fatherof_thepack MeansTeam exactly. Floyd who's is considered a defensive master actually borrowed a lot of stuff from Duran, and that's ok. Duran borrows his shifting from earlier fighters. Notice that Duran will throw punches but many times won't bring his gloves back to his guard like the traditional coached way. Rather he will throw them hook his arm or arms around the opponent while still using one hand or the other to keep landing, since he's ina "safe" positing there(body lock)

@@michaeldemos6816 Benn was a good exciting fighter, Duran was exceptional, a lot of the boxers back then owe him a debt of gratitude for continuing to fight well past his prime, but still able to draw a crowd and a chance of a big pay day by fighting him . The fight with Davey More( should have been stopped), More was as brave as they come, and Iran Barkley (Brutal) Barkley previously had distroyed Tommy Hearns who had himself previously knocked out Duran, the two blights " No Mas" was in my opinion a guy frustrated at a guy (Leonard ) not being macho enough to fight him toe to toe, and the second the knock out by Tommy Hearns(was down to catching Roberto cold and Duran being in his partying mode before the fight). For Duran to come back after being taken the distance by Jimmy Batten and then beaten by Kirkland Laing shows a fighter not knowing when to say "No Mas" and he never hid from anyone.

@@andylea2377 Which Duran? The Duran who pushed Hagler would have beaten Benn, IMO. Focussed Duran was one of the greatest fighters to ever grace the ring, and was a handful for even the very best 25lbs above his natural weight. Benn's raw power would not be enough to get the job done. Hearns managed it against a lazy and unfocussed Duran, but nobody else ever did. Benn improved greatly after the point of this spar, and Duran of course was on the wain. Going into 1989, if we had seen Duran vs. Benn instead of Duran - Barkley and Benn - Watson, Duran would have knocked Benn out. Nigel hadn't learned to pace himself properly and was less defensive minded at this stage. He would expend most of his energy early against the slick and sturdy Duran, and Roberto would start to counterpunch him to death and methodically wear him down before pressing for a stoppage.
@MRBp20247 жыл бұрын
Is that why Benn KO Iran Barkley in 1 round and Tommy Hearn was KO by him and Duran won a Split decision. After Benn KO Barkley he beat Hearns again and went on to win 4 world titles. Nigel Benn KO the beast that was Gerald McClellan and he battered Chris Eubanks. Nigel benn will never get the respect even though he beat a hall of famer in McClellan as a world champion who was an underdog in his home country. People said he wouldn't last a round. He beat and Iran Barkley who pulled off the upset of all upsets by KO hearns and arguably beating Duran in his next fight. (He fought Hearns, Duran and Benn one after another). Benn easily destroyed him 1 minute

When Sugar Ray Leonard admits - and the interview footage is on KZbin - that the only way he (SRL) could beat Duran, was to make sure Duran wasn't fit, you know Duran was something special... And since seeing that footage, I've got a lot more respect for Ray, before he always struck me as pretty arrogant... Love how people call Duran a quitter - talking about their second bout - Yet, when fit, he beat Leonard, and Leonard knows and knew it... And Duran never ducked a fit Hagler, only Ray did that... Duran was a cunning fighter, Leonard was a cunning businessman, making sure he didn't lose another big fight, after having his ego-bashed when Duran beat him, hence Ray ducking Hagler, when Hagler offered it to him...Ray only gave Marvin the fight, when he knew that he had a big big chance of beating Marvin... Benn never ducked anyone, no wonder he and Duran got on so well.

onepinkrose x What fantastic words and how so very true. One thing worth mentioning though is that in the SRL-Duran first fight, SRL simply refused to box Duran as he wanted to beat him at his own style and out slug him. Full credit to SRL for taking it to Duran, but he was simply out fought by one of the toughest lightweight fighters of all time. In the second fight, Duran did his usual fight preparation and didn't bother training whilst SRL put his amazing boxing skills to good use and totally demoralised Duran, whom couldn't be bothered chasing someone he couldn't hit. Both are legends, together with Hagler and Hearns, it's just a pity that the average or modern day fan only saw Duran as a middleweight when unfortunately, his best days were behind him.

Well said , at times you could see Duran knowing what shot Benn would throw before Benn even knew , it would not have gone the distance for sure

That footwork is beautiful

Yeah, it's mesmerizing in a completely unexpected way; his feet are always perfectly spaced, but he's moving and shifting fast in every direction without seeming to do much and, like his feet, he keeps his upper body constantly poised for slipping and punching. Like many people I always liked Duran for his ferocious fighting spirit, but I'm beginning to see what a complete master of the art of boxing he was.

Vot63 Totally agree... Duran was a complete master of slipping punches. Could often look as though Duran was taking far more punches than he was actually taking... He made the difficult parts of boxing look effortless. Easier to throw punches than it is to get out the way of them... Reminds me of what James Toney said... 'Anyone can be a bag-beater, bags don't hit ya back...'

Benn and Duran great fighters but Mr Duran was just a master of his craft. One of the greats of all time. I think he would have take Chavez out as he did Pipino Cuevas. People forget that when Duran faced Carlos Palomino when he went up to Welter weight Palomino was a very good Champ.

Often when you watch old legends spar with current good fighters the old guys are playing around not putting much into their shots while the young guy is out there fighting hard. This is no exception.
