I've been drumming for over 35 years and have worked with Siouxsie Sioux, Peter Gabriel, Simple Minds to name a few, and one of the reasons I started playing music to begin with was Gary Numan.
The other day I stumbled across a KZbin interview with the drummer Cedric Sharpley who played drums in Garys band from 1979 to 1992. This included the glory years from 1979 to 1981 when Gary was one of the biggest pop stars in the world, introducing a new synth pop sound that influenced everyone from Prince to Nine inch Nails. Unfortunately Cedric passed away in 2012 but I felt that I would like to do this video as a thank you for the great grooves and inspiration that he gave me as a young upcoming drummer.
BIG thanks to ‪@livingornamentsinterviewsb2925‬ for that great interview and all the others with alumni from the various musicians from Garys bands. Your channel is amazing and I hope that you can keep adding more interviews along the way.
For details of my drum masterclass in Frome on Monday the 20th November 2023:

I was a heavy metal guy through and through when I discovered Gary's music. I bought Replicas on a whim after seeing the album art. I was so intrigued I had to invvestigate. It was like nothing I'd ever heard before. Headphones were mandatory. He still sounds amazing todaay as well.

Lovely tribute to Ced, thanks for posting this. Like you, I fell for Ced's drumming immediately I heard Airlane - the first album I played along to, to try to teach myself kit. Observer was my favourite lick with the sixteenth double on the snare. The production on Pleasure Principle was so good and Ced's drums are so well recorded. His drumming was tight but funky, brought a wonderful soul to the overall sound. I've often wondered who the other drummer drummer was at the audition - Gary's said he was hopeless and Ced was a bit kinder and said the other guy "struggled" The interview was the only time I ever heard Ced speak, lovely voice and you could hear his playful tone. He was definitely top of the three drummers who influenced me playing: others were Brian McGee (Simple Minds) and in a nice Siouxsie link, Budgie, especially on Kaleidoscope. And yes, the Ced Sharpley Drumming Bursary is still going on at Ashlyn's School

Cedric was also a founder member of 70s prog band Druid. They made two albums - 'Toward the Sun' and 'Fluid Druid'. Just prior to Druid's demise, I bought (their keyboard player) Andrew McCrorie Shand's Minimoog - so got to meet the band. Cedric said he had something big in the pipeline - but was unable to discuss it publicly. We now know what that gig was! In whatever musical genre he played, Cedric was indeed an excellent, underrated drummer.

@@HenriLefebvre-ls2xz They are not forgotten! All very talented musicians. I often wonder what became of Dane and Neil. Andrew went on to have a great career - a stint with Curved Air, and of course as the composer for the Tellytubbies!

@@Nick.Magnus I agree with your comment maybe Druid were just to late in the prog field. I also have a great album by a fine band called Autumn, think you might have heard of them, just wish it was a little longer.

@@ancientmusketeer6564 Glad you like Oceanworld! Autumn was also way too late in the prog field, but we got it out eventually, 22 years later! Thankfully prog is still going strong, and independent artists like me can make records without having to grovel to record companies any more. 😉

I am fortunate to have a bit of memorabilia - including my ticket for Wembley Arena 27 April 1981. Bloody Hell, nearly 43 years ago. Tubeway Army "blue album", The Plan, Replicas, Telekon, The Pleasure Principle, Inexplicably - the band I have the most music for is "Jethro Tull". But Gary Numan is a close second, along with Green Day. Thanks for posting this - it was a fantastic blast from the past!

Ceds drumming to me had a subtlety to it which went under the radar of the synths, but once you listened to it in isolation it gave the songs so much depth

Amazing to discover you and your sentiments and how intensely you studied this period of Gary Numan especially as a drummer, as I can completely relate: the only exception is that I was about age 11 when an English daily series broadcast at 7 PM every evening in Connecticut “Video concert hall” proceeding MTV by a couple of years, First started broadcasting down in the park, which was likely pinched from the film “urgh! A music war” I would discover many years later. My love for the princess pleasure, principal and tell God Todd inspired me to check out what preceded those records.

Hi, Fold linen or a towel on a flat surface and wash your vinyl with a weak solution of lemon Ecover washing up liquid (the best option) using a hand towel, flannel, something linen in generally circular motion following the grooves, the Ecover solution should be weak enough to not leave any residue (one of the reasons Ecover cuts it). Dry the vinyl similarly with towelling or linen and play through in case there's anything left in the grooves that needs lifting (if especially grooted). You've probably done your label too, so that'll look a little brighter, in any case, no harm done, only kindness.. Enjoy. 😎\m/

Thanks for this. If you have the time and inclination, would be good if you did a second part with you playing along and breaking down the drum parts you’ve mentioned here. Maybe also demo the LM2? Btw one of Ced’s old kits is owned by the drummer of tribute act, “Liquid Engineers” which he uses on stage. Worth checking them out.
