Robin Cousins - 1980 European Figure Skating Championships FS

Robin's rarely seen European performance in 1980. He is interviewed afterwards by his countryman and predecessor as Olympic champion, John Curry. Not Robin's best performance of this program, but enough to secure his first major ISU title that paved the way to his Olympic Gold, just as it had for John 4 years earlier.

I so miss this style of skating. I am sick of the relentless push for everyone to do multiple quads in each performance. Robin was/is a wonderful artist - and that’s what I want to see more of.

I know it gets derided a lot, but I love Robin's disco dancing sections. Clearly this was a man who had some off-ice moves as well! Was everyone sitting on the same side as the cameras or something? The arena looks almost empty.

Thanks for post Floskate. Were the 6.0s for technical or artistic? They only showed one set of marks. Surely artistry higher. So many favourite parts. Love the final section: the sheer power speed and excitement of those cross cuts. Gorgeous. You would never see that today.

Here Robin complete good compulsory figures and was so close to Hoffmann and Kovalev. That was the reason of his overal victory.

I think that's what he meant by leeway. Perhaps those doubles out were intentional.

@@Fatima502 I am going to reveal my age for saying this, but this was an interesting competition and his win was unexpected after how the top 3 had skated through SP. So, I don’t think those popped jumps were intended. Cousins had done well in patch, placing directly behind Kovalev and Hoffmann, but he had a bad SP, in which he actually placed behind them. Since it was obvious to everyone Kovalev was WAAAAAAAY out of shape to give a decent FS, I don’t think Cousins was concerned about him. But I don’t think anybody expected Cousins to be able to take over Hoffmann’s lead, especially with Hoffmann’s strong technical content in his FS…and Hoffmann DID skate pretty well. Luckily (for Cousins), however, the judges really appreciated his artistry here compared to Hoffmann’s, and he was able to enjoy the overall win for the first time.
