This is exactly what I needed. I've been struggling so much with getting my puppy to drop the toy once he comes back. And every time I introduced a treat, he would stop caring about this game. I’m 46 years old & have never been an animal lover so to speak. Recently I took on an 8week old mini Maltese retriever (against the wishes of all but one other family member) so I knew I needed to train the puppy to avoid any backlash and cycles of tension as a result of the pup toileting inside, chewing others belongings, barking uncontrollably etc.. etc.. I’ve learned so much from your beautiful style of training Robert Cabral & I’m so greatful I found you. My pup “Cinnamon” 16 weeks now is Loved by all family members including myself & my husband we adore her & she adores us. My two teens absolutely love her & my 3 grandchildren love me to bits all the more because of the positive only experiences we have together with her. So happy to watch the Duane O Mator going nuts for the retrieve. This is the video I've been waiting for. It never occurred to me to use two balls . It seems so obvious now. My dog will do a perfect retrieve but loses interest after 1 or 2 reps. He loves the chase, but not the bringing it back bit. He also spits the ball on the approach so it lands at my feet. So I'll need to work on the hold separately. Thanks as always ! Time to sign up for the full length version.

The last video I watched had a commenter voice a problem I was also having. Their dog would go to the toy, pick it up, then drop it as they came back. The poster's answer to this problem was to "Try building some recall momentum first". Whatever that means was not described in chat nor the video. This video gave me a lot of good ideas to break down the retrieve, and especially to begin at the end, like he showed. Great video.

I guess I got lucky with my first lab, I would just ask her to do things and she just did it. I honestly did very little training with her and she was a great dog for 15 years RIP Chacha. I have a new lab and either I have changed something or I just had a very special dog regardless I’m having to learn to how to communicate with my new dog. Great video!

Really like how you show this trick with duane as my golden retriever is just like duane, sometimes tugging and not letting go, or sometimes brings the toy back but just drops the toy. Because duane makes mistakes and you correcting it and shaping the behaviour I get a real example of how to deal with the mistakes I or my golden retriever make learning this trick

This is really really awesome to see. I can handle gentle dogs with a few issues, but it's the boisterous ones I'm really struggling with. I'd love to see as many videos as possible with dogs who are highly distractable and untrained!

Oliver Estrada you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. I LOVE Mr. CABRAL. It's one year my Newfie has been going to a Puppy School but has NOT learnt to retrieve. She was not taught. I do all the OBEDIENCE training in my garden. She was 3 months when she started. I decided YESTERDAY 5th September to WATCH and LEARN from Mr. CABRAL. 650 Euros x 3 per year down the drain. My Newfie is a super sonic high speed dog. The trainer doesn't seem to be interested in her. 🥺 So I communicate NEGATIVE feelings. Mr. CABRALs videos cannot be compared to others, he is exceptional. 👍👍👍

I can't wait for it to be spring in NY and I can work on the hold and the backup(great idea and using harder to hold 2 toys seems like a good idea too), she values the toys higher then most of the treats I use. My puppy knows to chase, bring, and then a rough drop it. She drops it slightly away from me then comes and looks at me, sometimes she doesn't do it immediately and she circles me, she drops the toy and then snatches it...eventually leaving it so I will throw it. I was using the 2 toy method but it was rough when she was a puppy and sometimes she ends up with 2 of them because of her drive for frisbees. She does well with other toys but a frisbee shes insane for, and doesn't like to give them up, unless shes on a long line even then it can be sloppy especially in rougher weather. Due to winter I stopped using a long line and for some reason she found the line more fun then her regular toys to thrash and tug on when I hooked her back up to one in our yard. What a difficult GSD! We spayed her last week and shes recovering. It's all I can do to keep her from wanting to run and jump right now. Shes on a sedative too, and crated a lot. Shes overly social, and has a high drive... I wasn't expecting her drive to be so high.

i usually hear "dont use the command to often if the dog doesnt listen or it loses all meaning" you are the first person who says to use it often so the dog connects them, is it because learning is different from a dog who doesnt listen to a command that he should know?

I found out that every once and a while when he comes back, to hold a treat in one hand and have an empty palm on the other hand. My dog learned to drop his ball in my empty hand and get the treat from the other. Which made it much easier for me to teach him! Hope that helps out other people.

Hey Robert i have a 20 month old Dutch who has unreal drive, temperament and nerves and is at a pretty high level of training. As of recently he has started to become possessive with his ball when playing fetch and refuses to out as before he understood that once outed he would get a new prize. Do you suggest i go back to basics and work with 2 tugs with outing and immediately rewarding to remind him of the game? Could it also be that as of lately we play in the yard and I’ll take his ball right before he gets put away and so he’s avoiding ending the game by holding? Advise would help!

My lab is 19 months old and he is probably the only lab in the world who has no interest at all to chase balls. On the contrary he has very high drive for live preys (especially lizards). Is there a way to strengthen his drive for balls or I should leave him as he is? We have a lot of other games (like tug of war) we play so I don't especially mind. By the way my Bruno looks a lot like Duane.

How long do you recommend working with your dog per session or per day? 20 minute sessions? Once, twice, three times a day? My dog (12-month-old mutt, border collie mix), is so much better at retrieving now with a soft frisbee than she is with a ball (though she has improved greatly). With her squishy football, I end up playing tug of war with her over it. I never considered adding a second duplicate toy to help the training process. And I've seen conflicting advice about training for retrieving with or without treats. I will try your method with "hold" "bring," and "out," with the positive enforcement treats. Thank you!

Great video, I've always done it by teaching "out" first, then throwing toys first in a close perimeter and playing tug with the dog when he picks it, using the out to release and keep throwing further and further as he learns that when he returns the toy he gets to play tug. Later I will gradually lose the tug play and the game becomes the retrieve. I've done it intuitively as I have only had very tug driven dogs, is there a difference between teaching mouthy herders/pits/bulls and retriever types?

Robert, I am having issues with the hold, bring, out aspect of this training. When I instruct my dog to hold and I let go of the toy, he just runs away with it and will not come towards me as I back up. I try to be exciting to get him to want to bring to me, but that doesn’t seem to work. Any suggestions?

That's fine and all, but what do you do with a dog that doesn't bring the ball/toy/whatever back in the first place? My pup will chase after the ball, pick it up, carry for like 1 second, drop it and then return it to me. How do I get him to return it in the first place? I have a 2 and a half month old Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy. I know they are not natural retrievers but I would like to teach how to fetch. He has a high food drive which is great but also bad because he is so concentrated on the food that he barely sits still or focus on anything and that makes him frustrated when he isn't successful with the training and that makes him resort to biting and barking. 'out' is a short word ending in a consonant. dogs like very short words ending in a consonant (wait, sit,out,crate,stop, get, up, off,snack) and 1 word commands keep a person paying attention to the training and NOT talking English.

I have trouble teaching my border collie mix to bring his ball to my hand. He tends to drop it. I can’t motivate him with treats when his ball is around. He is highly focused on the ball anytime it is in sight. Food doesn’t entice him at all, even his favorite treats... how do I motivate him to bring it to my hands when he is not food motivated?
