I grew galangal in my yard in Malaysia last year. It is now a very healthy bush of galangal, we harvest it whenever we need it. Ver easy to grow in Malaysia. Galangal is easily available in most Malaysian wet markets and supermarkets, cheap too. But I hate having to go out to buy it. So I bought a piece for just RM2 (US$1), I planted it in a pot, didn't plant it direct in the ground cos I think it is too hard to dig out when it's on ground, easier to harvest from a plastic pot. I just cut a big door at one side of the pot and pull a galangal piece out...

Hi! Very nice video! Extremely helpful! May I ask a very amateur question? I bought some Galangal from a grocery in Thailand. It's quite mature already as the rhizome is quite tough when sliced. Also, on one end they have 2 inch long stems. If I replant this, I keep the 2 inch stems above the soil, right? Or do I place the whole things under the soil? Sorry If I sound very amateur! Galangal is not native of the Philippines so I would really like to do everything right. Thank you very much!

Margaret Alexie de Leon Hi Margaret & sorry for taking so long to get back to you.. I'd plant it so the top of the root/rhizome is about 1"/2.5cm below the surface of the soil.. If you have buried it a bit deeper I don't think it would hurt the plant too much.. Did you get it into the ground at all? Rob..

Hi Rob, I'm so glad to find you on youtube with such a great information on galangal. Recently I just bought few pieces from Thai grocery shop in Sydney and being very tempting to grow from it. Before I found you, I have put them in water and they all get slimmy layers around. Should I give them a good clean before putting in pot? Also can I cut them in small pieces first before planting as they are big chunk of rhizomes from grocery shop? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Again Loby Li. I would plant out sections of no smaller than about 50mm/2" in length. Couldn't hurt to give them a quick rinse but I don't think you should need to scrub them. They might do best inside over Winter & you can move them out in spring with your Rosellas when the weather warms up a bit. Hope that helps some.

I'm not sure what to do about my ginger it is starting to die back but I presume if I keep it away from frost or at least cover it in the greenhouse it will sprout up again in spring? It seems to have grown really well, so we might even be able to eat some of it. Best Wishes from France!

+Deborah Donald Hi Deborah. I have frozen it whole & also used the blender method with nothing added other than a small amount of water to help it process. +Elizabeth Veness They may do OK if the soil doesn't get too wet Elizabeth. If you can pop them into a decent size pot & move them inside they may just hang in there with a bit of greenery. Would definitely give them a great head start to next seasons crop if you could keep them green & over winter them inside.

I didn't grow all the eggplants but have passed them on to folks that have. Have had mixed reports back with some having poor germination rates (might be the grower not the seed ;-) ) & another chap said they went really well. I sowed out a few of the smaller egg size & had OK results until the root knot nematodes finished them off. Think I showed them in a clip at some point. I still have some seeds left including the small pea variety so will give them a spin in the patch. Will email you about the galangal later today when I get onto the computer & grab your address ;-) Thanks for the kind words & will pass them on to my parents. All the best mate & hope your health is improving. Rob,

BTW, Compost works just as well & depending on how you make it pit will probably contain worm castings in it anyway. 😉 Cheers & happy growing Kathi.
