My in laws do it horribly to the point where it’s a disservice to the dog. I feel so bad for him. He has no guidance, no structure, and they truly believe that is what’s best for him. They don’t even see that the insane barking at the door, the fearfulness about thunderstorms and new people is BECAUSE of their lack of structure and boundaries for him. He is just allowed to make every high arousal/stress poor decision that he wants and it just builds and builds. He is the most stressed out dog i have ever met. And on top of it all he is an understimulated labradoodle. He’s practically bursting at the seams with anxiety and aggression. It’s so hard to see but they don’t listen to the advice my husband and I provide:((

Painful to read the story here but thank you for sharing it because it illustrates perfectly how the absence of rules and structure leads to MORE anxiety, not less. The same is true for children, I think that's one reason responsible dog ownership helps children grow up to be solid, capable parents who know how to care for children well.

I would argue that people like him, love his dogs far more than those who refuse to train the dogs they have, saying they don't want to hurt the dog. In the long run, they hurt their dogs much, much more by not offering them a rich life, that training and socializing offer to a dog.

I am from Germany and I love the IGP dog sports and all other like French ring and everything other. In Germany we got a lot of stupid people, who cannot handle normal Dogs. They don’t unterstand, what we do. In my free time I consume every video of Bart and you. I learned a lot and I am thankful. The view on animals I learned from my grandpa and I will never forget that, to handle animals as animals not as humans. Thank you for the conversation, I hope we can bring the real dog sports back together.

People aren't only breeding softer dogs but weak nerved insecure dogs. Proper corrections from a prong collar with fear based reactivity and aggression when in public gave my GSD rescue confidence in me and herself. We can now walk with a martingale only, with zero reactivity, no pulling, no BS. She's a great dog now, but it took tools. Positive only would of been a death sentence for my girl, period.

@@janiearmstrong6981herm springer 2.25 in prong collar. Get several extra links to ensure it will. Make sure you put it on correctly. It should fit around her neck just under her ear set. It should not hang low or be loose. Then when you're walking her and she misbehaves or does not listen you do a quick snap on the leash. It distributes even pressure along the prong collar and it's much safer because it will not choke out her trachea. If that is not enough purchase an e-collar martingale systems is fantastic but learn how to use. You have to watch videos you have to teach her the correct behavior to do. When she misbehaves then you press the stim on the at the lowest level possible but one that she will respond to. When she responds with the correct behavior then you release the button so that she associates the stimulation with a bad behavior or unwanted behavior, and the release of the stimulation with a good behavior

Just had an argument with a dog trainer here on YT. She claims punishment is never needed and is old thinking. These people are crazy and only deal with soft mild mannered animals with issues that can be fixed in 10 minutes. She has no videos of difficult high drive dogs…just videos of her stuffing their face with treats and says voila! I have tried it for a couple of years. It has such a low ceiling and doesn’t fix real issues. Balanced with the right tools is the way to go. Thx.

This is one of the most interesting conversations I've heard in a long time - thank you for taking the time. Here in Denmark, there are 13 banned dog breeds. E-Collars are banned and pinch collars are only allowed to be 3mm. I have just read a brand new study from the Royal Veterinary College in London where they conclude that Cocker Spaniels are more aggressive than Rottweilers. They have studied more than 10,000 Cocker Spaniels

I trained both my standard poodles, starting at their age of 6 months, with a prong collar (here in Canada). Both were extremely well behaved, happy, sociable, and well adjusted for all of their 14.5 years of life. They loved when I put the collar on because it meant training and fun. Both were trained to stop, on the spot, when given the command. One day, I opened my front door and across the street my boy Caesar saw his best dog friend and bolted down the stairs. I yelled stop and he froze halfway down the stairs. At the same time a car was passing by. I don’t think giving him a cookie at the time would have saved his life, because his desire to play with his doggy friend was stronger than any treat I could have offered him. If used properly and ethically, all training tools should be used appropriately for the dog’s personality as well as the circumstances. It is my responsibility as their Mom to keep them safe and well balanced. Great discussion btw, thanks so much.

Thank you for this intelligent conversation . I am a full proponent of e collar use. I am also a full proponent of intelligent dog ownership. My newly turned one year old Dutch shepherd has had an E collar on him since about 4/5 months of age. I don’t think he felt a correction until about 6/ 7 months of age which was very ‘gently’ introduced. This tool will be integral to his continued training for real world situations. . He has never been given a treat to perform, only my approval , and then later a ball. He is a working dog, and he is treated as such. You will never see a happier, more loving, more willing to please dog than my Fury. He is sound hearted and able to navigate any environment without aggression. Please keep up your fight and your educational efforts! Thank you!

Learning how many Swedes pretty much hide in the woods to train their dogs how they want is... disheartening... ever since I moved here a month ago. I've pretty much taken to doing that, too. I get it, there are terrible dogs just about everywhere, but dogs in Sweden are /out of control/ and it's only a matter of time before we just lose the privilege of having dogs entirely. Can't even say we can have dogs if we wrap them in bubble wrap - I can't even put a door on my damn crate!
@dont.mind.me27
@dont.mind.me27 Жыл бұрын
That is unbelievable. I can’t even imagine banning crate doors, like wth? I’m all for letting dogs roam freely and be able to go where they please, but some things are an over reach. I don’t even know how you would raise a puppy without a crate. People humanize dogs way too much.

I lived in an apartment under people with a large dog that barked constantly. An e-collar stopped that. If they had not had the e-collar the dog would have ended up at the shelter. They had to eventually get their own house, anyway, which is the optimal solution for people with large dogs, imo. The dog was territorial which is unacceptable in a shared living space.

I believe E-collar training, when done responsibly, can be a life saver. I have trained one of my dogs, a well trained dog, who chased deer over a busy roadway because he wouldn't listen to my recall command when he was in chase mode. The e-collar training stopped this behavior quickly and I transitioned from electric pulse to vibrate and beeps and didn't have to use the electric pulse after that to get a recall from my dog immediately.

abandoning dogs or any pet because people can't deal with behavior and time commitments is far more abusive and cruel than a properly used e collar. The bans of e collars in Germany or any other country because of ignorant politicians is phooey. Frankly lazy people who do not want to visually supervise their dog use e fences and e no bark, yet a supervised dog with a remote collar not legal. Just plain illogical and based on emotions and not science.

1:23:00 yea there might be plenty of dogs/business to go around but the positive only are not very good trainers and more often then not can not produce the results they claim their ideology can, thus they have to demonize and handicap balanced trainers to compete on a results based scale. They need to pull down the effectiveness of balanced trainers because balanced trainers are so much more effective. So they must ban certain tools like E-collars, because an e-collar can teach a dog perfect recall within 1-2 sessions where as there positive only methods may months to years in some dog and lets be honest in most dogs it never works. they want the new normal to be their much lower standard

Great interview. I love my dogs.... I LOVE my dogs and because I love my dogs, I want them to be a good healthy weight, I want them to have boundaries and limitations, training, socialization so that they can also have some freedom and a full life. Way too many people out there claiming to love their dogs so much they just cannot correct the bad behavior, their dogs live small, closed in lives. Boring lives on the couch or in their yard or at the very best...at the end of a leash with little to no freedom. I also love my E-collars AND SO DO MY DOGS! When my dogs see their e-collars come out they get very excited. To them, the collar means they are going hiking or to the beach....something fun and free, off leash. Tools are only as dangerous or cruel as the person on the other end of the leash. Personally, I think people who ban tools are cruel, because a lot of dogs suffer for it. I have Tri-Tronics collars and now... Dogtra One mistake people make is thinking it is electrocuting dogs. It isn't. An e-collar SHOULD be a simple extension of your hand. Anything can be abused, if the person is abusive. Not all tools are for all dogs. It is a matter of knowing your dog, knowing how to properly use a tool and to be fair on all things.

Just one correction: If you want to be a dog trainer in Germany you do not have to go to a trainer school by "Martin Rütter" there are many professional schools for dog trainers and you can choose free. Prices vary but usually you have to put a good amount of money on the table to take these courses (from 2.5k € to 25k € - it depends). The license than is usually granted to you by your local veterinary office, sometimes with an extra examination of your knowledge theoretically and practically. It depends on your local veterinary office because they all handle this differently.

Pitbull history nerd here. Pitbulls were bred for more then just fighting dogs. Bears and bulls were the original targets in baiting type games as a farm test and hunting test in one. But they werent bred for needless aggression. Humans messed that up as well. Pitbulls should have intense people pleasing drive working drive decent prey drive and some guardian instincts. But primary drive should be peoppe pleasing. Dogs had ro be able ro be near dogs they were going to fight or had already faught and not be an issue till told to fight or placed in the ring. Same as bite work with dogs now adays and the old school style. Protection pitbulls were bred from the same lines and just had slightly more territorial natures and needed training. The hunting types more chase and catch drive. Fighting lines slightly higher aggression. You also have some breeders purposefully breeding badly aggressive animals as easier to train pitbulls or no training pitbulls for certain jobs.

Any recommendations for the best, most affordable e-collar for the basic owner/trainer? My boy needs help on recall.

It would be nice if ANY information of this type was provided in this podcast. Mostly it is just a lot of words and complaining, with a few interesting stories mixed in. It contains zero actionable information. If they want to save the e-collar, then educate to avoid misuse. This podcast was an enormous opportunity flushed down the drain. (Admittedly I didn't make it to the end because it was driving me insane.)

I am in Argentina. These people are trying to forbid buying and selling dogs. Dog breeders are being persecuted more and more, (instead of legislating and regulating , and persecuting puppy Mills). Now e collar, slip and prong collar, considered legally as animal cruelty, as well as bark collars. Any bigger than a toy breed are also persecuted as a potentially dangerous dog,. They are also going after horses, as they are not supposed to work either, pull a cart or being ride. Most people repeat as parrots whatever the media say, while they do own a pure breed dog. It is insane. At some point, we have to be able to unite globally and make more noise than what they do. Otherwise we are going to see the extinction of any domesticated animal.

Off leash -owner MUST HAVE RECALL. I never take my dogs to dog parks. We train in a duck park. My dogs are trained not to mess with the ducks and the untrained dogs can’t come cause they’re ducks everywhere. I am so grateful to be able to have a place to train. Private wild life area, but every once in a while , a ding ding owner comes and they let their untrained dog off the leash and they NEVER can call their dog back, but we keep training and my Mal is so focused-they leave, but sometimes their dog gets in my dogs face or tries to take his tug. They are so lucky my dog is trained neutral -I let the owners have it. They usually leave then. Thank God!!

They’re against e-collars yet they probably use devices for/on themselves all the time that do similar things. Of course the industry calls them “haptics”, instead of “shock”. I wonder how many of the naysayers to the e-collar use smart phones and smart watches without a second thought. Some people also equate this to Tens machines as well.

Thank you for an informative discussion. I think E-collars should only be in the hands of professional trainers because they are to often misused by lazy and/or wilfully ignorant owners, monstering trainers do say most of the dog problems are really owner problems. The other reason is the it is entirely possible to train dogs to high performance standards without the use of punitive training tools. How do you think sheep and farm dogs were trained in the good old days, long before electric collars, etc? Yes some would have used harsh methods but many trained their dogs without these and with humane methods. I spent a fair bit of time on family farms when I was a child and can attest to this.

The potential removal of domestic dogs from society would not make it past the lawsuits from veterinarians, pharmaceutical companies, dog food manufacturers and veterinarian colleges. There would be to much capital loss. I'm referring to the US.

I explained to my trainers the Pac-Man game, if sometimes Pac-Man would win when the ghosts were not blue we would keep trying, to the dog it becomes a game that to us can seem cruel, for my purposes it is. If every time you try the game the ghosts go straight to you very fast, surround and kill you then F the game and you don't waste time playing. The game was a great model for examining the theories and ideals.

Perhaps the game explanation might follow with the ideal called the Pact-Man game. Make a pact with the dog and do not break it, dogs are like that; look at their loyalty.
