It was a crap alibi, but given how much reasonable doubt existed, it probably made little difference. As Dr. Grande, I think he killed her, but I agree that the evidence was well short of beyond a reasonable doubt. Even the first mistrial was very nearly an acquittal, at 11-1 for acquittal.

Really, these Easter eggs pokes are ALWAYS a complete surprise. But what puts the Grande brand on the poke is it's something somebody else, (all of us) thought and shoulda said, but didn't and it's "Welcome to the Monkey House", "Anything Goes", i.e., the menagerie of all his case-videos. With the overriding current state of relativism existing so much as it does, politix and our American culture of 'freedom (ab)use', accommodation and cancellation, in science, specifically psychology, the social sciences, history, religion, morality etc. so much so that sane and insane are so indefinite, incomparable, indistinguishable as well as healthy and unhealthy, good and bad, right and wrong and true or false. Grande's humorous roadside bomb delivery is well-needed comic relief; dark humor, though always tasteful, characteristically of the peerlessly-hilarious type condemned prisoners or such share among themselves while waiting for the inevitable coming shock. For example, a guard offers a condemned prisoner a cigarette before execution and the dude replies, "No thanks, Tryin' ta quit."

Klove 5343 -Oh yeah. Robert Blake made no secret of his mental health problems, even in the 70s. It was a virtual bragging point with him. As an actor, it obviously appealed to his drama king vision of himself as a dangerous tough guy. I would have voted guilty on that jury.

Actually, Dr. Grande, Bobby Blake was not only a physically beautiful child, but was a darned good child actor. Just watch his performance in "Humoresque" (1946), playing John Garfield's character as a child. He conveys a very touching sensitivity which breaks your heart. Signed, a lifelong film aficionado.

* Fun little Blake fact My father was a Creative Director for an Advertising Agency. He was friends with many known actors and was having dinner with Jack Palance one evening when Robert Blake approached the table and sat down. Robert started blabbering about none sense as Jack just looked around not paying attention as if Blake was not there. Robert realized he was persona non grata and swiftly left the table. My father said, “What’s that about?” and Jack just shook his head and then gave my father this look. At that moment my father understood that Robert Blake was not welcomed by many in the film industry. (This was prior to the murder)

Interestingly, Gary Busey played a Robert Blake like killer on "Law & Order," inspired by this case. Except in the show, he was found guilty. Which did not throw the Busey character off all that much, because he thought he had a shot at a reversal. Because of....acting, so will not be denied his comeback.

Makes Blake's role in _Lost Highway_ all the more creepy. BTW - could you analyze _Lost Highway?_ Not the kind of film you probably like, but it has a heavy psychological angle. The main character kills his wife, goes into a psychogenic fugue state (according to the filmmakers), and then becomes someone else and begins living an alternate life - until his old identity and memories of his crime begin bleeding through the fantasy. It's radically subjective, told from the protagonist's POV, so that what's happening in his mind seems to be happening in reality - which confused the hell out of most audience members. I'd love to see your take on it.

Another thing of possible interest, since Dr. Grande knows his guns: in _Lost Highway,_ Robert Blake’s character kills someone with a Desert Eagle chambered for .357 magnum rounds. Blake is a small guy - only 5’4”. Just…picture that. The gun is almost as big as he is.

I don't think, that there are any more short people compensating by trying to take charge or otherwise be in control, than the average person might do. I think, that they just stand out more, because it does seem strange, perhaps because of evolution or preconceived notions, for a smaller person to be in charge. Perhaps in sort of a primative way, it's only natural for a bigger person to be in charge, so a smaller leader stands out like a sore Tom Thumb!

Why would someone just walk up to a complete stranger and shoot them, without motivation, and not take anything!? I understand that Bonnie had quite a few jaded lovers, but the most jaded lover would be the one who felt trapped (the pregnancy), and was with the victim.

I've always liked Robert Blake since I was a child watching Our Gang. Some years ago about the time his book My Life as a Rascal came out he put his poetry on his website. I found it very interesting and we had some interaction about it. I was sad when he had money troubles he took it down. I felt it was a rare healthy outlet for him. I've always felt like he was a tortured soul who had gone through a lot and was largely misunderstood. At times it seemed he became his movie and tv personas. I don't know if he did this terrible thing or not but I want to believe he did not.

I agree with Dr. Grande. Blake finally found a hit man to get rid of his wife, Bonnie, because she was going to take his beloved daughter away from him. She actually wouldn't live with Blake, but stayed in a cottage house next to his on his property. I have no doubt she was planning to leave with the child and he got desperate. The "forgot my gun in the restaurant" excuse (when no one saw him come back to the restaurant) was planned for a certain time, and he purposely parked the car in a certain back alley, so the hit man could kill Bonnie and he could get sole custody of his little daughter.

That case has always bothered me profoundly. It almost feels personal and I don't know why because nothing like that has happened to me or anyone I am close to. I have an MA in History, and the only thing I can think of is that it is the same type of behavior that occurred in more famous atrocities with multiple victims, an underlying collective agreement that "they" are not human so it doesn't matter. Meanwhile perpetrators live everyday lives. People came and left that house every day, and no one reported that a girl was being tortured until it was much too late.

I always thought Robert Blake was guilty. Leaving his gun inside the restaurant and his wife outside in the car when he went in to retrieve it (and the very short amount of time that took) didn't leave much room for someone else to murder her.

What she did to Christian Brando was cruel. She was not a nice woman. Blake must have hated her so much that he only started crying and getting upset when the cops lied to him and told him that she would survive. That must have been a horror for him. I loved the show Beretta which used to come on BBC1 on Thursdays at about 10pm after McCloud. Also we would catch Top of the Pops at 7:30pm. For some reason, Thursday TV was much better than Saturday nights.

I just wanted to add an informational clarification. BATFE estimates there to be 50,000-125,000 P38 Walthers in America as WW2 bring backs or USGI bring backs even into the 1960's. In other words, soldiers stationed in Berlin and other parts of Germany and Austria were able to acquire P38's and bring them home. The Bund continued to require the weapon and Walther produced post War P38's. The P38 frame material was changed and some small updates were made to the pistol- the P38 was rechristened the P1. The Bund then began selling off P38 surplus to other NATO countries and even South America and Africa. The gun associated with killing Bakley has a P38 frame and serial range but it actually had a number of P1 parts on them. When the P1 finally began to be retired from use by the Swiss, German, and Austrian police forces, P1's and P38's inundated the surplus market. PW Imports in Washington State brought in 25,000. Southern Ohio guns brought in close to 80,000 units from 1980 until their 2017 closure. In the military surplus firearm bins, P1's and P38's are still being found at businesses like CAI @ DelRay Beach FL. Many P38's and P1's and hybrid parts mixtures between the two were sold in California by Golden State Arms, National Ordnance, and Federal Ordnance out of South El Monte CA. It is a very common handgun. At the time Bakley was killed, SOG was selling both P38 and P1's for $275 with a holster- you could get one in poor condition for $225 to your FFL. The front sight can be removed fairly easily and then threaded for a supressor adapter so to this day, these guns are popular for hits. While Bakley was not killed with a surpressed P1/P38, I think you can read behind the lines at what I am getting at. 10 husbands, the Brando family in the mix, and Robert "Wirehead" Blake in the mix. A perfect storm.

Bravo!!!! This was a work of art Dr Grande!! I watched this case intently. I’d grown up knowing Robert Blake from the Our Gang shows through to Beretta. He had a sort of charm that made me want to root for him in his career. But the murder changed all that. He probably did have a really tough life. It’s a shame he couldn’t turn it around or find the help he needed to address his issues. The trial was pretty bad. More like prat falls than court proceedings. It was an exposure of some unsavory characters for sure. It said something about Blake’s lifestyle and life choices too.

It's interesting that he'd seen specifically little horned creatures because that's a very common Eastern European expression to describe Delirium tremens, "to drink oneself to imps/to seeing green imps", after a popular description of hallucinations that one experiences during alcohol withdrawal or some other form of alcoholic delirium. Imps in Easter European christian folklore are usually small horned creatures, often described to be of green color.

To me, it's obvious Blake is guilty (not to mention mentally troubled and resentful), but there wasn't quite enough evidence to convict. I remember the trial, and character assassination of Bonnie was huge both there and in the media. Week after week in the tabs there were stories about her; you'd think not only she was the killer, but she had also been tried and convicted. Obviously, Bonnie's character was irrelevant, but I think it created an atmosphere that influenced the jury.
