You really do know how to put a knife under stress. Excellent video, once again. Kind of strengthens my decision to go for the F1x. I know Fallknivens are pricey but seem to be very well balanced regarding blade material/geometry, heat treatment, etc. This will be my first serious bushcraft knife and hope it's the right choice. I know there are a ton of other options out there but the F1x seems to best fit my selection criteria. Thanks again for another amazing video. All the best :)

Got one coming from Heinnie this week, I now have the F1X, S1X and now the A1X, that's in addition to my original F1 and A2. I suspect the A1X will supersede the A2 actually, it's shorter but much thicker and the Cos steel is impressive, so it will chop as least as well as the A2 in a shorter package, I hope! Will get a custom leather sheath for it too, I like the plastic ones but you can't beat leather for me. Keep up the good work Rob, I listen to you when it comes to kit, especially knives.

That's a broad subject Michael. Time of year and weather play the biggest part. Staying dry is really important and a good night's sleep is the most important thing for your mental state and you will not perform well without sleep. I'm not a fan of bivi bags , I like a hammock, research shelter options and sleep out in the garden if you can, buy the best kit you can afford but remember that you can get away with Walmart and DIY store gear, no need to buy expensive cutting tools either, Mora make great knives, alcohol stoves are small, lighting and have no working parts to break down, get advice on footwear, you probably won't need big leather mountaineering boots which can be uncomfortable, hard to dry and heavy. Three reliable forms of firelighing, not gadgets, I've proven that in various videos! Buy a sleeping bag with a higher rating than you need and the thickest inflatable hiking mattress you can carry. Ok?

Hello again, looks like we are neck in neck on Falkniven X knives. I also purchased the A1X after owning the S1Xb. I had reached out to Falkniven early on in my “X journey” inquiring as to whether they planned on releasing handles in various materials that could be swapped out for the thermorin ones. I thought given the ease of changing scales on these knives it would be a way to dress up the knife comparing it to how most of us guys keep the same suit but but ties to accentuate the suit based on the occasion. At present this is still not on their agenda. As it turned out, my thermorin scale on my S1Xb tore where the screws fastened the scales to the handle this obviously the thinnest area for already soft thermorin material. I will say in all fairness that Falkniven rapidly responded to my email with attached picture of the damaged scale within the day I forwarded the email as well as mailing me replacement scales free of charge including shipping to my home in the continental US. I’m wondering if this has happened to anyone else who owns one of these knives. I am also hoping SOME dealer jumps on the seemingly marketable offering of various handle scales for these knives which would allay what occurred with me ( and I was not roughly testing the knife; very standard “proper “ treatment of the blade on my part) as well as a solution should different uses be desired including just plain ol pretty materials if you want to take it to church with you in your Sunday best...
@RobEvansWoodsman3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the update Christopher, my S1Xb is so much better with the new scales, I'm almost happy with the handle on the A1x if they do break I'll make new scales. Good to know that Fallkniven treated you well, I'd heard bad things about their after sales service.

The A1X would be my knife of choice with a folder of a necker, the S1X with a large axe. The coating works well but if I bought the knife again I wouldn't bother, at some point it'll need sharpening and that'll take some coating off.

I have an F1X and an S1X, the handles do mellow in time, bit less rough after some use and there're both my go to knives now along with an A2. I do want the A1X too though of course! Have been running an A1 for ~8 years now, and it it has treated me well. I must say im really not a huge fan of the VG10, edge holding is mediocre, and i get chips pretty consistently, which is just something i dont want to have to deal with. Had been thinking a Pro or an X might be a worthwhile replacement. Would you lean one way or the other of on the two?(looking at 275usd for the X, 400 for the Pro). Not sure im really seeing the worth of a nearly 50% price increase for the Pro, even if it is tempting. Did grab a Skrama 200 to see if it might fit the role i use the A1 for(batoning / delimbing/ light chopping), as i always have a gunny hunter with me as well for the finer stuff. @@RobEvansWoodsman BRK have too many quality control issues, but they have such a big cult following that will attack anyone trying to criticize the knives. I currently own the original Bark River Buschrafter in 3V. I also own the F1x and the S1x from Fällkniven. In my opinion Fällkniven does a better job. The quality is more consistent and the grinds are done better. One thing I don’t like with Fällkniven is the bad warranty. Hi there. No I have had a number of email conversations with Peter himself who initially responded to my concern the same day. Perhaps it is how people approach them; my approach has always been with true respect for their superior products; my concerns relate to design issues that can only improve an otherwise above average product. It may also have helped that my prior contacts to Peter were not asking for anything but to praise his product. I think sometimes people ( and I am guilty of this myself in some other situations) open by trashing the product like:” you think your so big and bad and charge so much but look at this shit...” While I understand this (from being in that role in other areas) especially when some boasts “the best in the world”- there is a tendency to provoke an “oh realllllly” response- they really are excellent knives. I always remember the engineering “joke” my dad once told me: when asked if “the glass is half empty or half full”, the engineers response is to modify the design of the glass, not bitch about good vs bad. Falkniven constantly tries to improve on an already great thing. “ Ah that ones reach should exceed ones grasp else what is a heaven for?” I would love to see the handles you made for your S1Xb. Did you then need to redesign the sheath or did you simply use sturdier materials like micarda?
@RobEvansWoodsman3 жыл бұрын
I used black linen micarta on red and white G10 liners (to give a nice contrast). Made a new kydex sheath for it. Fallkniven are definitely my favourite production knives, excellent quality but a little expensive for some people.
@christopherdiggles65333 жыл бұрын
Well my friend if you ever want to make another set, I would be happy to purchase one or multiple sets from you. Like I said a few “ties” to go with my suit. I figured micarda would be an excellent choice as it is a marriage or art and function. So if your interested, you have a repeat customer. My only request would be to allow them to fit the original sheath which falls into one of those engineering improvements Falkniven underwent. If you are interested I would order like 3 varied designs - there are some beautiful micarda patterns ( eg black with red grain etc). I now own 2 S1Xbs and the A1X as well. No pressure just saying you might be the guy who corners the market on “Falkniven X ties” . Let me know. You seem a down to earth humble man but WTF you love knives and are clearly talented WHY NOT YOU? Or if you even just wanted to do one set. Just sayin...

It really makes you wonder why they don’t just make a regular A-1 (not the X series) in laminated cobalt steel. The handles on the X Series all sound ROUGH. I know that a lot of us *can* take rough handles - but I’d also venture to assert that every single one of us also *REALLY prefers not to.* Cause if my axe breaks, then boom. I’m left with just my knife to process the same amount of wood with. The handles on the x series knives sound like HELL on the hand for extended periods of hard use. So it begs the question, why don’t they just make a version of the A-1 Pro (aluminum bolsters, laminated cobalt steel and everything,) but with the same distal thickness and grind/bevel height as the regular A-1? So many people want the regular A-1 in a super steel like LamCos and without the handles that MURDER our hands like in the X Series, and with the same protective aluminum bolsters and therma handles as on the Pro Series… so like… GIVE IT TO US, FALLKNIVEN.

Any reason why you didn't go for the A1xb? I am thinking of getting the F1xb as the blade is 10cm compared to 16cm on the A1 as I think its a bit big... The F1 will be my general use knife and when I get the Bushtool off you (hint hint) that will be my go to knife for fires etc...
@RobEvansWoodsman3 жыл бұрын
I didn't go for the coating because it was a pain in the arse rehandling the S1XB trying not to scratch the coating off and when it's time to sharpen the S1 properly a lot of the coating will be removed. Personally if I was to carry a 4"blade scandi knife and another I'd go for the larger option.

A1X , handle is really small on the S1PRO, I had one when they first came out, sold it within the month, it's one of them "neither here nor there" knives, too awkward for fine work, not big enough for heavy work and the handle is tiny. I'll sell you a F1 Pro if you like 😜

Hey Rob. If you had to sell one, would it be the A1X or the rehandled S1X? Cheers, Baz

The A1X only because I have an A1pro.

You able to make a set of scales for my F1X?

I cant believe how well it feathers for such a thick grind. For its size and considering its overall performance, I cant think of a better stainless steel survival type knife.

It wasn't really sharp either.

Even though it's thick stock its geometry makes it relatively easy, imo. Off the top of my head I can think of a variety of alternatives, for example there's the Terävä Skrama in 4110/12C27 (which is considerably longer in both available variants), the Linder Super Edge 3 (in ATS-34 and a little bit shorter, fun fact: Linder is the original manufacturer of the F1) and plenty of Leukus or considering the A1x's price, it's not far fetched to think of a custom knife made from AEB-L, Niolox (or similar steels) or even Nitrobe77 if the knife should be truly stainless.

The thick grind is precisely what makes the shaving curl so nicely... Really thin sharp grinds don't curl the wood so you end up with peels, not curls... Personally, I have all my knives reground to 0.020", as I don't care about curls that much, and I certainly think 20 dps apexes are absurdly dull. 10-15 dps is more like it. Convex edges do curls nicely, but cut poorly in my opinion, though V edges do have a tendency to make a slight burr when chopping. I think the softer impact of thin edges beats everything, especially with hollow ground profiles, which sink softly and thus save pain on the hand.

Do you prefer the A1 Pro or the A1X?

I think I'd prefer the X because It's more rugged.
