Hey everyone! So the first thing I’m doing today is sorting out my eyebrows! This video is no shade to Huda or her skills or business. Baking clearly isn’t for everyone and works for others... it’s clearly not for me! Do you bake??? Also, it may be my British sense of humour, but when I say “very unprofessional” I’m not genuinely trying to insult Huda.. I’m just joking 😝

Honestly I used to... but my skin has changed a lot and I’ve had a bad skin reaction to something lately... so my skin is to dry for baking all I do now is a very light dab of powder right under my eyes and that’s it. I push it into the skin but that is it I don’t let it sit or nothing

RIGHT?! “Contouring” was taught to me in high school under the term “stage makeup” and the only purpose was so people in the audience could see the outline of our faces under the bright lights.
@Nadia-se2ev3 жыл бұрын
Actually makeup was born for theatrical purposes, for common people it wasn't acceptable to use makeup until 1900-1920 thanks to silent movies and had its full blow duringthe 50s, before that you were as bad if you wore makeup (not that people didn't, they were just more attentive while purchasing it and wearing it), so it's only normal that this mess happened.
@definitelynotalizard3 жыл бұрын
@@Nadia-se2ev You probably need to specify that a lot of modern makeup products (like formulated foundations) came from theatre and film. The 1800s had an anti-makeup attitude because there was a push for looking natural coinciding with moral purity. Before then, since ancient civilisations makeup was worn by many nobles and upper class men and women to show their status and keep up with the trends from royals. While it was still used by actors, it was definitely a regular part of daily life for anyone above working class or who could afford it.
@jake-amirblumenfeldwitz60683 жыл бұрын
@@Kahliecreates alright but contouring looks good in normal lighting if you do it well haha. was a revolution for me, i always hated the way i looked with makeup but when contour became a thing i realised that i didnt look right in makeup cos it took away all my shadows from my cheekbones and jaw, so contour makes me look like myself just with clear and evenly toned skin haha yay for contour XD

The thing I don't trust about online personalities like Huda Kattan is that they're all very.... dogmatic, i.e. "you need to buy this," "you have to use this product," "f you don't have this product you will get terrible results" because the only universal truth in beauty is that nothing is guaranteed to work for everyone. When somebody pushes a product or technique super hard without so much as a caveat like "this might not work perfectly for you depending on your skin type" then you know they're either not knowledgeable or just dishonest.
@Ashethetics4 жыл бұрын
Like Robert said, she seems to be a businesswoman first and foremost. She wants to sell product, and as much as possible. It’s within her interest to convince you that you need like five for her things on your face to start with. Personally; someone with that attitude towards business is not someone I would buy from at all, because I find that way of doing business (any kind) of being extremely disingenuous and scammy, in the same way people try to push MLMs like Younique or Herbalife. Like you don’t just need the weight loss tea, you can’t have the tea without the bars and the shakes and the supplements, and....
@kristinbagani28114 жыл бұрын
It’s pretty clear that her video was more about selling her products, than about actual baking. If this was purely about baking techniques, she could’ve used a different brand’s product and have gotten the same result. But she chose to push her product instead. This tells me that she’s doing this, not to make a tutorial, but to sell a product. And in my opinion, baking (outside of staging/drag purposes) is just an excuse to buy and use excessive amounts of setting powder, only to buy more again within a short period of time. And I’ve seen the prices on Huda’s products. They are definitely not cheap!!

I bought so many products not understanding why my undereye wasn’t as smooth and with zero darkness as my fav beauty youtubers.. Well when she did her check in i understood that it was all a trick of lighting, she still had darkness and a little texture and most of all you could see the product build up on her undereyes. In my 1970’s Theatrical Makeup book there is some “baking” techniques which is obviously intended for theatrical productions under specific lighting and using very specialized makeup intended for the stage. I think a light handed dusting of powders to set makeup has never given me a cake-like appearance, but baking has always done very little for me. I only use “baking” techniques on stage makeup because it does help the product stay in place and I even use eyeshadows to further blend the paint I’ve done. This whole baking thing, of course - also has origins in Drag/Ballroom Culture and the popularization of drag because of RPDR. And, as you know, there is a reason why Drag Queens often make jokes about how terrible their makeup looks in daylight... is because, it can tend to look pretty harsh outside of club lighting. Also, also, everyone knows that theatre lighting, dancing and everything that is involved in putting on a show - so, the powder helps prevent sweat from melting theatrical makeup. My point is - light “baking” isn’t terrible, terrible but for the most part - it is a technique that is more suited for cameras, lighting and the stage. Seeing young girls coming into the cosmetic department with blocky eyebrows or harsh contouring or using Instagram techniques really is... it isn’t it, sis, and I am a big appreciator of the avant-garde and weird makeup designs. I am also a fan of natural, clean base makeup then fun eyeshadow looks...
@4everGirlStar5 жыл бұрын
THIS!! Besides, theatre makeup is completely different from your normal everyday foundation😂 obviously, it needs to be set with tons of powder! Same goes for drag makeup! I love drag queens and their form of art, but objectively, their skin barely ever looks good in broad daylight! But it’s also not what it was intended for! Besides, this video specifically was obviously a promotion video for her own product! I mean come on, who BAKES THEIR BROWS??😂
@mxmuxmusik85185 жыл бұрын
They used to tell women to Bake in the 40s/50s but that was because the base makeup was full of actual grease amd adding tons of powder was the only way to keep it in place. It's a technique that survived in theatre,film, and tv because it has a nice effect on camera and at a distance.
@deathbeforedecaf77555 жыл бұрын
Makes sense baking only works for you in a theatrical sense. It's a technique people started doing after they saw drag queens do it. They do it bc they need makeup to last and under stage lights. It's not meant for day time and the average person

I didn't see her whole video, but if she is saying EVERYBODY needs to bake, she's a bad MUA. Anything dry like matte concealer/foundation or powder looks absolutely dreadful on my mature skin. For me 'dewy' (or greasy, as Huda would put it) is the only thing that looks normal. When I *want* people to think I'm pathetically vain, to look at my wrinkles, to stare at all the makeup settled and 'baked' into my nooks and crannies, I'll listen to her. But *reputable* MUAs say not to bake on older skin, not for daily wear. (Hey Wayne Goss!) And Robert showed why (even though his fine lines weren't nearly as bad as he thought). Of course, the reason she's pushing baking on everybody is because she's pushing product. She's not going to sell as many units if she says "*some* people should bake their makeup and others should avoid doing it". It would make her more trustworthy if she was honest about it instead though.

I have dry skin and it's the same for me. I have to use a hydrating primer, a more moisturising foundation and concealer especially in winter. And of course I have to prep my skin really well. This way I can use a little bit of setting powder to help my makeup to wear longer and not transfer and with a good setting spray it still doesn't look cakey but baking? Never.
