Kevin Costner gets a lot of flack for this role because of his accent and such, but this is STILL my favorite Robin Hood live action movie. It's over the top, it has lots of cheese, takes itself too seriously sometimes, and yet... somehow it all works. It's a really fun and wonderful movie, even with its flaws.

Unusual one to react to, but I’m glad you have 🙂 This Alan Rickman performance usually gets overlooked when people go through his career. “I’m gonna cut your heart out with a spoon” is an amazing line. The Sean Connery cameo is there for a couple of reasons. Number 1, King Richard "The Lionheart" is quite a beloved monarch in English history, so having someone with gravitas makes sense. And 2 (and probably more appropriate), he's also played Robin Hood before, so it was a bit of a "passing the torch" moment. Great reaction fellas, one of my all time fav childhood movies.

It's also worth pointing out that the tree that Wolf climbs to escape Guisbourne's troops has now been cut down by an "unknown person(s)"- it had stood there in Sycamore Gap on Hadrian's Wall for decades until then...tragic

Came out when I was around 9 years old and singlehandedly the best Robin Hood movie ever made. This movie changed the industry forever, and made a star of both Costner and Bryan Adams with the theme. Ok, Costner gets jip for the accent, but I love him in this role. It's also a childhood memory sitting with my sister watching this on VHS. What I love is they don't shy from the nasty side of the times with pestilence and brutality, but at the same time managed to make a swashbuckler that is memorable and quotable. One of the best movies ever made, and based on what started as a handful of incomplete poems that probably never actually happened. There's also a few different versions of this film, some cut out Mortiana's relationship with Nottingham, and some don't. Edit: I think what makes the American accent work, is that they had Will Scarlett have an American accent as well.

You guys hit on something telling to the story, which I missed. The contrast between Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham was clear throughout the movie. Robin a Christian, the Sheriff an Occultist, Robin a trustworthy subject of England’s king, the Sheriff a disloyal usurper-But the one I missed which you guys highlighted, was their inverse attitudes towards family. The sherif killed his cousin, and Robin was overjoyed to find out he had a brother. That says it all.

It's a well made 90s medieval lore movie. Another one that is like this is the Three Musketeers from 1993, starring Kiefer Sutherland, Tim Curry etc. The actor(Michael Wincott) who played the Sheriff's cousin, Guy of Gisborne in this is also in that movie, where he plays the secondary villain next to Tim Curry's excellent performance of Cardinal Richelieu, Captain Rochefort. Another movie based on literature where Wincott also appear is the Count of Monte Cristo (2002). Wincott plays alot of villain roles in movies, he is also in The Crow, Along Came a Spider and Metro. He has also VA'd in video games, Halo 2 where he is the voice of the Prophet of Truth and Darksiders 2 where he voices the main character, Horseman Death.

After Diehard, this was the movie that cemented Alan Rickman as a major movie villain character. His performance as an over-the-top bad guy where he can do from being silly (cancelling Christmas) to deadly evil is classic. He's basically the male version of Malificent in the original Disney's Sleeping Beauty.
@Cau_No

I really prefer his performance of Hans Gruber (one of the most intriguing villains) much over this one. Gruber was menacing, intelligent, and for most of the time had the upper hand in te plot. The Sheriff however was a goofy, bumbling kind of comic book villain. The "And call off Christmas!" line did it for me, I couldn't take that character serious ever again. I didn't follow the Harry Potter franchise much, so my favourite parts Alan did after "Die Hard" were in "Dogma", "Galaxy Quest" and a little detective movie named "January Man" with Kevin Kline and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (who played Maid Marian in this one.)

@@wichhouse Just read the sentence after the one you quoted, there I already explained why I liked him better as a character. The Sheriff wasn't a believable threat to the hero, but Gruber was, all the time. To me they were the most convincing and you get to understand their motivations (without condoning their actions).

Some fascinating facts and trivia for you: The tree scene at the beginning is the "sycamore gap tree" in Northumberland. The wall next to the tree is Hadrian's wall (73 miles long and built in 122AD.) It's known as one of the most photographed trees in UK. The fight scene with Little John is at Aysgarth falls in Leyburn, in the Yorkshire Dales, another stunning location. Alan Rickman was given opportunities by Director Kevin Reynolds to add to the script. The infamous line "You. My room, 10.30,' you, 10.45, and bring a friend" he created by asking for input from writer Peter Barnes and comedienne Ruby Wax. He knew these lines were working when all the crew started cracking up. The witch was played by Geraldine McEwan who is such a brilliant actress, she's very famous for playing Miss Marple for several years and that character could not be more different from Mortianna. Kevin Costner only had 3 days break between finishing Dancing with Wolves and starting this movie, so we can cut him some slack for accents which were a bit dodgy all round to be honest, apart from Alan Rickman, steal scening god. Who cares about accents when a movie is this fun and good. Glad you enjoyed it.

Not to mention Bryan Adams with the second longest reigning number 1 of all time I think, only beaten by Whitney Houston, I will always love you from The Bodyguard which was another Costner movie. Edit: just taken straight from Wikipedia The song was an enormous chart success internationally, reaching the number-one position on the music charts of at least nineteen countries, notable exceptions in the Western World being Italy (number three) and Spain (number four). It is particularly notable for its success in the United Kingdom, where it spent sixteen consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart, the longest uninterrupted run ever on that chart as of 2023. It also topped the Europe-wide sales chart for eighteen continuous weeks. In the United States, it topped the Billboard Hot 100, which combines radio airplay and sales, for seven weeks, but stayed at number one for seventeen consecutive weeks on the sales-only chart.[3] It went on to sell more than 15 million copies worldwide, making it Adams's most successful song, and one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Thank you for the facts. I remembered the # 16 but for some reason I thought it was Celion Dion with Titanic that knocked him out of Guiness Book.

Sean Connery was Robin Hood in the 60s on TV. That's why the film makers brought him on to the movie in a cameo. And yes, even as an 18yo in the theaters, it was a cool mind blowing experience. 😊

As a Scot, I can confrm watching this in the cinema in Scotland when we heard that "HOLD" at the end, we all gasped knowing instantly who it was. It was a well-kept secret. I remember commenting as we left that I loved that one of the most famous English Kings turned out to be Scottish 😂

The sheriff's cousin - Guy of Gisborn is his name (13 year old me was OBSESSED with this movie) also plays the evil jail warden in The Count of Monte Christoz which I remember you guys liking a lot. Great reaction. This movie is not technically GOOD, hut it is one of the most fun movies to watch IMO.

It was a HUGE deal seeing Sean Connery in the theaters because he had previously played Robin Hood in the 70s so no one saw it coming, but loved the Easter Egg when it happened. This was before the internet and spoilers so it was a total surprise.

Right from seeing this the first time in the theater I enjoyed it mostly because of the Sheriff. Alan Rickman was just amazing in this, you just love to hate him while crying with laughter - “… call of Christmas”, “… and bring a friend”, “I cut your heart out with a spoon”, him stabbing a plate in a temper tantrum… all most memorable lines are his. Sorry Kevin but I would have liked to see more of the Sheriff than the main character.

The similarity of Robin Hood's camp and the Ewok village was not lost on the company that made the toys. I used to own the Ewok village playset when I was a kid and years later when this movie came out and the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves action figures came out my younger cousin got Robin's hideout for Christmas and when I helped him put it together I realized it was exactly the same toy as the Ewok Village, just with a slightly different color palette. I actually dug out my old Ewok village from the depths of my closet so we could play with a bigger village set.

2 titbits 1. There was a Robin Hood TV movie in the works at the same time as this one. Among other good actors they had Uma Thurman as Maid Marian. In the middle of filming they got word that Kevin Costner's Robin Hood was in the works. I've seen it and it starts out well, but at some point it looks like everyone, from the director and the actors simply gave up and only went through the motions. No TV production could live up to a major Hollywood production and with both coming out in the same year their movie was doomed. 2. This was the last really successfully Robin Hood movie. Interestingly every Robin Hood movie afterwards (not counting Men in Tights) went further and further away from the original legend and the characters became less and less recognizable. Until the one from 2018, which most people don't even remember. The historical inconsistencies were so bad that even people that usually ignore such details couldn't stand them and the characters have become unrecognizable. Or so I heard.

I was in Jr. High when this movie came out and our band at school did a rendition of the main title theme from this movie and it was one of the most enjoyable things to play. I was on the timpani (big kettle drums) and the climax of the theme had some really challenging stuff. It's a totally rousing piece and it made me happy that you guys recognized it. I feel like movie scores haven't been like this in a very long time.
