I did the glove test on my 06 V70 and the glove completely filled up. In what I saw and read, NOBODY mentioned that the test should be performed with a warm engine on a level surface. I did the test with the engine cold and the front jacked up a foot or two. So we'll see how it does when I test it right. I also never heard about compression (rings) being something to check before spending $500 and a LOT of effort on a PCV overhaul. "Everything you need to know" is right! Grateful again. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I was also on the fence about genuine Volvo vs aftermarket. You answered that one for me as well!

You are correct about aftermarket parts. I got Rein brand for the crankcase hose and the elbow hose. The top hose split in half at the seem after 2 months so i had to use aluminum tape to reseal it and the elbow hose is starting to ooze oil. I used Oetiker clamps for the job and not the worm clamps. I would have to redo the hoses and also install a catch can while the IM is off.

Hey Robert I have a Volvo v40 2000 1.9t. The car passes glove test when warmed up at idle. However, I’m thinking it is failing under load. I say this because my crankshaft seal keeps blowing out and giving me a large oil leak. When I replace the seal it was fine for a few hours of driving and then today I put more load on it and drove it a little harder and then bam again another oil leak coming from the main engine pulley. I replace the oil pump gasket and o ring as well. All Volvo parts. I replaced the pcv 40k miles ago. I’m thinking I need to drop the oil pan and clean out the ports especially the one that deals with the turbo or higher pressure. Is there any other tests I can do before I start this job? Thank you so much for everything. Your videos have really saved my Volvo.

Hi Robert! Thanks for the video, very enlightening. I've just cleaned out the PCV system (box and associated lines) on my 2003 XC90 2.9 T6, and a fair load of crud came out. Put it all back together and the car is running better than ever, but after a short drive I've noticed it's quite smokey and there's a bit of oil on the floor 😒 Before I take it back apart to find out what it may be, do you mind if I ask what you would check first? Thanks very much ☺️

I don't know how you can clean it, it should be replaced. Probably has an old part now leaking on the bottom of the oil trap and something loose.

I cleaned the nipple and replaced the brittle line attached to it. Like I say, it's running awesome... But it's blowing a fair bit of smoke out the exhaust and I had a bit of oil. But, as you mentioned the bottom port may not be sealed properly, so I'll take the intake manifold off again and see what I can find. Would you have any suggestions on how to clear the bottom port going into the block without dropping the oil pan please? Thanks Robert.

Thanks, the video is very informative. I checked my PCV using the glove test, and there is a lot of vacuum. I am trying to figure out a problem on my 2004 non turbo V70. It makes a high pitched whistling sound after it warms up. The sound happens while idling or light throttle. I got a surprise when I did the glove test. The whistling sound stops when the oil filler cap is taken off! I guessing there is some sort of vacuum leak somewhere. I don't see any broken or loose hoses. Do you have any diagnostic advice please? Thanks in advance.
@RobertDIY3 жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% sure on that model, but Volvo changed the system close to that year and the system goes bad and creates to much vacuum. Does the sound go away when you pull the oil dip stick as well? You should ask the guys on the VolvoSpeed Facebook page or Matthew's Volvo site.

@@RobertDIY Thank you so much for the reply. I think it has an abnormally high amount of vacuum because it is hard to get the oil filler cap off while the engine is running, then there is a short whoosh of air when the cap is loosened.. For my non turbo I cleaned out the hoses and separator outside of the car before it clogged just as a preventative measure so I wouldn’t have to worry about finding a replacement and it seems fine. I would say it was maybe 40% clogged but all the hoses and plastic felt strong and fresh still. I took it all apart and used seafoam and gunk foamy engine cleaner to get all of the carbon out of the system so Is it risky to clean it every so many years as a preventative measure so I won’t have the struggle of trying to find a new system? I change my oil pretty frequent because I do drive aggressively and use good quality oil and Mann filters.

I'm about to do it and I can't find any information on someone else who's done it. The reason is that the mechanics in my area do not acknowledge that kind of maintenance. Hi Robert. Can a clogged system lead to low oil pressure?
@RobertDIY4 жыл бұрын
no
@rex_s804 жыл бұрын
Technically it can indirectly lead to oil problems like if it causes pressure and blows a seal for the cams or something and then you’ll start to have oil pressure problems especially when you have it pour out of the engine. But the pcv being clogged won’t immediately cause low pressure. If you have low pressure check for bubbles in the oil. If it has a lot of bubbles then you possible have failed o-rings in the oil pan causing air to get into the system. Now you can have poor oil maintenance causing the pcv to clog like Robert said in the video and it being clogged can cause the oil pressure problem as well. The pcv being clogged and low oil pressure can have the same cause. If you have low pressure then immediately test the sensor and also check the oil gallery for oil condition. You’ll want to run the engine for a few short oil change intervals to clean out the block (I had a clogged engine in the past causing oil pressure problems) and I also used seafoam when cleaning it out.
@RobertDIY4 жыл бұрын
Again, no it will NOT cause low oil pressure. It causes high crank case pressure but not low oil pressure. Low oil pressure will cause engine damage pretty quick.
