If students do the relevant readings before they go to class, then what is being presented would have an inkling of familiarity. However, most students go to class to be taught, and new material is not absorbed on the first presentation, so everything they have heard for the first time seems like gibberish. If they develop the habit of reading ahead, they will see how easy it is to understand the new material that is presented.
