Tremendous hooks to the body made him weak. Kenty quit because he knew he was getting knocked out in the third. Roberto fought the best in his era, Arguello, Rosario. Had he fought Art Frias or Sean Ogrady or even mancini he would have been world champion easily. Thanks for all the great fights Roberto.

Agree with that analysis. Hilmer’s skinny frame just didn’t stand up at all to Elizondo’s body punches. If Hilmer hadn’t called a halt, Elizondo would have halted things himself in the 3rd or 4th.

@Kedbuka Amen. It was tough being a lightweight during Arguello's era. I watched Elizondo's last fight in my hometown of Corpus Christi and he fought a guy by the name John Senegal. I was in the nosebleed seats when Elizondo landed the liver shot in the 2nd that ended it. Sounded like a shotgun. If you ever get a chance, watch his fight vs Cornelius Boza-Edwards. Epic 10rd war between two warriors.

I grew up down the street from Elizondo.

@Kedbuka Elizondo had a wicked unibrow along with a wicked left hook to the body. That was his bread and butter punch, which contributed to the stoppage. People didn't give Roberto the respect that he deserved for this victory.

I liked Elizando too. I think getting knocked out by Rosario in 1 probably make people think less of him. But, he was a tough bastard

At one time the lightweight division was loaded, seriously loaded, with very good fighters. If a fighter wanted to be a top contender he had to earn it. One of the reasons Pryor moved up to JW was the amount of time it would've taken to get title shot at LW.

@jperez9805 I liked Elizondo. I remember watching his fight w/Arguello, who was just too good and powerful for him at that point. Roberto was a very fine fighter though. And yeah, he had (A) a wicked unibrow; and (B) a wicked left to the liver.

I thought Kenty would hold the title for a while. He was a very fine fighter and brought lots of class into the ring. Surprising turn of events here. Very strange. Elizondo had a wicked unibrow.

@jperez9805 There was a brief clip of the Boza-Edwards vs. Elizondo bout before this fight. I'd forgotten all about it. It looked to be a terrific fight and I'd love to see it. Hopefully someone will post it here on YT. P.S. Was Boza-Edwards ever in a bad fight?

Kenty was a very skilled fighter but it seemed that after he lost his title to Sean O'Grady his desire seemed to be in question

I don't think either fighter was the same after their 15 round war. I'm also convinced the Kronk gym wars took their toll on many fighters, shortened their careers.

Did Kenty ever fight again?

Yes.7 more fights then he just fell off the face of the earth.

Anyone know what the results were of the investigation? Did Kenty get paid?

Actually, I have the full fight. I'll get help from my teenager in order to load it. I'll give you a heads up once I do. Boza-Edwards in a bad fight? You already know the answer to that one. How about his wars with Chacon?

Someone had to tell Elizondo to remove the unibrow

I remember this fight, at the time I was trying to understand what was going on with kenty. probably was with the weight.
@darylwoodard10546 жыл бұрын
Richard Lazenby That's probably the most reasonable explanation. Hilmer should have won this fight. Nothing against Roberto, but Kenty better fighter.
@jperez98055 жыл бұрын
I don't think weight was the issue. Hilmer was fighting a pound over his usual 135 limit. Roberto deserves a lot more credit than that. He was known for the left hook to the body. Knocked out a lot of his opponents because of it. He fought a guy by the name John Senegal back home in Corpus Christi, I was sitting in the nosebleed seats at the Memorial Coliseum when Roberto landed the hook to the liver. It sounded like someone swung a baseball bat to a water bed. Hilmer simply got drained from the hooks to the body. No shame in losing to a vicious body puncher.

I think those Elizondo hooks to the body reminded Kenty of his fight with Sean O’Grady and he wasn’t up for that kind of fight, so he bailed.
