G'day again Robbie. I've been checking the yabby numbers coming to the edge to feed at night in my dam- six last night. It'll be close to a hundred when the water warms a bit- we both need to be patient :) Robbie I don't know if you or the missus are gardeners, but we grow most of our veges and have lots of fruit trees, plus flowers etc. I bring all my carp home and either bury a big one under fruit trees now and then, or put a layer of them on one of the compost heaps and cover them with leaves, lawn clippings, dirt etc. I buried nearly sixty fish, up to three kilos, in one heap last summer and I've just added it to the wifes vege beds. We've seen two gill covers and two big scales- that's it. The rest has completely broken down into fantastic compost,- the best you can get- almost no effort and no smell. Too good to waste :) Cheers mate. Jay.

Thanks so much Jay. I use to enjoy gardening but haven't had a garden for years. I've had a colourful life. I've been married twice. When I was with my first wife I loved gardening. I even spent 12 months working in a nursery back in the late 90s. After we divorced I lost interest in just about everything except fishing. Most things came back but the gardening but never did unfortunately. Every time I start a veggie garden it ends in weeds and dead plants. I can't help but think that when I'm older it will all come back.

Robbie I hunt quite a bit- I'm a flintknapper and bow hunt using stone arrowheads that I make myself- have done for decades. Also love fishing. We garden and have a couple of Jersey cows. There's nothing more satisfying to me that sitting down to a beautiful meal- main course and sweets- where everything on the table we've produced ourselves. It's good for the soul mate :) @@robbiefishing

Great stuff mate. I must get out and try the place I’ve been trying to tell you about and see if there’s any activity. Byrne lagoon just south of the Murray River bridge on the Lincoln causeway definitely has something in it, I see boils almost every morning when I pass it. It has (used to for sure) yabbies and a lot of turtles but after the flooding there could be anything in there.
@robbiefishing
@robbiefishing Жыл бұрын
That sounds awesome Glen, good luck. No doubt there will be something there, but what? I have this belief that Australia is a very dry continent and no reasonable amount of water will go to waste. There may be carp. If not, then there might be redfin, or yabbies, or even turtles. Something will definitely be using it in one way or another.

Enough yabbies for a meal and the carp might not be desirable but they kept the day active and entertaining. Thank you for sharing. The discussion of record fish a few days back sort of continues. We have an assortment of "snapping turtles" here. A very large one was recently reported but won't occupy any record slots as it was found beached and deceased. No apparent cause of death so maybe just age.

As you can see, I'm catching up on your previous vids, I'm a bit envious that you're able to kill those carp and eat other fish you catch like perch, we're only allowed to take trout (rare) or salmon (very rare) plus it costs a fortune to fish the waters that have them. Carp breed like rabbits and those under 10 lbs are easy to catch, 5 hour fishing matches regularly produce winning weights of over 300 lb plus. I'm really enjoying your channel, thanks, take care, Norfolk, UK, Ray

A great video but in qld we can't throw dead carp back in the water we have to dispose of them above the high water mark apparently the eggs can stay viable for approximately 6 months after the fish has been killed is this true ,?
@robbiefishing
@robbiefishing Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. I don't believe that for one minute. I believe you, and believe the rule, but done believe that eggs from a dead fish can still survive. The timing would have to be absolutely spot on, right when the fish is about to drop. The eggs wouldn't survive long in a dead fish. And then there's the issue of finding a male willing to fertilise them.

With Carp Robbie I do similar, but I also cut them open in case they have any eggs, Carp are so tough I’m not sure that the eggs are not viable even though the fish is dead. What do you think, am I wasting my time? Thanks for another great video.
@robbiefishing
@robbiefishing Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. I think the timing would need to be precision accurate before there was a problem. The parent carp isn't just a storage device. They feed the eggs, their could be issues with temperature and importantly, they still need to be fertilised by a male. I guess if the carp was seconds from dropping and then you there it back in with males it could be a problem, but I doubt it. Then there's the fact that I caught 10 or so, and there's probably 2,000,000 in there with eggs that I didn't catch. That's just my theory, and I'm not an expert.

Dead carp can't spawn mate. That is just a myth. The parent carp isn't just an egg holding device. The parent actually feeds those eggs. The moment the patent dies, so would the eggs. Even if they didn't, it would need to be timed perfectly for a male to come along and fertilise them. Males usually stimulate females to get them to drop eggs. They do this by rubbing against them as they swim. They wouldn't be stimulating these dead carp. And even if they did, there's still 2 million carp in there that I didn't catch. And if I didn't go fishing those fish would all still be alive. LOL But at the end of the day, I highly doubt that these small carp would be mature enough to carry eggs anyway.
