No doubt Leonard is one of the best ever. He is definitely the best p4p in the modern era, since home video became available to the common man worldwide, around 1980. That fact alone also makes his a credible argument for being the best p4p outa all eras, seeing as even amateurs had tape of each other since then, something Sugar Ray Robinson or Ali didnt have to contend with, not that they couldnt contend with it, its just that Leonard proved in his amateur & pro career that he was on their level but they never had to deal with fighters who had tape on them the way Leonard did.

@@queball685light sparring does not mean not hitting hard lol. There is different between someone hitting hard to work and to knock you out. Mile tyson in sparring and real fight is different but he goes hard in both. He just tries to work is combination and reflexes than to win. If the guy goes down than too bad. Sugar could have been way more agressive than that if it was about to win but is an sparring. For him its light weight maybe not for you.

It’s a Scary thought; but I would go so far as to say the 79:80 version of Ray who fought Benitez and Duran is the best version of Leonard. SRL did it all and showed in the Duran fight that he too was a creature. Ray basically and methodically walked down Wilfredo Benitez, one of the greatest WW and Defensive technicians and youngest Champions the Sport had ever seen up to that point. No telling what we would have seen out Ray - the layoff. Ray would have beaten Hagler much easier if Ray had not retired IMO. Ppl forget he moved up and won the LHW title as well. Halger never dared move up to challenge anyone one at LHW (not a knock on Marvin, just a testament to the Greatness of SRL)

@johnniea468410 ай бұрын
@@slicksouthpaw Have to disagree with you. I think Leonard was still peaking when he retired due to the retina injury in 1982. His win over Hearns, who was a killer at 147 was an all-time best performance from him. He was 25, had all his immense physical talent and had gained great top-class experience in fighting Hearns, Duran and Benitez. If he doesn't get injured it's likely he would have fought Hagler in 1983, when Marvin was also at his best. I think it's a great fight, but I don't see Leonard winning at that stage. When they eventually fought, in 1987, both were past their best, but Hagler's loss of speed hurt him badly. In 1983 he'd have had the quickness and intensity to pin Leonard down.

While stationed at Nellis AFB during the 80's I dragged a few friends to go watch Roberto Duran have an open sparring event before this fight. The place was packed, must have had 5000 people . The sparring partners were fast and moved plenty and Roberto kicked the crap out of both of them. The crowd went nuts. The climate in the city was pulling for Roberto Duran no doubt. Great part of history in boxing to say I was there,,,,,,,again. Also I believe that Engles Pedrosa might be the same guy who kicked Meldrick Taylors head in after the Chavez fight. He was tall and long reaching guy like Hearns was.
