Me too as he was a good friend of another hell-raiser Trevor Howard. Keith Richards recalled the time he found out he was staying at the same hotel as the Rolling Stones, knocked on their door and shouted "THIS IS A POLICE BUST!" Terrified, the guys ended up spending the night smoking dope with the ultimate prankster Mitchum.

Mitchum wasn't actually kicked out of the house on bad terms with his mother at age 16, but rather had to leave because she, as a single mother raising three kids during the Depression, was simply too poor to care for all three and Robert (I believe) being the oldest was asked to leave so that the other three could survived, according to "Baby I Don't Care" a biography of his life. I can't be sure of all the details because it has been a few years since I read the book.

@@blackmore4 more like what he was smoking hahahahai liked michael parkinson and all his interviews but...... if you watch robert mitchum's face, his eyes and listen to his answers it is obvious to me that he treats michael as one who does not know the hardship he has encountered and how one deals with it - one either finds the irony or one is driven insane - if you don't laugh you go mad his answers are friendly sarcastic and he does it with the aplomb of one who knows that there are many people in the world who have an easier passage in life - who have not really felt the "slings and arrows of outrageuos fortune" as mentioned by a "famous" man who was a poor shoreditch man who, living in a small city, knew the human character, including kings and queens, like the back of his hand - including maybe that his writings would be attributed to all manner of famous people but not him - maybe mitchum in a previous life hahahaha - and don't be afraid to diasagree - i like to engage with people who have different ideas to me - comes from surviving the slings and arrows hahahaha

I first saw Mitchum in The Winds of War when i was 9 or 10. He was impressive. Did not know his prior work until years later when i became a true movie fan. One of the greats. More range than John Wayne, i would say. The comments about Cape Fear are dead on. I saw it some while after i saw the remake. The original was, not surprisingly, a little better in most areas. El Dorado is classic, as are so many of his films. Sadly, he had an alcohol problem like many of his generation, and it affected him later in life. Great man though

I wish he was more forthcoming and articulate. He'd have some great stories.

Mitchum is an extremely difficult interview, & I admire Michael Parkinson for persevering because Mitchum can be very funny & insightful. But Mitchum also doesn't suffer fools & he can be a bit of a bully, unfortunately, if the mood is upon him.

maybe not .....one is american, one is british. maybe its a little of not understanding each other....did you see how mitchum rolled his eyes a couple of times at what parkinson said. Its a pity ..theyre both great entertainers. I like parkinsons interveiws. hes done many good ones...esp the one with peter sellers...it was a laugh a minute...parkinson was sure enjoying himself.
