Roberta Metsola is the youngest ever President of the European Parliament. At The State of the Union 2022 in Florence, she talked to STG Director Alexander Stubb about her visit to Kyiv after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, her role as EP President, about Malta becoming member of the European Union and the 'Sisu' required in a political career.
'Sisu' is a Finnish concept describing grit and perseverance, a sentiment of never giving up. In the Sisu podcast series, STG Director and former Finnish Prime minister Alex Stubb meets politicians, entrepreneurs, scientists, activists, artists and sports people, to talk about their world views and how they made a difference.

Let's see if we can get the World Food Bank and the needy countries together to lease some non-EU/US ships and sail them to Odessa to load the grain. Maybe arrange UN cover for the ships and strongly advise the Russians to not shoot? We need to move that grain before it spoils. Too many folks are depending on it.

Roberta is a member of the European People's Party, a conservative orientation in the EU. Her grouping is responsible for the Fiscal Compact Treaty, which promised to streamline the welfare state by having countries sign up to a fiscal discipline treaty. Alex is also a member of a conservative oriented political party in Finland. So, they both would agree on basic public policy, being pro business and streamlining the welfare state through privatization. One could agree or disagree with their ideological orientation. What I find strange is that Finland is experiencing tremendous problems at the moment: poverty, rising prices, more restrictions on the unemployed, streamlining health services, nursing strikes because of poor pay, teacher strikes for the same reason, lack of funds in municipalities to fund public services well....Mainly because of neoliberal policies that have been embraced by all political parties in the Finnish parliament. But....Finland also lacks empathy for the more unfortunate members of their society.

Interesting. Is one in hand with the other health and poverty! We tend to bow to Scandinavia and Norden countries, not without reason, but if the eye is taken off the ball through misplaced liberalism (well possibly, I think) the societal structure begins to dismantle and wisdoms are lost. Openness is good, so long as someone keeps a tight reign on maintaining the well functioning status quo. Maybe empathy can be found, before it's too late to reverse these sad trends?
