Most the fun of a reaction video is the actual reaction as it happens. Your videos are different in the way that I love how you break down your beliefs and viewpoints of the subject when the reaction is finished. I am a Lutheran pastor. I use songs like this in confirmation. You should do a review of "I Am" or "Nailed" by Theocracy. At the time that this came out the lyrics would have likely been heard as pointing at the Jimmy Swaggarts and Jim Bakkers and Paul and Jan Crouch. Nowadays it would point to Creflo Dollar, Benny Hinn, Paula White, Joyce Myers and even Jim Baker is back at it again.

I don’t know if your statement is quite fair. “most religious people don’t understand...” I think that’s a broad generalization, the very kind of thing metal fans generally buck against. I got into metal back in the late 80’s and I am now a Christian minister. There are Christians who want nothing to do with metal, sure, but there are many who once were or still are into metal, and “get it.” I still go to concerts and even today I’m wearing my Cliff Burton Day t-shirt. Just be careful how you characterize others in generality. The same thing is sometimes done by others toward the metal community, and that’s not fair either. Both communities often cross spaces and ideals, and can agree on much and learn from one another.

as an atheist, I respect religious people who have a critical mind. I often talk to catholic priests, and I like how most of them are humble and not judgemental. I’ve learned to make a difference between religious people and crooks like K Copeland. Some priests are trying to give hope to people, they genuinely want to make the world a better place, some others just want to take advantage of gullible and disoriented people for their personal profit. This is just the story of humanity as a whole, when you think about it.

I had always heard that part of the inspiration for this song and others like "The God That Failed" could also come from the death of James Hetfield's mother. She died of untreated cancer because her Christian Scientist beliefs went against the methods of treatment that would save her. It's been mentioned in interviews but I don't know if James or anyone else in the band made a direct reference to this being an inspiration.

That’s like blaming the drug dealer and not the drug user LOL without the drug user you don’t have the drug dealer. I like how you guys apportion blame to the supplier but not the demander .. as if human beings have a spell put over them which otherwise they would have been completely rational if not for these magicians. This song is a criticism specifically aimed at televangelists but the principle should be extended to all forms of faith.

Stefan Burns you repeated your first point twice 😂 well I somewhat disagree. Manipulative televangelists / pastors prying on vulnerable people is just wrong and you can’t include their victims entirely in the blame. That’s like saying that people owning things is supplying the theft crimes. I do agree that people falling for this stuff is ridiculous and hard to understand but these types of conmen are very manipulative and it’s very easy to judge as an atheist (which I am as well).

This is exactly how I interpreted this song as a teenager. Growing up in the 80s was to witness the world of televangelism in its prime. This song is about the Jim Baker's, the Jimmy Swaggerts, the Peter Popoffs etc....etc...that made their profits off the working class using satellite TV in a new world of being able to give a Visa or MasterCard number to some disconnected remote operator in order to do God's work, save the hungery children or spread the gospel with promises it would enrich your own life and put you in favor when your own judgement day would come . Many of these charlatans were eventually exposed sleeping with their secretaries or even prostitutes. Some even spending time in prison. There's a long history here, if it was before your time just do a little searching online. There is a reason this type of music and lyrical content touched and reached the lives of the youth of its generation. The irony of it all are how Metallica and other lyrically prophetic bands of this era were considered tools of devil and even "satanic". When in fact they were often thought provoking mediums to open the eyes and minds of a new generation.

Stayed the whole video, and really enjoyed it. I starve for good intellectual conversation. Though I am not religious I do study theology and respect your beliefs and really enjoy hearing your perspective. I really like how you separated televangelists from Christianity here and made it clear it’s not your practice. As someone who was not brought up with much religion in my life the televangelists out there today have really made me skeptical of religion in general. I’m glad you are truly devoted and have a ton of respect for you guys. I practice Buddhism but wouldn’t really even consider that a religion. More of a frame of mind. In my studies I have definitely found a common thread that weaves itself through all of the worlds religions. I personally think the truth is somewhere along that thread. Well done guys! I'm a new fan and I really enjoy how open y'all are about the lyrics. Double stoked you picked up on the televangelist layden content. Metal music specifically uses a lot of symbolism. I personally am not a believer of god and the (written) story of Jesus. I believe the power of ones self/mind is the ultimate tool for greatness. I also believe the bible was written to help give morals to people who would otherwise not have endured/had the chance to draw an own conclusion. Good vibes and Metal "Chugs" to you and your loved ones!!!

The beginning of Metallica has all the references of the late 70’s and early 80’s Classic Christian protocol that was shoved down our throats. The bands of that time: Known as the big 8 Metallica: Heavy Old Testament lyrics in the first albums including crosses on the cover of Master is Puppets Exodus: Old Testament name of the band Testament Again biblical reference Slayer: First album sets the stage with pentagrams on the cover Megadeth Dave Mustaine famously writes The Conjuring. Anthrax : Scott Ian only founding member and always have the pentagram on stage with them Overkill Review Deny the Cross to give you perspective Death Angel:: The name says it all All these bands are tied together and friends. They all came out at the same time and still tour together today All have various members that had heavy Negative Christian influences in their early years Almost all have band members that are now born again Christians Pastor Rob: you need to watch the interview with the drummer from Death Angel it is about his battle with Covid 19. “religion”, a set of dogmatic beliefs and practises that are to help a person achieve a spiritual goal. Religion is about believing and doing the right thing in order to be “right” with the spiritual world or a spiritual being, but the bible says there is NOTHING man can do to be in right standing with God. It says even our good deeds are but filthy rags before the holiness of God. So Christianity is different from all other religions, Christianity is based on what has already been done by God on my behalf, not what I can on His. Nothing you or I can do could ever make us more acceptable to God than we already are if we've put our trust in Jesus Christ.
