Nothing cuts like carbon steel,it got that special bite. Here in Norway we say a edge have bite. I have many old scandy knives from long dead famous knife makers/bladesmiths,and they all have the super hard carbon steel edge with lots of bite. They are all laminated steel as we allways has made them here since the viking era. Conserving steel and they dont break in the cold,the edges can then be made hard as nails. And axes for everything else,they are made the same way,laminated. I have many stainless knives, but i just love the carbon steel. That is also the only steel i forge. It takes lots of abuse and it bites.

@greekveteran27152 жыл бұрын
In terms of how the knife will perform in bushcraft tasks, you have the BEST knives, so no need to go to Custom level knives. Bushcraft Black is all you need, materials aside, it's probably the best Bushcraft knife out there! You'll pay for funcier knife, that will last longer, but will not work as good as the Mora. Only Robs version of Skookum probably comes close, but last time I checked, it was a 1 year wait list, so I don't and probaly never know, if it is better than the Moras ( I mean on how it performs,carves,feathers etc) Keep 'em sharp and Enjoy Arthur!
@howardvarley87952 жыл бұрын
@@greekveteran2715 Trust me Robs Bushtool is superior to the Black, It comes much sharper, stays sharp longer and is easier to keep sharp. It feather sticks much better than the Mora too. I have two Bushcraft Blacks and neither keep their edge well. Not really impressed.
@greekveteran27152 жыл бұрын
@@howardvarley8795 All true, however saying a knife doesn't come sharp, is like saying a car comes without a full gas tang with gasoline. We HAVE to sharpen and in most cases, reprofile all new knives. I bet, I coud make you change your mind a lot about Moras, and I don't mean, that their steel is as good as on a 300e custom knife... Scandi edge suffers from poor edge stability and poor edge retention. That means, that you have to both reprofile and sharpen your Moraknivs more, to make them hold their edge. You can make it hold it's edge 4 to 5 times longer, than how they would last just having honed the factory edge and put it in use.
@RobEvansWoodsman2 жыл бұрын
I'm going to butt in here gentlemen. My grind is far steeper than any mora knife, I've made it this way to last longer and resist rolling and chipping, however this comes at a price , it will not slice wood cross grain as well as a mora, it's all a trade-off. I love using a mora especially the robust, with a good sharpen and the spine ground I'd put it up against most custom scandi knives. Thanks to you both for commenting and expressing your opinions.

I'm with ya man, something is off with the 14C28N Garberg. I've had two of them and ended up getting rid of both. I felt like I couldn't get the edges right with the belly to tip. They seemed to me too round or convex in the belly . I recently purchased a Carbon after watching a video of yours and hearing you say there's a difference. I dont understand cause there is a difference, it feels slightly lighter in hand. The edge cuts different out of box with the secondary bevel. I also notice that the secondary on my carbon is really small almost just a polished micro . My two 14C28N editions had much larger secondary grinds. I remember Dave Canterbury saying that the Carbon version took longer cause they had to use a different machine to grind the Carbon steel properly. All their knives are robotic machine made edges . I think the knives look the same but there is clearly something different with the edges . Or I'm just a biased weirdo about Carbon steel that I've let it cloud my judgment 😁 I'm currently leaving the secondary on it and going to slowly let it vex the micro bevel with a loaded hard flat strop over time. The grinds are so small I hate to take steel off of them . Plus I wanna see what happens over time . Sometimes I get ro anxious with new blades and always want to put my specific grind on them all ... I will do it this time , I must stay strong LOL. You should make a video about this and see if anyone else notices a difference.

Ok, now I'm not feeling too bad about owning too many knives. I know what you mean with the stainless Garberg, the 14C28N is a really good and tough stainless steel and it does take a comparably fine edge but the C100/UHB20C that Mora uses for their carbon knives seems to cut slightly better/smoother after the initial edge polish has "worn off" (I think you know what I mean). The Garberg is the only stainless Scandi I still have and I think it's fine for wet and humid environments but I wouldn't mind to replace it someday with a Bushtool made from AEB-L or even Nitrobe 77 (made by Damasteel just like RWL34) for example.

@RobEvansWoodsman2 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming that you are referring to the tiny cutout where the grind plunge cut meets the edge, If I was making a knife with a flat grind I'd put one on it, people don't tend to do this these days, I always assumed that it's there for future sharpenings to avoid the nasty little curve that forms when you don't sharpen tight to the plunge line. I could be wrong but that seems to make sense to me. Edit; I wouldn't class myself as a professional knifemaker .

@RobEvansWoodsman2 жыл бұрын
I find 01 to be an excellent steel for a zero scandi grind, A2 and D2 are far too brittle with that fine edge.
@Bushprowler2 жыл бұрын
With acute edge angles, fine edges and a need for high fine edge stability when working with wood O1 is just excellent whereas S90V/420V for example is kinda terrible for a scandi but great if you don't need a very fine edge geometry and want to cut abrasive materials like carpet all day. 3V is fine but grossly overhyped, imo. I had some smaller knives and a large camp knife made from 3V with that proprietary Delta V heat treatment and switched back to Goloks/Parangs in 5160 with differential heat treatment shortly after, they both got dings and chips but it took so much longer to resharpen the 3V that I didn't see the point whereas in Benchmade's Puukko it's so soft that I don't see any benefits over a simple non-PM steel and don't get me started on BRKT.

In my opinion yes. The bushtool is meant for a multitude of task one of the main ones is carving, 4.5mm thick would produce a heavy knife which will cause fatigue to the user making it dangerous to use and it will not cut like a thinner blade, however it would split wood very well.

@Bushprowler2 жыл бұрын
@@oldfart9287 the spine is the way it is because the surface of their knives is decarbonized and way softer just like Mora's Triflex steel back in the day which makes the knife tougher overall, functionally it's comparable to a laminated blade and because people seem to like to scrape their firesteels with the spine they started to grind bevels onto the spine to reveal the harder inner steel and I can't say anything bad about Laurin's heat treatment on my Skrama.

It still never worked properly, so I came down to the same conclusion as you.
