Duran was my idol ever since I was 13 when I saw him ko Esteban in Jan, 1978. I met Roberto, too, a a little over a year after this bout. Real cool guy, very nice to me and very nice and appreciative of all his fans there, including me; he was great to me, such a good guy to me and other fans.

@@djhardcorproductions6132 I have been a Duran fan since I was 13 in 1978. Saw him beat Dejesus live with Ryan and Clancy and Dundee doing call on CBS to unify title. Met him twice. Very cool guy, talks with fans, poses for pictures, gives autographs, jokes with fans, etc. Met him at Victors Cafe in NYC and met him when he was training, also. He is better than, Cuevas, Leonard, Hearns, Benitez and Hagler P4P. / However, Cuevas is a great boxer. Hall of famer; Canastota, NY Only elite fighters make it to that hall of fame. He had 11 successful defenses. Beat Angel Espada, Harold Weston, Clyde Gray, Randy Shields, etc. They were top boxers in the mid to late 1970s. He broke eye sockets and cheek bones and jaws with that left hook.

Cuevas beat some notable fighters - he always fought the best available competition - in fact I remember Angelo Dundee saying he'd rather Leonard challenge Benitez instead of Cuevas - he was obviously concerned Cuevas might derail Leonard's career before it got started. Cuevas seems to be best remembered for the Thomas Hearns fight, but Cuevas was an accomplished champion as well...

He earned the respect and admiration of a lot of people that watch Pipino Cuevas fight. My sister’s first boyfriend who taught me a lot about Basketball once told me that Pipino Cuevas had a “sledge hammer” for a punch. Pipino Cueva’s trainer and manager Lupe Sanchez once said that he never has to worry about Pipino Cuevas whether he was in the gym training or not because he knew the time and day were Pipino Cuevas was at the gym training, it was more than establish by the fighter. Pipino’s devotion and dedication to boxing 🥊 was remarkable.

Me too...the original broadcast and not the "Superbouts" on ESPN version that had Al Bernstein doing the fight call from in a studio watching a replay. The only problem with the original broadcast is my intolerance for Ferdie Pacheco. Tongue tied, halting and trying to make every comment quotable. I often wondered what the hell he was saying. Doing the Showtime broadcast of the first Tyson Holyfield fight with Holyfield about to stop Tyson, Pacheco said "...he's going to bring...a...whole phalanx of...cardiacs..." WTF did you say Ferdie? I wish I could find an alternative and original broadcast of Duran-Leonard I. Ferdie ruins that delayed and recorded call as well.

Cuevas could rule only up till faster boxers started to turn up. Before Hearns, Leonard, Duran and the like, the powerful, jaw-breaking but slow punches could deal a blow. But none of the faster and more intelligent boxers was slow enough to get hit by Pipino's slow hammerings. Cuevas is an excellent lesson that if you have to choose just one between power and speed(reflexes), you ought to choose the speed.

Pepino was mostly a headhunter , big puncher but not a great technical fighter if you could withstand the power you had a chance. Duran one of the greatest ever , with his head movement rolling with punches he seldom got caught solid. His boxing ability has always been greatly underestimated. He would KO great young Champ Davy Moore after this and take his Championship from him. Duran was supposedly " washed up" according to the experts around this time. Two great fighters but one , Duran a true legend.

Debio despert ar una gran expectación la realización de esta pelea, pues fue de PODER a PODER. Ambos eran poseedores de una gran fuerza en sus manos, marros o martillos. A cuántos noqueó Pipino en los primeros Rounds antes de esa pelea? La misma cuestión pero con Manos de Piedra?? Pero Pipino tuvo la mala suerte de ser tocado por Durán y eso lo acabó, quizás pudo suceder lo mismo al Manos de piedra, pero el fue quien pegó primero. Se ve que Pipino sí lo pudo conectar varias veces, pero pareciera que no solo eran de piedra las manos de duran, también su quijada y torax, por eso pipino ni lo despeinó.
