I honestly thought that I was the only one who was secretly annoyed with this announcement. I really was hoping that they would give someone else a chance to be an actor to play the part, instead of recasting the same people and bringing in already well-known actors. HBO does it all the time, and their actors end up being popular and successful because of it. Well, what’s done is done. We’ll see how this will turn out in the end.

Same with Wolverine...Logan was the best way Hugh would exit the character. Again, as a very cheap attempt to exploit the nostalgia and get a buck from older fans, they had to drag him back into that character...If they needed a new Wolverine, Taron Egerton was right there! I’m guessing in the minds of the Marvel bosses they tried new things (for example Eternals) and those films underperform. But when they give us nostalgia and cameos the audience eats it up. Marvel is at a low point and so they’d rather cast an actor who elicits nostalgia and is a proven box office success in their old films than change things up. MCU should have closed the chapter of The Avengers with Endgame & used new phases to build up X-Men as the new main ensamble team while Fantastic Four replaces Guardians as the family oriented team. They've been so directionless that they can't help themselves but make more uninspired decisions. I'm relieved I'm not the only one who thought this was the dumbest announcement and decision. Victoria Alonzo must have been the one with the brains at Marvel Studios. This is just lazy. This guy already had a decade's worth of films built around him, move on ffs. But it's their own fault, they want to add diversity and then sit on a fence when sections of their fanbase reacts badly with racism, sexism, and homophobia. Instead of dealing with that, and the fact that they apparently want to hand those new characters to the most inexperienced writers (and that it makes no sense not to have a new Avengers team pushed for immediately; this is where they should have kept Monica Rambeau as OG Captain Marvel snd leader of the Avengers, and saved Secret Invasion for after Secret Wars, but I digress. And these new characters should have been interacting with each other instead of in separate headliners - maybe use the D+ shows for some of that?) they go back recycle their 'greatest hits'. It won't beat the 'past their prime' allegations, and all because they can't deal with the real areas they're failing in. I'm no longer excited. It is what it is, I guess. I actually like Phase 4 but what was the point of it in hindsight? They killed off good characters every film just to get the Phase 5 and suddenly go "psyche" every time the prospect of killing off a yt guy character (who is probably overdue on that front) comes up. It's like emotional whiplash. Instead of making their Phase 4 concepts and execution better they ran back to this, which will make it invariably hard to move on from in the long term. Maybe leave the diverse cast out of it they can't hold the line on their setups. They've just added a bunch of characters and then done nothing with them, before capitulating and canning most of them for 'reasons'. None of that is satisfying. Nevermind that trying to placate the worst parts of your fanbase isn't going to be the flex they think it is.

This actually happened in the comics. Victor was in Tony's body. In the multiverse, there is an Earth where Tony Stark and NOT Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four) was Doom's roommate in college. Unlike Reed and Doom, Tony and Doom actually learned to get along until Doom betrayed Tony and stole his identity and ... long story. I think the MCU is doing this story but will likely make some Hollywood changes. I think the Doom who stole Tony's identity (the most dangerous human villain EVER) will cross to the main MCU Earth and will probably cause all kinds of hell until someone like Reed Richards takes him out ... or the Doom of the main MCU Earth confronts him. Or the alternate Earth's Tony Stark steps in! I think this is going to be a FANTASTIC ride (because you know Reed and the FF will have to show up sometime). We should be patient IMO and not simply conclude that Feige and company have lost their minds... bet they're laughing at everyone freaking out. Anyway, it was a good story in the comics. I just hope (with the inevitable Hollywood tweaks and changes they'll make) that it will be an equally good ... or even BETTER ... cinematic tale.

RDJ is a good actor, but the reason he was so great as Iron Man was because the role fit him to a tee- the same can not be said for Dr. Doom. You can not convince me that RDJ comes to mind when you’re thinking of actors who can pull off the danger and menace of Doom. I feel like y’all are giving these execs wayyy too much credit. Based on their actions in recent years, it’s much more likely that the studio execs were thinking about capitalizing on nostalgia bait and they were lucky enough that there’s a story in the comics that makes it work. I really hope that they do follow this storyline and that RDJ and the movie are great, but that doesn’t change that this decision has desperation written all over it

I agree they should have started over after endgame... I understand they had just gotten the rights to xmen and fantastic 4 back but you were never going to be able to explain their absence without a cheesy trope like the multiverse..... Marvel doesn't know what they're doing.

thank you for saying this. so many circlejerks on how it's amazing he's back. it's so lame. it's such a sellout cause past phase has been lacklustre and they wanna bring back old fans loyalty with familiar faces to say "hey, we're still the studio you guys remember". i think they experimented too much for shareholders likings so they have to scrap the "clean slate" plan for phase 5 and beyond.

It makes sense and I think that its been planned for some time. MCU Stark created the Time Platform, as Doctor Doom did, MCU Stark created an army of sentry robots, as did Doctor Doom. Both lost their parents very young but the difference, and what makes them different characters, is that Tony Stark deferred to AI and struggled with how to protect the world, and Doctor Doom has complete convictions in his own actions which is why all Doom bots only enact the will of Doom. They are a distorted reflection of each other, but allows RDJ to do something compelling.

Victor Timely and Kang are completely different, from personality, to technology available, fighting skills, etc. Kang is a conqueror, Timely is a salesman. but have parallel events in their lives. They are different people in almost every way. Same too for Stark and Doom. Different upbringings, values, paths of their life. But they ARE variants (In the MCU anyway) After watching Deadpool and Loki I still dont understand how people do not grasp this. I feel like after Secret Wars there will be a universe where they both coexist as two separate people, Avengers/X-Men and Fantastic Four

Variants does not mean they are the same person, and of course as comic readers we know they are not the same. But really its MCU Tony Stark that is the different one, who has made inventions that are actually Ant-Man and Doctor Doom in comic origin. I think its actually more accurate to say Stark is the variant to Doctor Doom, not the other way around.

Nobody gives a crap about alternate versions of characters. Marvel needed to make a proper adaptation of Dr Doom and the Fantastic Four. MCU cares more about being a multiverse nostalgia bait show than having good movies.
