Come with me on a blasting downwind run from Hookipa beach park to Kanaha. Ride along in some strong winds and choppy seas.

I kitesurf now as well but there is nothing like that feeling of blasting along on a windsurfer trying to get every ounce of speed out of the sail and the board. The connection you have to the sail is much closer than to the kite.

@chrisdickinson4576
@chrisdickinson4576 3 жыл бұрын
@@s2oooo I mainly kite hydrofoil and although it is my favourite water based activity of all time, you are totally disconnected from the water and wind compared to windsurfing. How fast you go just depends to a large part on your kit and how crazy you are :) On a windsurfer I remember feeling like every little adjustment I made to the sail and board made a difference.

Thanks for being a true inspiration.

I had so much fun at the Gorge from the mid 80s to late 90s. Bettes for breakfast a session at the Hatch or Dougs then The River City Saloon for the Moe Show is he was playing that night oh and a couple Scorpions at Jack first, I worked 4 x10hrs so every weekend was long weekend so I drove down from Vancouver BC every weekend. The one time I hit a turtle, it broke my fin off. Didn't do it on purpose, just assumed the turtle would get out of the way. Tough lesson trying to sail back in with out a fin. After that, I always gave turtles a wide berth. Awesome video, what a ride along. As a rather mediocre windsurfer, I'm amazed that Robby Naish feels more comfortable unhooked when in powerful gusts! All the windsurfing he does, must have a tremendously strong grip & arms.

Mr. Naish, that was awesome. In 2017, I visited Hookipa Beach because I wanted to see surfers. Once I got there, I saw the surfers and the kitesurfers first. But it's the windsurfers that stole the show. I don't practice any of these sports but I could certainly appreciate the skill level necessary for the speed and the jumps involved. I'm sure I watched for 20 minutes straight, trying to follow one sail, then another. It was mesmerizing. I'm glad the random algorithm of KZbin suggested this awesome video so that I had a chance to see what they saw. Thanks. .

I learnt to windsurf in 1981, and ended up with a suite of boards from a Windsurfer One Design to a great Mike Davis (local surf and wave board shaper) sinker. I was around when fully battened then rotating cuff sails came in. Never particularly talented, but as a teenager and early 20s it was what I loved doing. Life, a profession and family, and I drifted away. Gave that Windsurfer to a mate a couple of years ago after no use for about 15 years (he and his kids use it!). Watching this makes me think “time to give it another go”. Thanks RN.

Windsurfing San Francisco bay and the CA coast through the golden age of the 90s were the greatest years for me and my friends. I windsurfed from 1984 to 2016 at which time I would be almost unable to walk for a week afterward due to the enlarged bone spurs in the big toes. So I moved to Baja and learned to kiteboard at age 64, now 68 and my feet no longer hurt, it's a very relaxed kind of stoke! Learning to kite from windsurfing is tough at first because you try to over muscle it resulting in stupid launches. When you learn to totally relax and chill, hands close together on the bar, sheet out you will get it! Saw you Robby, 1987 or so in the world cup race at SF. You said hi and nodded like you knew me, that's stuck with me, thanks!

Love your input on gear choice and why you choose this setup. Soo often we get wrapped up in wanting the fastest or most efficent possible setups and overlook what we loose in doing so. That was what happened to me in the mid 90's going to extreme on board and sail choice. Its was blazing fast but soo technical and god help you if your luff filed with water in a 6 cam sail. To me as a pilot, higher L/D just rocks efficiency-wise, meaning higher aspect ratio wings, or in this case, sails. It's also telling the drag of the windsurfing board (we call it parasitic drag) at speed must be much less than the foil boards, as top speeds continue to be ~50% higher than foils. Again watching how little (or none at times) of Robby's board is touching the water at speed, makes perfect sense. Thanks for the video Robby!

I'm very happy to see a windsurfing video from Robby in the middle of the wing fashion. I fully agree with him, in terms of looking always for fun in windsurfing, no matter is slalom or wave sailing. Bigger sail sizes IMO is been an important reason for people to leave windsurfing. I always saw Robby's point of view of slalom without camber was much more interesting than only pure beast strength and weight. I remember the in and outs through the sets

Hey Maui 1994 I was a Nash & North sails fan love it sailing from Kanaha to Hookipa racing my buddies upwind and then here comes Robbie Nash smoking us all what a speed demon. I always thought I was going fast until Robbie pinching up wind blew by us all....

Hello Robby, I am from 63 as you and appreciate you for a long time. I was yesterday on the beach of Pont Mahé, Assérac Brittany, France, a good wind, force 5 or 6, and about 100 women and men having great fun with their boards. Friendly and warm greetings from south Brittany. I wish you the best, have fun !

I’m 57 and have been in awe of Mr Naish since I started windsurfing in 1986 , still windsurfing , haven’t tried kiting or foiling yet , I believe in keeping windsurfing simple , which in turn makes it more fun , the sails are so good now you don’t need the aggravation of cambers , will be glad when more Naish boards and sails are available , everything is sold out right now

Thx for the ride. :D Reminds me of my time on Maui. Kanaha was my go to spot in those days.

Dude, i missed seeing you by 2 days in Kefalos, Kos...in the late 90's...anyway...sweet rig, and the speeds were mind blowing. 5.4 looked awesome. I use to prefer a smaller board. I kite now. But, its off season in Langebaan, SA and you just got me stocked to go back to my first love...windsurfing. Btw the first time i rode one of your boards, in Kefalos, Kos, i went out and rode straight back and told the guy i needed to buy that baord. Thanks for making ALL our windsurfing sooooooo much better dude. Aloha from South Africa.

Hi Robby! Ich finde es gut, dass Du die üblichen Pfade verlässt (Wave vs Slalom) und den Spaß am Windsurfen wieder in den Mittelpunkt stellst!-)
