Fellow comedian, actor and presenter, Omid Djalili joins Rob this week. The old friends chat about meeting on the comedy circuit in the 90’s, the challenges of building successful careers in the entertainment industry and meeting a young Michael McIntyre.
They discuss Omid’s enjoyable Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again experience and the moment Cameron Mackintosh confronted him after his hilarious improv moment whilst performing in the West End musical, Oliver! Also, the comedians chat about the experience of working with some of the biggest names in Hollywood and the anticipation of performing at a drive-in stand up gig to an audience of 300 cars.

Such a joy. two pros, who are also friends, enjoying the push and pull of banter. It's been a decade since I was in my very much smaller corner of the scene, but that to-and-fro, that gift of creativity, is what I miss most and it's something that (almost) is simply not found elsewhere. It still makes me smile - cheers! 😊

Thanks Rob for your little KZbin program. I have watched all and giggled. Thanks for introducing this Australian to Omid Djalili. Hilarious. Also, I know what you meant about having your audience in uncomfortable seats as my daughter and I saw you at Portsmouth’s Guildhall last September!! (And John Bishop did not swear that night!)

@@healthandharmony They were in their homes, and Rob used the language of a TV studio recording where a floor manager signals that if they don't stop soon they'll crash the credits, or the allotted time for a guest. So him using that phrase was a bit funny.

Seems Oliver lends itself to going off-script. I recall in 1997 Barry Humphries as Fagin going off script (I think!), when toast fell off his fork and landed on top of the orchestra pit. There then followed about a minute of Fagin enlisting the assistance of Oliver to hold his belt while he leaned over to recover the toast. The boy seemed to have no idea what was happening. Fagin turned around and looked at him and said “What’s the matter? You’re looking like this doesn’t happen every night!” On eventual recovery of the toast, the Fagin and the audience celebrated, then Barry said “Now, where were we?”, and resumed the script where he’d left off before the toast saga. Fagin just seems to be that kind of naughty role that actors have fun with...?

He is great but I do not like when he mimics persian accent wrongly. No Iranian speaks English with that accent. That's more Arabic. He also has never been to Iran as far as I know. So his imagination of Iran matches a lot what the media says, so he delivers what people in west like to imagine and believe. That bothers me a bit.
