I was in the same boat as you for my Xterra. It just gets to a certain point where you realize you put more money into your Xterra that it's actually starting to hurt your pocket book and mental health. I have gone to Autozone, O'Reillys,NAPA, Amazon Automotive, Ebay Motors, Pick-your-parts, Nissan OEM and Etc and etc on keeping my Xterra on the road and going but it started to wear me down to the point where I was keeping phone numbers of moblie mechanics and tow trucks near or at the arenas I was going to take me to the closest mechanic. Every morning I worried that my car won't turn on when I need it to take me to school, work and my home. So after a prolonged diagnostic process, I just decided to sell it off and get a new car instead. It was a difficult decision to make but It was one that was needed., but I was always nostalgic when I see one out on the road.
@XterraRob Жыл бұрын
I hear you man. That was part of my consideration too. I fixed a lot of stuff the last two years I owned it, but I got to thinkin that breaking down on the side of the road by myself is annoying...but I wanted to avoid that with a kid in the back seat. I definitely got my moneys worth of a AAA membership (a few years back, my wife and own owned 3 old cars and we just played whack a mole as we broke down and fixed one, then the next one, etc).

I briefly considered a 2nd gen Xterra to stay on brand for youtube so my internet friends wouldn't leave me :D I also considered an older frontier that I could swap my lifts over from the Xterra to the truck...but just didn't solve the lack of creature comfort for a family. The new Frontier was on the list at one point too, but the Tacoma just spoke to me (and millions and millions of other people that buy it I guess...)

Sorry to see your Xterra go. Like you say, life changes. My Gen 1 Xterra remains as my weekend and trail ride. For doing useful things my Silverado with an 8' bed does the rest, owned by my business. Neither is comfortable so I'm looking for an Old Man Car for long drives in comfort and style. I avoid buying cars newer than 05 because it seems build quality across the auto industry went downhill from there. My 01 Xterra and 01 Silverado are bomb-proof and gremlin free. Buying tip from a client who sells used cars: do not buy anything made during the pandemic years. All of the production stoppages due to supply chain problems have lead to vehicles full of electrical gremlins.
@XterraRob Жыл бұрын
I hear ya man. I kept the x about six months after I got the Tacoma. Problem was since I had the option of a nicer and newer vehicle, the X Sat in the garage on a battery charger and rarely got used. I specifically went for the TRD off road model for the diff lock and 4 Dr short bed so it could be best if both worlds. Crossing my fingers that the electrical gremlins don't show up!
@Bigislandguy Жыл бұрын
First off congratulations on being a dad and getting married. 🎉 🍻 I feel like I’m at that point with my X. Did you sell your xterra yet? I can’t afford new tires and a $425 grassroots link right now. But if I can get the OD of the bearings on a grass roots link, I’m capable of modifying my old center link.
@XterraRob Жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Yeah...it is sold and gone. The grassroots links cuts off the end of the stock centerlink and weld on a tube...so the bearing just matches the tube they choose. I have seen people modify the stock link by just hammering out the ball joints and studs, drilling the taper out and then using a sleeve bearing and a bolt. Similar to grass roots, just without the welding.

140,000 on my 1 gen Xterra se 4x4 and in excellent shape ! wont be selling her anytime soon ! one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned and funniest 4x4s with very little maintenance needed. Would never spent 40 - 50,000 on a new rig waste of money and dont want payments, that money better off going into my investments. For the money spent on a new rig you can completely rebuild a new gen 1 xterra 3 times ! but I understand the draw to something new fun and exciting. Cheers !

Solution: Keep the Xterra and buy a 2wd prickup for cheaper for your truck needs. You'll regret selling the X. Plus, you wont get much money for it compared to all the work you put in. Before my X I had a Bronco II that I sold for many of the same reasons, and I really really wish I hadn't sold it, and now good Bronco IIs are almost impossible to find.
@XterraRob Жыл бұрын
That was one of many options I had considered! I kept the Xterra for 6 months at the same time as the Tacoma but it mostly just sat in the garage on a battery charger. I sold it for 4k and rolled that into tires, lift, bumper, etc for the Taco. No regrets yet but time will tell.
@spydahed808 Жыл бұрын
Why did you choose a tacoma over the new frontier? I love both trucks. Just curious
@XterraRob Жыл бұрын
I could make a whole video on my decision making process...but basically I always liked the Tacoma. I really liked the new frontier too but was hesitant to buy a first model year of a new design. The attractive part of the older frontier was you could get similar utility for less money. 4dr short bed pro-4x vs Tacoma TRD off road would be a several thousand cheaper...but the trade off was an older interior style. With the new refresh design the price went up and a new Pro-4x was about the same as a new TRD off road. I was also looking to buy used... about 2 years old so the frontiers were still too new for the user market to have much.

I owned the Tacoma and Xterra for about 6 months before moving the Xterra on. It sat int he garage on a battery charger collecting dust. When I have the option to drive my nicer vehicle (which also had 4WD)...I never chose the Xterra. I sold the Xterra to use that money to roll into lift, tires, and armor for the Tacoma. It didn't make sense to keep the Xterra around to take it to Uwharrie 3 times a year when I can do that with the Tacoma.
@tonykartracer80328 ай бұрын
New cars are overrated, overpriced, and only sold to suckers (given their value drops in half once off the lot). There are better ways to spend your money than to get a $70K Tacoma off the lot. Just get a 2nd Gen Xterra if you want that 'newer' feel in car with a bit more creature comforts. Now, don't get me wrong.... of course it's nice to have a new car, but like I said, there's better ways to be spending money as it is a bad investment.
@XterraRob8 ай бұрын
My Tacoma was 2 years old when I bought it...let the first owner take the first shot of depreciation. Vehicles are depreciable assets. I definitely didn't buy it as an investment.
