How I set up my wing foil gear for going fast and gaining better control in strong winds. Follow me along in this short venture into the world of Speed Wing Foiling and get an insight about my mast and strap position as well as some pointers in regards to stance and how to squeeze that last bit of speed out of your wing foil gear.

I used to have only Gaastra and Mistral stuff because Robby had that gear. He was and is still a Hero in Holland.

Totally agree. If I can be powered up windsurfing on a 5.8 or smaller and the wind is steady (especially not offshore/gusty), I'll be windsurfing. If it's light or gusty, I'll be on wing gear, just enjoying the smooth ride and not worrying about speed (it will feel fast enough, but I know I'm slow winging). I'll be 57 in a week. You're an inspiration to everyone! Thank you.

Pretty fast. I managed 24mph in perfect flat water… that felt insane. Never mind 30+ in that wild sea state. Good effort

Thank you Robby for some nice tips. Im starting up on wing surfing and you have some great tips about your gear and how it is setup and what wind speeds you like. That helps a lot. Im 92 kg (tall) on a 115 L board (its to big) with a 6.0 wing. Im strugling a bit how small a board I can go down to comfortably, maybe a 85 or 75 like you. Greetings from Denmark

Wow! I didn't realise, looks like the Naish masts connection has gone the way of Armstrong now! Interesting hearing Robby talking about wings lift vs area and other factors adjusting it, I design mine too. I think there's a lot of feeling from riders that smaller is better but personally I think there's too much focus on area when chord thickness is often the penalty for people's moves to low area wings. My latest is in progress, winter here in NZ and I'm lucky to get one or two days in the weekend, this one is super thin and a challenge to prepare for moulding from but I think it's going to be fast with a real waves sweet spot in speed range.

Excellent video! I appreciate the insight and I am somewhat surprised that you aren't using a harness. I still have the mentality that wing sizes below 4.x are great but the conditions then favor windsurfing and that is where I change gear. I too love the light conditions for foiling and wouldn't want to windsurf in wind less than 15-17 kts but foiling is so amaing. Mahalo!

I typically wind foil from 8-18, then shortboard windsurf 19-30 mph. I use the same 4.5 and 5.6 sails.

Glad you mentionned winging in 35 knots + wind is not what it's meant for. Not sure it's really clear for every winger I see strugling on the spot :p) (while windsurfing of course)

Totally agree with Robby. I always prefer windsurfing when it is above 25knots. It is simply not enjoyable anymore to be winging in stronger wind, just purely survival mode. It would be way cooler to jump some waves on a fsw or hit your new speed record with slalom gear.

Mahalo US1111! I recently picked up a used board that was once built and ridden by Johnny Heineken -- and the stance is super wide! I used to ride with my feet shoulder width apart, but I've adapted my stance and starting to get the hang of it, finally! Interesting how you drive your back knee behind your front leg -- I gotta try that!
@daversj
@daversj 3 ай бұрын
I’m amazed his knees can survive that stance. I was a windsurfer and the pounding always aggravated my knees. Switched to kite and foil….the foil seems stress them more than the surf kiting because of the constant balance and weird positions or twisting at the knees. I wonder if he’s on his original knees or an aftermarket set.

I would just rigg down and get a smaller board and foil and go gliding on the high wind swells instead of windsurfing. Ha ha, windsurfers dont glide for long...

Robby made total sense when it comes to struggling in really windy conditions with small twitchy wings rather than large wings in moderate winds. Perhaps it’s my age, similar to his. Love my winging though and makes me feel young again 🤙

How would windsurfing speed compare to wingfoiling speed in these conditions? Definitely seems like there's a crossover point where the windsurfers will be faster. I can't speak for windsurfing, but it does seem like the wheels start to fall off at speed from speed wobbles when foiling. Do you think that's a gear issue? It does seem to be that the bottleneck is maintaining stability and control of the foil. I subconsciously let off the accelerator. Curious if that's just inherent to a foil moving underwater such that it's fundamentally less stable at speed and that will always be the case when comparing wingfoiling to planing on the surface as in windsurfing?
