (different discs). Then once I have done all this work figuring it all out, I take a sharpie and write this info on the top of the disc so I don't have to rely on my memory when I have 30 seconds to pick a disc and shot shape and execute it. Extra tip: when you buy a new disc, take it out to the field with your preferred disc for that shot and put them up against each other like a battle for your bag. You're getting reps and building trust with a disc

I think going into field sessions with a goal or intention is super important even if it’s small or so big you probably won’t get there. You may not hit your goals but it guides the work your doing so your not just throwing hard and getting frustrated. Cause if you’re working on distance and you’re at a plateau like most folks eventually will hit, unlocking that next 25-50ft is SUPER hard and can be SUPER frustrating, particularly if you’re like most people and don’t know what you’re doing wrong. Pick a thing to work on, whether that’s footwork, some timing piece, whatever…film it and see how you do. Reflect on are you doing that, taking reasonable breaks between throwing sets and try again. Every now and again something gets incrementally better, and on rare occasions something unlocks. Most of the time nothing will noticeably change and you’ll have to find the little wins like “I didn’t really do that timing piece consistently but I did get a few off where I did that better” and those are the tiny little wins that get you from one session to the next that eventually help you see actual improvement. Example…I am like Robbie in that distance plateau, I want to hit 400ft…so I tend to alternate between working on footwork cause I do a bit of the Brodie front duck foot opening too early thing, and improving my arm whip cause I have a tendency to ‘throw my whole arm’ at the shot where my elbow is opening too early. I have other things like getting the core involved in my reach back, and the angle of my reach back…but it’s picking out the main “wrong” things that are keeping you from getting to your goals and attacking those first…in my opinion.
@t.stegall5270Ай бұрын
When I do this exercise with any wind, I will do it twice, from opposite directions and average the two to get a reasonable distance for the disc. When I am just looking to see how far I can throw not specific to any inidividual disc, I will take a group of discs from 7 speed up to 12 and throw 22 drives. I then toss out the shortest and longest throws and average the other 20 throws. I do this periodically to see if my form is improving to produce more distance or more consistency with distance.
@matgbx5897Ай бұрын

I use going to a field and throwing as my work out. I’ll throw a putter round, then mids and then drivers. Jogging to the disc and throwing them back. The last round I take all my favorite forehand disc. I’m just like you, 325-350ft average. If anything I would want to be better then throwing far would be accuracy and being able to throw the disc where I want it to go. I think accuracy is way more important then distance for the average disc golf player.

Why walk away, in a tournament you can't drop because of the wind. If it's windy you can learn a lot about how your discs will fly and how far by practicing on a windy day. Thanks for the content and all you do for the community.
@RobbieCDiscgolfАй бұрын
I can totally agree on working in the wind! If you're trying to see how the wind affects the flight of your discs it's essential. Today I was just trying to feel out distances though and the wind feels like it can have both a positive and negative effect regarding those numbers. Too many folks throw in a tail wind and think their distances are higher than in reality, and that affects their shot selection on the course in a negative way. Just as throwing non stop into a headwind could discourage your game and have you overshooting holes when out on the course. The base line feels vital.

Having something to aim at helps me throw farther when doing field work. Throw some discs without a target, then set up a basket about 20 feet past the disc that went the longest, then throw those discs again. If you're like me, when throwing with something to aim at, some of your throws will actually go past the basket.

Not only did I START Disc golf by throwing in a field... I did it with my friend that got me into it, and we stood on opposite sides of the field.. which meant very little walking... and throwing the same 2-3 discs over and over... I got to 300ft before my 1st round with my own discs... (With a Jade... What a GREAT starter disc!!! (Shame I left it on a field, named & numbered, never to be returned... but I still find 90% of lost discs in Wellington get returned (if they don't land in that "Safe Place" where all your left socks end up.) Interesting observation... I would lay bets that if you throw 250-300 ft across a field to a friend... you will get more c1's than if you were throwing across that field to a basket... Think about that next time your doing an upshot... give it a try... don't overthink the shot, and say (out loud)... "Here you go [Insert friends name here]" and throw... I did this on my 1st tournament throwing a lob over a hedge, staring straight at the basket through the hedge and lobbing it out slightly to the side... dang near crashed into the basket and sat 1m on. We all forget that "Return to bag" skill shot we're all so good at yet ignore and overthink in a game... specially a friendly when you SHOULD be throwing weird shots... how else do you learn! (I basketed a grenade at 30ft the other day while telling someone about my "frisbee" throw while staring at the target... (ok it was the 1st time I actually put it in, but bags, tees and even a dog have been on my bullseye list with that one).

yeah, the best advice I could give a new disc golfer that has a bag full of discs is go to a field and set up a fairway with cones, or just natural O.B and warmup first for 20 minutes, then throw all your putters HARD with full power keeping them inside the fairway on an open field and record the "average max distance" of each throw. then move on to midranges...etc...etc... but you must keep the discs within the fairway lines ( cones ) whatever you use. people need to challenge themselves. I have a friend that only plays one course. he won't do any field work whatsoever. I could help him so much he has no clue how he could improve his game in just one year of field work.

To anyone who needs to hear this, once you can throw 300ft, just focus on putting. I started off throwing 300ft as a brand new player with 10 years of experience as a handler in Ultimate. I focused too much on distance, and can now throw 450ft without issue. However, my putting range ends at 25ft. After that, I go from being 90% accurate, to 40% accurate at the edge of C1, to 10% accurate in C2. I went from thinking long distance drives were the coolest part of disc golf, to admiring people who can putt from 40ft with ease. Most holes are designed around the 250 to 300ft mark anyways. Nothing to be ashamed of. 95% people that say they throw 400, have maybe come close a few times in their life. Most of all non pro tour level courses require about 350 of accurate power with a good putt to be a 950ish player. What I’ve noticed most people that get to good form top out at a high 50mph to maybe low 60mph backhand on a consistent basis. Which typically leads to about 370-400 foot power with the right disc selection.

If anyone ever asks you why you coach when you only throw x far, you shouldn't even address them. They never played sports for any team. The Coach is someone who can spot technique or form inconsistences, and offer advise to correct them. Let them go throw the shoulder out doing it their way. I coached tennis for years, and had many students who could take me in a full match. I think you throw a little guarded, like you had a previous injury and your protecting yourself without you realizing it.
