According to, Never Sleep Again, (a documentary film about the series up until the remake) Wes Craven says that originally Freddy was supposed to be a child molestor but due to an unfortunate situation involving young kids, he decided to remove it bcuz he didn’t want to look like they were making money off a tragedy. There are many signs within the series that are hints of Freddy being this person. I guess 2010 was a long enough time to verbally and visually say it. It was visually mentioned in Freddy vs Jason with the Laurie nightmare sequence

Not saying it didn’t work, I really wish they were able to go further in their own direction with it. Too many scenes felt like re-shoots of the original. I liked the reboot when it first came out, but my feelings on it changed over time. The last time I watched it, I didn’t think it was very good. And surprisingly, it had nothing to do with them calling Freddy a child molester instead of a child killer. I think most of us assumed he was. I think it goes with the territory. But a lot of fans do hate it for that very reason. Fans can deal with Freddy murdering children, but sexually abusing them ruins him for them. I mean I get it. It makes him less funny/likable. But again, it goes with the territory. I don’t think Wes Craven intended Freddy to be likable or funny anyway. That was the sequels/other writers/directors/studio that turned him into a comedic pop culture icon.
